Aishara

Aishara

Being fairly early in the morning on a restday, not many people were
in the dining cavern, but R'taran was pleasantly surprised to see
Aishara taking a seat. He had been wanting to approach her since his
conversation with R'enh, but with his brother's wedding and the normal
time demands of a wingrider, he just had not found the time.

"Mind if I sit with you? Looks like most everyone's sleeping in today."

"Goog morning, R'taran. Feel free, it's a free Weyr and I don't bite,"
Aishara replied with good humour.

With a chuckle, R'taran sat down. "Well generally that's a good
thing, though a little biting now and again isn't bad either,' he
teased. "So what are your plans for this fine restday?"

"You're naughty boy," Aishara said and pointed him accusingly with a spoon.
"As for plans: go riding, catch up with granma and count how many new
babies my cousins have produced."

Taking a sip of his klah he nodded. "A family day, huh? Do you ride often?"

"As much as I can, albeit being dragonrider leaves me little free time
for it," Aishara replied but ruefully.

"You're doing better than me. I don't think I've ridden since I
Impressed, though it was one of the few things I looked forward to
when I was younger. Not sure what Qharterioth would make of it.
Would probably want to know why I was riding food."

"Ayumith doesn't understand it either, she sulks the whole the time I
spend with runners. Unless something or someone comes to distract
her," Aishara told him with amused grin.

"Well, anytime you need a distraction, let me know. Qharterioth would
be happy to do the honors, or at least make the attempt." R'taran
picked up a piece of fruit from his plate and bit into it.

"I'll remember that," Aishara replied and sipped her drink.

Swallowing his fruit and washing it down with klah, he asked, "So, much
of your father's family remains here at the Weyr? You mentioned a
grandmother and prolific cousins."

"Most of them, although some have transferred to other Weyrs. My
father was only one of his siblings who left. He didn't Impress, so he
went to pursue his career as beastcrafter and ended up to Emerald
Falls hold," Aishara told him.

R'taran nodded as he bit into his toast. He remembered the
beastcrafter well as his father had dealt with him on more than one
occasion. "Not that flying Thread leaves us with much free time, but
if you aren't irritating your dragon by fraternizing with runners or
counting babies, what do you like to do?

Aishara shrugged a bit. "Socialize, attend parties, the usual things."

Having to work at keeping his face impassive, R'taran just nodded and
took another bite. The usual things? In six turns he'd never
attended a party in the Weyr, unless one counted formal occasions like
Hatching feasts or Turn End events. He tried not to despair. He was
trying desperately hard to follow R'enh's advice but this was proving
difficult. Find out what she likes and listen to her. Well, she
liked runners, family, and parties. He continued to mull over where
to direct the conversation next while he continued eating his
breakfast.

The silence didn't make Aishara unconfortable at all. She just ate.
"Have you seen your father recently?" he asked, thinking of his own
recent jaunt to attend his brother's wedding.

"Not since the last Gather there," she replied. "Although I expect him
to come to visit for the next Hatching."

R'taran nodded, thinking about the upcoming clutch, and the Hatching
to follow. Would Paulton be on the Sands? "I recently attended my
elder brother's wedding and my younger brother asked me to bring him
to the Weyr. He wants to Stand. I told him I'd talk to my father
about having a Searchdragon meet him."

"Don't look at me, I'm not a searchrider, Ay never shown any interest
towards any candidates or potential candidates," Aishara replied
quickly, worried that she might be drafted to do a Search.

"No, I wasn't suggesting that," he assured her. "I have someone in
mind to help me out. You mentioned the hatching and I was thinking
how my brother might be Standing."

"Oh. Well, good luck to him if he does," Aishara said.

Taking a drink of his klah, R'taran thought it best not to share that
he wasn't really sure he wanted his brother to be Searched. With a
look at his empty plate, he replied, "Thanks." Unable to think of
anything to keep the conversation going, he thought back to his talk
with R'enh and wondered where he'd gone wrong. "I've some riding
straps that need some attention today," he said with a sigh. "It's
been nice talking with you, Aishara."

"Anytime, thank's for the company," Aishara replied with friendly tone
and started to collect her empty dishes.

Collecting his things as well R'taran stood. "Your company is far more
preferable to my own, so I'm the one that should be thanking you," he
said with a grin. "Perhaps we'll run into each other somewhere other
than the dining hall, sometime. Enjoy, your restday, Aishara."

"Likewise. See you," Aishara replied cheerfully and headed to return
the dishes for the kitchen.

R'taran watched her go with a sigh. He didn't know exactly what he'd
been hoping for but he knew that wasn't quite it.
