Feeling as if he were in a daze or a wonderful dream from which he
never wanted to awaken, P'ton fed his little bronze a good sized hunk
of meat.
"Careful, he'll take a finger right along with the meat and never even
notice," a deep voice said from behind him.
P'ton turned to offer his brother a jubilant smile. R'taran thumped
him affectionately on the back and looked down at the recently hatched
bronze. He was small for a bronze but had marched with such
single-minded determination toward his brother on the Sands that
R'taran had no doubt that the newly hatched dragon held a strong
character.
}:I'd never do that!:{ Cirynath insisted offended by the very thought,
pausing in his ravenous consumption to look at the newcomer. He had
to look _way_ up.
**He's joking.** Out loud he added, "This is my brother, R'taran,"
}:He is your clutch mate? He is much bigger.:{
P'ton chuckled. **And you are much bigger than the greens, but
actually he and I were not born at the same time. I'm younger and
still growing.**
R'taran watched fondly as his brother got that glazed look that
indicated he was talking to his new lifemate. Soon he would be able
to multi-task and it wouldn't be so obvious. Watching his brother
Impress had brought back fond memories.
}:They are good memories.:{ Qharterioth commented. He liked it when
his rider remembered their early days together so that he could share
in the memory that his draconic mind wouldn't call up on its own.
After silently agreeing with his brown, R'taran lifted a package
wrapped with course cloth and tied with a string. "This is from
Mother, to wear at the hatching feast. She said she had already begun
new gather clothes for you when you came to the Weyr, but had yet to
finish them."
"Mother? She's here?"
"Mother and Father are both here and very proud."
"They came?"
"Indeed. I brought them myself."
Too stunned to answer, P'ton fed Cirynath another piece of meat. He
couldn't believe his parents had come to the Hatching! They hadn't
come to R'taran's, but then of course they hadn't had a dragonrider in
the family to bring them.
"He is a fine looking bronze. Deep chested and looks as if he will
have a well balanced wingspan," R'taran observed. "What's his name?"
"Cirynath, and I'm now P'ton," the young man stated proudly.
Noting the approach of the Weyrlingmaster Third, R'taran nodded his
greeting. "You'll have your hands full with this pair, L'pin. I can
tell already."
"I look forward to working with them," the blurider replied with a
beaming smile directed at them both. He clapped his hand on P'ton's
shoulder. "Congratulations, young man."
"Thank you, sir,"P'ton replied with unbridled joy evident on his face.
"I told you, didn't I? That I knew my dragon was on the Sands? But
he's mores incredible than I ever dreamt possible."
"You were right. To Impress your first time is very lucky. Can I see?"
L'pin asked.
"Of course. Cirynath this is the Weyrlingmaster Third L'pin. He and
his dragon, Chaneth, will help to teach us all we need to know."
The bronze dragonet looked curiously at the bluerider.
"I'll leave you to it, then," R'taran said with a nod. "See you at the
feast."
L'pin walked around Cirynath. "He certainly looks handsome enough so
far. I'll be interested to see how big he gets. Kopth is medium for a
bronze, but Riyanth is very large."
}:I will eat all the meat and I will grow big like Riyanth:{ Cirynath
said confidently, gobbling another piece of meat to prove his point.
"Hey, there, slow down. You'll not grow at all if you choke on your
food," P'ton cautioned. Then turning to L'pin he explained, "He's
planning on eating a full heardbeast and growing as big as his dam."
L'pin laughed. "Some bronzes get quite large. I'm sure you'll be one
of them. But not the whole herdbeast yet. You'll get there."
}:The first time you kill your own will be even better,:{ Chaneth told
the little bronze.
}:Really? Even better?:{ The meat tasted so good to the newly hatched
dragon that something even better was impossible to imagine. }:I want
to do that next time then:{
P'ton chuckled giving his bronze the last piece. "Once you grow a bit
more, then you can hunt."
"The oil's over there, by the way." The older man gestured at the
buckets. "Are you going to the feast when he's fed and settled? You're
allowed to stay out, just not too late."
P'ton grinned just a bit sheepishly and the time qualification given
his record on that front. Now that he had Cirynath, though, nothing
seemed as important as it once had. "Yes. R'taran said my parents are
here. I'm surprised they came," P'ton answered going for the
indicated bucket. "He said they're... pleased. This will be the
first time I've done something that meets with my father's approval
in, well, forever."
"I hope your reunion goes well, then. He has a right to be proud." L'pin
always tried to be there for the boys and girls who weren't so lucky.
