After his usual chat with Puwul, Rayan turned to leave the tavern, when he
spotted a lone drinker that seemed vaguely familiar. Hadn't he been at his
installment ceremony? "Good evening, Journeyman," he offered in friendly
greeting.
Not recognizing the voice, Chupsin was momentarily surprised to see the
Master there when he turned. "Ah well met Hallmaster. I'd offer you a drink
but then..this is all yours after all." Tourniquet's eyes could be seen
over his shoulder. The firelizard had attached himself to Chupsin's back,
claws digging into the leather braiding on his tunic seams.
"Well, once it's Puwuls, I have to pay like everyone else." Rayan laughed
good-naturedly. "But let me pour you a drink, I was just bringing some new
samples to Puwul and happen to have some left. Care for something
stronger?" Always good to have people trying new stuff. It was good for
business.
"Maybe a bit. I have to stand duty later so I can't do too much." Of course
Chupsin knew his levels and knew how much he could stand. Then again, when
a Hallmaster was offering hospitality, you didn't turn it down.
"Just a taste then," Rayan said as he produced the bottle and went off to
fetch a small glass. He was back in a second. "This is a kind of herbal
concoction my Masters have been working on for a while now. It should have
a freshness to it you won't find in other liquors frequently." He poured
Chupsin just enough for a decent taste.
The healer waited then sniffed before taking a small drink, then another,
tasting it. He felt strange being served by Rayan, but he appreciated the
liquor being given to him all the same. "Very nice. Might be good chilled."
"We tried and opinions differed so much, we figured it was best left to the
consumer's own preference." Rayan replied, though he added 'chilled' onto
his mental list of votes.
"Oh indeed but you can always recommend something." Chupsin considered
voicing a question, thought better of it, but then decided he might as
well. He didn't know if Rayan knew just who he was yet. "So Master, have
you found a new Headwoman yet?"
Rayan shook his head in disappointment. "The candidates we've had so far
have turned out far from adequate. I can only hope our temporary
replacement is going to hold out long enough. She's getting along in turns
and is really looking forward to some peace and quiet."
"Ah well any of the journeymen have wives that need something to do?" That
was usually a place to start and it kept things in house.
"First place I checked," Rayan said with a rueful smile. "We'll find
someone, it might just take a bit more time. How is your sister settling
in, anyway? No chance she'll be coming back to us?"
That produced a very dark look. As far as he was concerned, he had no idea
how Chaysea was doing. She had treated her family with very low regard and
selfishness after all. "No idea. She hasn't written so I suppose she's
still there." Thankfully he didn't have to attend Hatchings at Dolphin Cove.
"Hmm, that's such a shame," Rayan said, catching the tension there. He had
always liked Chaysea and he still regretted her leaving. "Well, I'd better
get back to business. Thank you for your opinion on the liquor, I'll be
sure to share it with my masters."
"Pleased to be of service Hallmaster." Chupsin watched the man go about his
business and wondered how he would be different than his predecessor. Not
puzzling over it too long, he poured himself another drink and promptly
began trying to forget his sister.
