Bryvin sat in a comfortable chair sipping hot klah and watching the
rain sluice down the windows of his study. There didn't seem to be
enough time to relax in the last few weeks. In fact the last time he'd
had any leisure had been aboard ship on his voyage home with his
bride. Not the one he'd wanted but the one he'd found awaiting him in
Turquoise Bay. Right now though he planned to spent a few moments
relaxing with his cup. His lips curved up as he remembered that final
dinner.
~~~Flashback~~~
Relik sat down at the table, reaching for the bowl of sweetener to add
to his klah. Dinner would be served soon and the Hallmaster was
certainly expecting it promptly. After attending the wedding, he'd
agreed to go back aboard ship with the new Lord Holder for a few
reasons. The first being that he'd wanted to see how the vessel had
turned out with the new outfitting. The second being that he didn't
know how the steward was going to work as Lord Holder and he found
himself curious. Bryvin was not Morin, for sure. The third being that
he would rather be on a boat than anything else.
Bryvin escorted his wife into the Captain's cabin which had been given
over to the Hallmaster while the Lord and his Lady had their own
personal accommodations aboard. Part of his arrangements for this trip
had been comfortable adjoining cabins with his own provided
furnishings and smaller group accommodations for their attendants.
He pulled Xeladrie's fingers from his elbow and handed her into a
waiting chair. He'd found that he didn't seem to get seasick but he
was less certain of her.
"Hallmaster," he smiled respectfully as he always had. "How are you
this evening?"
"Well enough and you both? Hopefully you're hungry." His eyes went toward
the new Lady and wondered if the little miss wasn't feeling too great about
her recent nuptials. Then again, he knew her father and figured it would be
about the same either way. He had a younger wife himself.
"I think I am now," Xeladrie said with a polite smile at the Hallmaster.
Her fingers gripped the side of the chair carefully. She'd been somewhat
nauseated when she got on the boat, but was getting used to it now.
Recognizing the signs, Relik tried not to smile. She'd get the hang of
it hopefully. If not, she could have problems in future if she planned
to travel much. "Well that's a good thing since here's the food." The
cabin steward began to set out the mess and Relik looked forward to
it.
She reached for her water and sipped carefully from that before
looking to the food. "Do your duties allow you much time at sea,
Hallmaster?"
"Well, I can't like I used to, but I have my own vessel which I can
take out on restdays or use to get to the Hold or even the Weyr if I
need to. For longer trips, I can always use our Southern Star or ask
the watchdragon. Of course, my Second can go for me on some business."
For the most part, he was now going to be land-bound but it didn't mean
he didn't still feel the pull of the water from time to time.
Bryvin wasn't eager to spend time out recreational sailing like the
Hallmaster though he was usually comfortable in all but the worst
conditions on the water. He sympathized with his wife's queasy stomach
and thanked the stars for the calm crossing. He reached for the bread
and held the bowl out to Xeladrie. "How about this," he said softly.
"The weather has held just as you predicted Relik."
Xeladrie accepted the bread and slowly ate a piece, hoping it would help
her stomach quickly.
"It sounds nice to have your own vessel. Do you prefer the sea to
dragonback?" she asked.
"Sea trips are longer and fraught with more peril, though I detest the
coldness of /between/. At least on a boat, I am in control." Indeed,
Relik hated the cold. The cold reminded him of the icy cold water and
the possibility of drowning or hypothermia. Sailors had both love and
a healthy fear of the ocean unless
they were fools.
"Well the good news is that we're almost there, One more night at sea
and we should see Sunstone in the late morning. Am I right
Hallmaster?" Bryvin toyed with the food in front of him. He had a
healthy appetite but wasn't going to eat too much when his wife could
eat so little.
"If there isn't any hard weather," Relik qualified. The Hallmaster
began to eat his meal, glad he had no qualms. "It's not a long trip by
any means on a vessel this size." That meant she would be in her new
home sooner rather than later. Then, Relik would be making the trip
back to the Hall. He had his own boat docked for that purpose waiting
on him though.
"I hope there isn't," Xeladrie said with a groan that was only a little
played up to garner sympathies.
"So smaller boats take longer?" she asked after nibbling on a cracker.
"Generally yes. They can't eat up the distance like a larger maid. Smaller sails
aye? Course they can race better in the short term, but the ladies will beat the girls
every time in the long run." He was surprised that she was curious enough to ask
questions and about such things that were the pursuits of men.
~~~End Flashback~~~
Of course the rest of the meal had gone along the same vein but that
had been the first glimpse he'd had of his wife's intelligence. She
was more than the simple bit of fluff he'd first thought and he had
hopes of strong smart sons from her.
He wrapped his fingers around the now cooling mug and set it aside.
When he heard the rap on his door. "Come," he called and rose from the
comfort of a few moments reflection.
