Description: Felarin's snoring keeps Sherevair awake - and Sherevair keeps Felarin awake
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 10, day 9 of Turn 3
"Um, excuse me. Felarin," the candidate said, gently shaking the older boy on the cot next to his. "You're snoring is keeping me and Dysbrik awake. Could you keep it down?"
Felarin snorted, then suddenly jerked awake. The unfamiliar dark of the candidates' quarters made him disoriented. "What? What is it?"
"I'm sorry, Felarin," Sherevair said gently, "but you're snoring, and though I understand that is something you have no conscious control over, it's keeping a couple of us awake."
"What?" Felarin looked confused. "I don't snore. Must be someone else. Go to sleep." He grabbed his thin blanket, wrapped it around his shoulders, and rolled over.
Sherevair shook him gently again. "Um, Felarin, I'm sorry but, I made _sure_ it was you."
"What? Go t' sleep," Felarin mumbled, already half asleep himself.
Sleeping in a dorm full of boys was bad enough without having them wake him up on purpose.
"Perhaps if you tried sleeping on your back you wouldn't be quite so loud," Sherevair offered helpfully.
Sleep. "That's what I'm trying to do."
"But maybe if you changed your position you wouldn't snore so loudly.
We all have to live together as best we can..."
Felarin sighed, now thoroughly annoyed. And mostly awake. "Will you leave me alone, then?" "I... just am trying to help..."
"Okay. I'll sleep on my back then." Felarin turned over so that he was staring at the ceiling. The boy beside him was a silhouette in the dark. "Good night."
"Thank you, Felarin. I'm sorry to wake you," Sherevair whispered.
"Sleep well."
Felarin intended to do just that - and he fell back into sleep quickly. It wasn't long before he was snoring again, and louder than before. It sounded as if someone was taking a saw to the roots of the cliff.
"Um... Felarin... It's me again..."
The older candidate woke up with a jerk. "What? 'M on my back..." he mumbled.
"Maybe you should try your other side," Sherevair said helpfully.
"Fine. Sure." He rolled over and drew his blanket a little tighter around his shoulders. Shards and shells... why wouldn't the kid leave him alone?! What was his name, anyway... Shiver? Shervar? "Thank you. Sorry to bother you." Sherevair slipped back into his cot. "Good night, Felarin."
"'Night." This time the silence lasted a little longer, but as inevitably as the moons rose over Pern's horizon, Felarin started to snore again.
Sherevair tried to be careful as he gently lifted the pillow with the older boy's head on it, but inevitably Felarin woke up. "Oh, sorry. Did I wake you?"
"What are you _doing_?!" Felarin grabbed his pillow back and glared at Sheravair, but there wasn't enough light to make the expression effective.
"Well, I thought, you know, if I put my pillow under your head _too_... you know... sleeping at an angle... Maybe that would help your snoring." He smiled apologetically, but of course the boy couldn't see him in the dark. "I didn't mean to wake you..."
"But you did. Again." Felarin grabbed his pillow and turned over. Again. "Go to sleep."
Sherevair cleared his throat nervously. "Well, now, see, I'm trying too... We all are trying too... But your snoring is keeping us awake."
"I don't snore," Felarin mumbled. "Forgive me for saying so, Felarin, but you most certainly do. And I think that if you put this second pillow under your head maybe..."
"You're not going to leave me alone, are you!?" Felarin said crossly.
Sherevair had been harassing him all night! "Well, its not that I don't understand your need for sleep," Sherevair said quietly, "its just that... well, we want to sleep too and..."
"Shards and shells. That's it!" Felarin abruptly swung his legs over the edge of his cot and grabbed his pillow. "I'll go sleep on the bleeding beach, okay?! It seems like that's the only way that you'll sharding well leave me alone!"
"Ok," Sherevair said contritely. "But it might be a bit chilly out there, Felarin. You might need an extra blanket."
With a wordless growl, Felarin snatched his blanket off his bed, tucked his pillow under his arm, and stalked out of the dormitory. Snoring.... ha! It was just plain rude of the younger boy to turn it into such a big issue, and to keep interrupting his sleep like that.
_Some_ of them had things to do at the Weyr besides Candidate chores!
