Location: Amber Hills Hold, Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 10, day 12 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: Chioneth, Teseada, Onnyth
Lema watched the young children of the Hold playing near the warm
hearth in the Main Hall; it reminded her that it hadn't been that long
ago when you would find her there among them reading or drawing. She
smiled as she worked with the other drudges; though she longed for
something more. She had ever since she had reached her 14th turn; it
confused her cause she didn't know what she longed for.
Imalkyth and Peltath burst from /between/ just short of the hold and
sent a greeting to the watch rider. K'ale told him they were there on
search and to let the appropriate people know. The big brown and much
smaller green spiraled through the clear winter air toward the main
square while the people gathered. Dismounting quickly the brownrider
approached the Assistant Steward who emerged from the entrance.
"Chioneth has a clutch on the sands so we would like to see if there
are any people interested in being searched."
Lema walked out with some warm Klah for the riders; she smiled at them
as she approached. The young children behind her; she waited till the
Assistant Steward was finished talking to the riders before bringing the
Klah to them. She didn't say anything as she stood nearby waiting for
orders. She hadn't seen a search before; though it seemed that some of
the Children were nervous.
K'ale reached for one of the cups to warm his hands while he watched
the group of people gathering. He blew into it to send warm steam into
his face and smiled at the girl who'd brought it out to them.
"Thanks," he grinned
Lema blushed and thought **no one ever thanked me before** as she held
the tray of drinks. She smiled to ease the nerves of the children;
some of them smiled back to her. She turned to Peltath's rider and
asked "Would you like some?"
"Yes thanks," he nodded and wrapped his fingers around a warm mug. His
attention was on Peltath though as the green swung her head to scan
the crowd. "That one," he pointed at a youth on the other side of the
square. He walked toward the kid and handed him a token from his
pocket. "Peltath thinks you have possibilities. Talk to your family
and be back here in a candlemark if you wish to go with us." He
turned and walked back toward where K'ale stood. He hadn't missed some
of the sullen looks on one side of the square and felt much better
next to his 'protection.'
"You're fine," K'ale said as the greenrider got back to him. "I'm
watching them, and so is Imalkyth."
Lema watched as the boy ran off to talk to his family; she sighed quietly.
She had come to live at this Hold after she woke in the ruins of a
house on the shore of the sea; but she wanted to leave the Hold
feeling as though her future wasn't there but somewhere else.
The greenrider turned slowly toward the young woman and tilted his
head. "You?" He looked back up at Peltath. "Would you want to go to
the Weyr as a candidate?"
"Me?" Lema asked startled; she had never dreamed that she would be
picked to be a rider candidate. There were gasps around the Court
Yard; and people began to talk quietly. Lema thought about it and said
"Sure though I don't have much in the way of possessions"
K'ale watched the crowd with narrowed eyes. "Not to worry, the Weyr
will provide for you if you wish to go with us."
"Yes I would like to go" Lema said with a small smile; and handed the
tray of Klah to another drudge.
Then went and stood with the other Candidate "Hi I'm Lema" she said to the boy.
He was a bit shy but smiled at the other girl then looked up at the
tall brownrider. "Can I ride with you sir?" It wasn't that he was
afraid of the greenrider... exactly.
"Sure," K'ale said with a smile. "Would you like to ride with P'les?"
He directed the question at the girl. The rest of the crowd had begun
to wander away when the green lost interest in them.
"Yes I would love to ride with P'les; I am Lema by the way" Lema said
with a bright smile; while walking to the green rider.
"Nice to meet you," both riders said at once and then grinned at each
other. Then they both turned to their dragons to help their respective
passengers mount.
The boys parents had returned with him far sooner than the brownrider
expected. They came close for one more hug and his mother handed him a
bag which K'ale snagged and tucked into his small cargo net.
"Up with you little lady," P'les grinned at the girl. "Step there,
there, and there," he pointed the way for her to mount with the help
of Peltath. "You'll sit on that pad there," he pointed at the rearmost
of the two seats on the green.
Lema did as instructed and soon sat atop Peltath; she smiled as she
saw how high up she was.
The two riders took the initiative and buckled their charges in. It
was rare to actually bring in two at the same time but there was a
first time for everything right?
K'ale mounted in front of the boy and waited for P'les to get situated.
"Ready," the greenrider asked the girl behind him.
"Ready as I will ever be" Lema said resting her hands on P'les' shoulders.
"Around my waist dear," he turned to tell her. /Between/ is cold and
dark so I need to be sure you're hanging on tight because I won't be
able to feel it."
}:Is yours ready?:{ Imalkyth queried the green.
K'ale lifted his arm as a signal and the two dragons leapt into the
sky together. They took a circuit around the small hold to let their
passengers settle a bit from the leap into the air.
Lema wrapped her arms around P'les waist and rested her chin on his
shoulder after yawning a bit.
A moment later they were /between/ and then burst into the bright sun
over Dragonsfall Weyr.
Lema gasped at the sight before her; she had never seen so many
dragons in one place. She looked up and saw the queen flaying off to
their right; her curiosity got the best of her.
"Is that the queen flying over there?" Lema asked.
P'les' knew the sight very well and breathed his own sigh of wonder.
"Yes," he smiled. "That's Teseada's gold Onnyth. Isn't she a sight to
behold? You know Immalkyth, that's K'ale's brown over there," he
pointed at their escort. "He flew her once."
"She really is; wait from what I remember hearing from others only
bronzes fly the queen" Lema said.
As they spiraled down into the bowl P'les chuckled. "It's not unheard
of for a brown to catch a younger gold, but they get smarter with age.
It wasn't the biggest clutch," he shrugged.
"I bet it wasn't; and by the way you have a very beautiful green" Lema said
"Thank you," he replied with a smile. "You should go find the
headwoman and give her that token. She'll get you all settled."
