Characters: K'ran, Genna
Description: K'ran and Genna have another chat over dinner.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 10, day 14 of Turn 7
K'ran was late to dinner and most of his wing had eaten already, so he
scanned the cavern looking for a familiar face while balancing his
plate and the klah. He headed over towards Genna when he saw her.
"My duty to your Lissath," he told her with a smile.
"And mine to Rogueth," Genna smiled, pleasantly surprised at the
wingleader's company. "Hello K'ran. How have you been doing?"
"The Wing's doing well this month. I finally feel settled in." Four
Threadfalls with him in charge, no fatal losses. It felt good. "I hear
your class is flying now?"
"Good," Genna smiled, genuinely pleased to hear that. "We have, yes! That
first time.. it was incredible. Everything everyone ever says it is." There
was still a glow of pride and enthusiasm in her eyes as her mind went back
to her first flight with Lissath.
He recognized that soft look and gave her a bigger smile. "Now you're on
your way to being a full rider. Soon you'll get to the fun part of
drilling - or at least, that's what my classmates said. I enjoyed it all."
"What did they say the fun part was, then?' Genna asked curiously,
wondering if she should already know what he meant.
"Drills a-dragonback, now that you're both flying. And soon /between/,
and being able to go whereever you want. To be fair, I looked forward
to those parts too - but I didn't mind ground drills, or even the
hidework."
"Ahh, yes, that way," Genna smiled. "I can agree on that. Though, regarding
hidework, maybe you can do mine if you like it so much?" She foresaw a LOT
of hidework in her future and wasn't quite sure yet how she felt about that.
He laughed. "I'm not sure I'd know what to do for some of the goldriders'
work," he admitted.
"Well, neither do I, they say one can learn," Genna grinned. "But we'll
see. Maybe I'll turn out to be a natural." She wasn't counting on it, but
she'd try her hardest anyway.
"Have you had anything interesting going on on a rest day?" He knew the
weyrlings didn't have much free time otherwise.
"Resting?" Genna winked. "Well, as much as that is possible with Lissath's
constant nagging." The young gold certainly was a big fan of keeping her
busy, rest day or not. "But no, no plans as of yet."
"All metallic dragons are the same, hmm?" Rogueth certainly had nagged
him. "So no hobbies?"
"None," Genna said. "Not that I had any I was particularly interested in,
before I impressed, I mean." Genna shrugged. "I wasn't allowed to do much
besides the usual ladies' duties."
"I'm sorry. I keep forgetting how difficult that must be."
"Don't be sorry, I'm just glad my life changed like it did." Genna
laughed. "However, on the subject of hobbies I could use some input.
Do you have any interesting pastimes?"
"Most of mine involve traveling. You'd be surprised at the wide
variety of places on Pern. Once you and Lissath can fly and /between/,
if you'd like, we could show you some."
He hoped that invitation had been phrased appropriately. He hadn't
wanted to come across as creepy, but traveling was his pleasure and so
many preferred to be weyrbound, which he never understood.
"Oh, I'm so looking forward to that. It's not far away now," she smiled.
"Anything you can recommend?" She did catch the invitation,
but cautiousness when it came to such matters was practically bred in to
her, so she avoided it tactfully.
"I'm biased towards Ista, the last Weyr I was at. There's black sand
beaches, so different from the white sand at - well, have you seen Dolphin
Cove?" He realized quickly she might not have. "I'd say that seeing a more
standard Southern beach might make Ista's contrast much greater."
"No, no, I've never been outside of Dragonfall's territory," Genna laughed.
"But I'm certain that is going to change soon! Do tell me, what's so much
better about black sand beaches?"
K'ran leaned back in his chair, envisioning it in his mind so he could
describe it to her.
"Well, white sand is what most people think of and see first. And it's
very pretty in its effects. Imagine the sky in this territory when it's
late spring, that clear light blue that seems almost impossible? Now
imagine that's stretching out forever into this light colored, almost
turquoise sea, and it's coming towards shore on white-crested waves. If
that shore is a pristine white, then everything is light - the sky, the
sea, the sand. Everything just _glows_.
"Now imagine Ista. The sea is tropical, just as it is at many places in
the South. So the sea is light as it stretches out towards the horizon,
and the sky is still brilliant blue, but the sand is dark. So when the
white waves come up to the sand, it leaves behind white foam on dark sand,
and the color contrast is just striking there. Some people think it's not
as paradisiacal, but I think it's fascinating."
As K'ran talked, Genna leaned forward without noticing, totally wrapped up
in his poetic description. When he was done talking, she shot back a bit,
as if jolted from a daydream and smiled brightly. "Now I totally need to go
to Ista," she grinned. "Have you had Harper training by chance?"
"Nothing formal beyond the classes everyone gets. Though while I was
volunteering at Dolphin Cove, the Harper Hall was there. It was a great
chance to unofficially talk to harpers and to learn many things about how
to speak."
"It sounds like you took that opportunity with both hands," Genna smiled.
"Do you play an instrument too, by chance?" She'd always liked music,
though she didn't fancy herself a musician. Sheet music had proven to be
too big a step for her during the Harper lessons at the Hold.
"The drums, but I never really grasped the gitar or pipes," he answered.
"Ah yes, rhythm," Genna smiled. "I've had moderate success with
singing myself, but I get headaches just thinking about the sheet
music our Harper tried to make me learn when he found out."
"I can't carry a tune," he admitted. "And sheet music is quite
difficult. I don't know how the Harpers do it, but I envy them their
mind."
"Oh yes, so do I," Genna said with a small smile, thinking of Nokala and
the help she was providing. "Imagine what the world would be like without
Harpers!" A world in which she'd always remain dim-witted, that was for
sure.
"Quieter and at a loss," he said seriously, shaking his head at what a
waste that would be.
}:We have the Infirmary reports,:{ Rogueth said.
"My dragon reminds me I have a report to finish before bed, but it was a
pleasure to talk with you again, Genna."
"Likewise, K'ran, you're always good for a delightful conversation," as she
said that, she placed one hand lightly on his shoulder, giving him a warm
smile. "I hope talk to you again soon."
