Not in My Hall

Description: Daynar catches Nyblek fighting yet again
Location: Garnet Valley Hold
Date: month 7, day 17 of Turn 3

"BLAST you, Nyblek! AGAIN!" The raised voice of the Hallmaster carried easily throughout the work room, where he stood, staring down the apprentice. "You're fighting AGAIN! In MY Hall? I ought to have you thrown out."
The gruff voice softened. He rather liked the young lad, and a part of him approved of the boy asserting his 'status'. Rather reminded him of himself, at that age, always scrapping with the other apprentices.
Boys will be boys, after all. But this was setting a bad example!
People were starting to talk!

Nyblek looked down at the work table, a look of shame on his bruised face. He had made the Hallmaster angry at him, _again_. "Favian was picking on the apprentices, sir. He's much bigger than they are."

Daynar frowned at this bit of information, and reminding himself that Favian needed just as stern a talking to as Nyblek. The yelling done, for the moment, Daynar considered the apprentice. "Did you at least get him a good punch, lad? I'll take care of Favian myself. He's dragging the lot of you with him!" Shaking his head, he went on. "Still, you ought to fetch a teacher, not handle it yourself. I've told you and told you that, Nyblek. We can't punish him as thoroughly if I don't catch him in the act!"

"And be labled a spineless snitch, sir? The big boys would wallop me for sure. Telling the teacher is for the little ones who can't fight for themselves." The apprentice looked at the Hallmaster out of the corner of his eye, hoping he hadn't made him even angrier. But it was the truth after all.

Daynar frowned at the young apprentice. "A spineless snitch or a distruptive student that fights. I'm pleased you want to stand up for others, Nyblek, but I can't have fights going on all the time under my nose. We are Smithcrafters, and Pern must see we are not just bullies with metal toys." He paused, considering. He didn't want spineless apprentices, either, just ones that didn't wrestle at every opportunity.
"I will speak to Flavian. You get back to your studies, and impress me." "Am I going to be punished, sir?" Nyblek asked guiltily. The fact that he would have a punishment to endure didn't bother the boy, but disappointing the Hallmaster cut deeper than any consequence would.

"I can think of nothing suitable at the moment, and you had good intentions. But I trust I will see better behavior from you in the future?" Daynar said, more quietly, and with a definite note of disapproval in his tone. Nyblek was one of his favorites, though he loved all the boys that studied in his Hall. "I will try my best, sir. I don't like to fight, I swear I don't." Nyblek was determined to try not to fight in the future. The Hallmaster had been so patient with him, and always kind. He would try for Master Daynar.

A nod, and one large hand rested on the boy's shoulder for a moment.
"That will do for now. We'll speak of this again, but for the moment, attend to your studies." Such a different face he showed his 'boys' while trying to turn them all into little copies of himself.
