Genna

Genna

Well, enough was enough. After fumbling through lessons with a cloudy head
for the third time that sevenday, Genna decided it was time to try and get
something done about that frustrating cold. It wasn't that she was actually
sick, but the runny nose was driving her crazy and having to breathe
through her mouth all day and night was having it's effect as well.

So, she walked into the Infirmary on her break time and looked around for a
healer to help her out. She hadn't expected the Weyrhealer - she recognised
him instantly from his knots - to be at the front desk and she smiled
sheepishly at him. "Uhm, hi. Sir. I, umm, would like to see a healer."

"You found one," Taren turned around to look her with friendly grin and Aes
on his shoulder warbled a greeting too.

"I.. um.. have a cold that's been driving me crazy. It's making it hard to
focus on lessons. I was hoping you may have something to help me with it."
Genna spoke with the nasal tone found often in one seriously congested nose.

"Come along, goldrider, let's see what I can do for you," Taren gestured
her to follow him. Naturally, he was going to treat the young golderider
himself. Priviledges of being Weyrhealer...he could pick out all the
interesting patients for himself. He led her to a cubicle and pulled the
curtains close.

"Thank you," Genna sighed with relief as she followed him into the cubicle.
She'd been afraid he'd tell her to just go home and rest. There wasn't much
time for resting in a weyrling's life.

"So, you're Genna, was it?" Taren checked her name, while taking out a hide
to make notes.

"Yes, that's me," Genna nodded, resisting the urge to add 'weyrling to gold
Lissath' as she did often in introductions.

"So, how long you're been sick and what exactly are the symptoms?" he
asked, on profesional mode now.

"It started about four days ago, I felt a little clammy in the mornings
with a sore throat and my nose blocked up. But it's gotten worse over the
past few days and it's getting increasingly harder to focus on lessons,"
Genna summarised quickly.

Taren made symphatic sound and took out wooden spatula and stetoscope. "I'm
going to look at your throat and then listen to your lungs. First, open
your mouth and say AAA. Then, please take off your tunic or at least roll
it up."

Doing as she was told, Genna opened her mouth and let out a nice long
'AAAA'. The she proceeded to roll up her shirt, smiling to herself as she
thought of how much trouble she used to have with showing skin. The Weyr
really had changed her.

Taren did his exam with effiency of long experience. He also felt the
glands on her neck. "Alright, you have a upper respitory infection, also
know as common cold. Lungs are clear, so the infection hasn't spread
downwards. Rest, time and plenty of liquid is only things that really help.
I can give you something to lessen the sympthom. Rest as much as you can. I
will send a note for the Weyrlingmaster to lighten your duties as much as
they can," he told her. He know what the Weyrling's schedule was. In
addition, she had a gold dragon and they were usually demanding and lot of
work. "If you don't rest, there's risk it developes into sinuntitis or
bronchtitis."

Genna looked a little troubled at that, brows furrowing slightly. "Do you
mean bed-rest, or just taking it a little easier?" she asked cautiously.
There was no way she could stay in bed all day at the moment. There was
just too much to do!

"Taking it easier, not heavy physical work," Taren replied. "Read, knit, do
something that doesn't require moving around a lot. Not easy to arrange
when you have dragon to tend to."

Genna grimaced. She hoped she'd be able to find someone available that
Lissath trusted enough to wash her without Genna's help. "I'm sure I can
manage somehow," she sighed. "At least I'll be able to catch up on my
reading assignments."

"Good. Meanwhile, I'll give you a mixture of herbs to ease the symptoms.
Brew it like a tea, thrice a day until you feel better. Best take it at the
morning, noon and evening," Taren continued his instructions.

"That would be wonderful," Genna said with a sigh of relief. Anything that
would get rid of that fuzzy, congested feeling in her head was more than
welcome. "Should I take the first tea right away?"

"Yes, I'll fetch them," Taren answered and left her long enough to make her
the mixture. The herbs were ready, all he had to do was mix them to a jar
for her. "Here you go. One full teaspoon per mug," he smiled and gave her
the jar.

"Thank you, sir," Genna smiled after another sniff. "I hope it starts
working soon." They had their Blooding coming up in just a little over a
week, she couldn't really stand to miss a lot of training, even if she was
only to ferry for the Queen's wing. She got up to take her leave.

"Well, you know how it is with colds. Untreated, it lasts a two sevendays.
Treated, it lasts fourteen days," Taren said with deadpan expression.

"Uh-uh," Genna agreed with a scrunch of the nose. "But hopefully I can
start functioning again before the fourteen days are over. Anyway, thank
you for your attention, sir," Genna nodded politely. "I'll let you get
back to your other duties now."

"Take care of yourself, Genna and don't hesitate to drop by again if you
don't start feeling better," Taren replied with genuine compassion and kept
the curtain open for her.

"I will, thanks again," Genna said before passing through the curtain and
heading back to the barracks.
