The Technician waited politely on the bench outside of the Steward's
office. Finally the door cracked open and an understeward came out. "He
can see you now."
Zakis walked in. He'd seen the man around but didn't know him very well.
So he was careful to be respectful in his greeting to the Steward.
"Journeyman Technician Zakis here with a report," he began.
"Please come in and sit down," Sarban had been a seacrafter himself before
changing careers so he had a respect for crafters. "If you want some klah, I
think some is brewing..." He looked over to check the pot hanging over the
small
fire. It wasn't steaming yet.
"That would be good, thank you sir." Zakis took his seat.
"I was sent here to let you know about the status of one of the generators
at the falls," he added.
"Oh? Is there a problem?" The technicians were responsible for routine
annual maintenance to the equipment. Sarban basically just made sure they
had
whatever they needed and left the situation alone as long as everything
worked.
They had no plans to expand the power plant since they had no plans to
expand
the Hold since the population had declined. When they had more people, they
would send them to the minor holds that were empty.
"A minor one, Steward, but it might get worse. I guess some of the piping
froze during the snows and cracked a bit. I'd like to get it repaired but
we might need some tools from the main Technicians Hall. Would you be able
to arrange that?"
"Like what sort of tools?" Most of what they had in the way of tools came
from the smithcraft. The technicians just used them differently. A leak
could
cause a serious problem, however. If the pipe burst... Sarban didn't want to
think about it.
"It'll depend on the extent of the damage. If there's just piping
cracks, we can just weld the weak spots with what's on hand." He
hesitated before continuing, "But if you asked me, I'd like to inspect
the entire hydro system before all the ice melts, make sure that
there's nothing worse."
"Then do it." His tone brooked no argument. In this, Sarban was in
agreement. If it needed to be done, then it would be. They couldn't
afford to lose their water, heat, or electricity. They could survive but
it wouldn't be easy or convenient among other things. "Once you
inspect everything, you will know exactly what needs to be done and
the tools you need, correct?"
"Yessir," Zakis replied. He figured the Steward probably wouldn't be
interested in the details of circuit repair and equipment.
"How long will it take so I can get the orders in?" Sometimes things took
longer to get even with the riverboats and other avenues. He didn't want to
delay, knowing how the weather was changing.
"Two days to do a full survey." Maybe only one, but he'd rather be
thorough than miss something. "I can report back with you as soon as
I know more."
"Fair enough." Sarban stood up and let Zakis know that was all he needed.
He'd have to tell Corowal.
