Aishara

Aishara

R'taran felt his heartbeat quicken as he saw Aishara take a seat.
After three turns, he had yet to speak with her, yet he remembered
clearly the first day he had seen her at the beasthold at Emerald
Falls all those turns ago. She was not what he had been raised to
expect of a girl, but she was exceedingly striking. Though he did not
approve of women working at traditionally male tasks, something about
her graceful movements and genuine kindness as she interacted with the
animals and the people around her had captured his attention that day.
Surreptitiously, he had observed her and wondered at her perpetual
good cheer despite her father's rather gruff countenance. R'taran
remembered lingering close to the beasthold, to get a glimpse of the
girl or hear her merry laugh.

}:You should speak to her:{ Qharterioth encouraged. }:She and
Ayumith flew well today and were unscathed:{

The brownrider curbed a smile at his dragon's attempt at manipulation.
R'taran was a martinet when it came to fighting thread and honestly
admired good and careful flying. Of course Qharterioth was always
trying to get him to socialize, in whatever way he could. Still
Aishara was every bit as striking as she had been nearly seven turns
ago, more so really and he was far from the holder boy he had been.
Seeing that she had none, he grabbed another cup of klah and
approached the green rider with untempered self assurance.

"Klah?"

"Thank you, very kind of you. It's just what I'm looking for," Aishara
replied, giving him a friendly smile, like she did to everyone. She
accepted the mug and inhaled the steam rising from it. She wasn't sure
of his name, not being same wing with him, but she had seen him around
the Weyr.

"I thought that might be the case. R'taran," he stated with a nod,
taking a seat. "Qharterioth's rider."

"I'm pleased to meet you, R'taran. I'm Aishara, green Auymith's rider.
You're in the Weyrleader's wing, aren't you?" Aishara replied.

"I am," he agreed. "And you are from Emerald Falls, a Master
Beastcrafter's daughter," the brownrider added confidently.

"You forgot "the girl who Impressed from Stands"- part," Aishara
grinned. "You have an advantage, you seem to know lot of me. You're
from Emerald Falls hold too?"

Though he wasn't one to show amusement often, he found the greenrider
somewhat infectious so he dropped his haughty facade and offered
Aishara one of his rare smiles, bringing quite a change to his rugged
features. "You're a legend in your own right," he teased. "And yes,
my father runs a mid-sized Holding close to Emerald Falls. I remember
seeing you when my father came to see yours about breeding stock."

He was quite handsome when he smiled, Aishara noticed. "Well,
considering how much time I spent just following my dad around, I was
seen by quite a lot of people. Which hold was it? I might remember
something," she asked.''

"Merry Brook," he replied. "Both Forest Spring and Green Acres have
profited from use of the lands in turns since the plague, but my
father is a distant cousin of the original bloodline there and trying
to restore its standing. Some very good herd and runner beasts as
well as farming." His young life had been dedicated to aiding his
father in restoring the Hold and his voice was tinged with some pride.

"Yes, I know the area," Aishara said. "My dad works with Luter from
Green Acres a lot. They share passion for runners and breeding them."

"I tried to convince my father to consider breeding runners more
seriously, but he always insisted the herdbeasts were more practical.
Working with the animals was more enjoyable than working the land,
though."

"Runners are more profitable but herdbeasts produce milk, meat and
hides," Aishara said. "We need both. Otherwise our dragons would
starve," she joked.

"True enough. So how have you found life at the Weyr?"

"I'm comfortable with it. It has it's risks but the rewards are worth
of it," Aishara answered.

"Life is certainly different, but there is nothing like riding a
flaming dragon," R'taran agreed taking a sip of his klah. "Your
father must have been shocked when you Impressed, your not even being
a candidate."

"A bit yes,"Aishara smiled. "But not as much as some others. He is
after all, a weyrbred, and left Weyr when he didn't Impress. I have
enough dragonrider's relatives, so it wasn't that surprising."

"Ah, if he comes from Weyrfolk that makes sense. My Search was a
surprise to my family, though I had two cousins that were Searched
just before me. Makes me wonder about my younger siblings sometimes."

"Mmh, yes, having dragonrider relatives do seem to increase the odds
of Impressing. If you get too curious, you can always ask one of the
searchriders to take a look of your siblings. Although they tend to
ignore the younger ones. Having twelve Turns old Impress is not
helping the Weyr in our current situation," Aishara replied. She found
R'taran pleasent enough to talk with.

R'taran had never even considered that and duty to the Weyr verses his
home Hold warred with one another. He was enjoying his talk with
Aishara, though, and did not want to say anything to offend her, like
he so often did with other female riders. His Holdbred values were
unpoplular to say the least. Usually he did not really care if his
words affronted others if they were honest ones, but somehow he found
that Aishara's opinion of him mattered. That was unique enough for
him to hold his tongue and consider his words more carefully. R'enh's
advice was in the forefront of his mind.

}:Yes, please don't chase this one away, too.:{ Qharterioth agreed
almost plaintively.

"There are a couple that might be of an age that would be useful to
the Weyr," he responded finally. "Though another turn or two and they
might be more so." In another two turns the oldest of his sisters
would most likely be wed. Paulton, would be seventeen turns then and
that made him wonder if his younger brother would indeed make a good
dragonrider. How would his family feel about that? R'taran drank the
last of his klah. "It has been a pleasure to finally meet you,
Aishara, but I need to let you finish your food and after flying
Thread today, I find I'm in desperate need of a bath. I hope we can
talk again sometime...soon."

"It's been a nice talking with you," Aishara said. "I'm not going
anywhere, so, feel free to look me up," she continued. "I'm off for
bath too." She was also going to check if R'ehn was...free.
