Next thing Uetia realized, was that she was staring the assistant Weyrhealer's face. Had she fainted?
"Easy, Uetia." Reeva placed a light hand to the woman's shoulder in case she tried to rise. "For the moment, you're better off lying down. Just take a few deep breaths."
"What happened?" Uetia asked. Right now, her mind refused to accept the truth.
"You fainted," Tamah replied. "Do you know what job it was to get you to the infirmary? You're a big girl," the harbor master covered his concern with jokes.
"It's a Weyr full of dragons, Harbor Master. There's not much we can't shift around here." She finished up with the cup she was preparing, and passed it to the woman. "Drink some of that down. You've had a bit of a shock..." Understatement of the turn, that, really. "It will help a little."
She seriously lacked sense of humor, Tamah decided but smartly kept his mouth shut.
"The baby?" Uetia asked, placing a protective hand over her belly. She carefully sipped from the cup.
"The little one will be fine, although the less stress you feel the better for them. And there's nothing in that concoction to upset them either. You're more my concern by far."
Uetia just nodded. She was still in shock. She didn't know what she should be feeling or doing.
Reeva pressed a concerned hand to the woman's brow. Cool and slightly clammy. Not the news she really wanted. "Please tell me if you feel nauseous, however. I am sorry for your loss, Rider."
"I feel cold," Uetia said with faint voice.
Tamah touched her hand in a gesture of comfort. "Shall I fetch your uncle U'das?" he asked.
Uetia nodded at him.
"Master Reeva, I leave her to your excellent care," the harbour master said and took his leave.
Reeva gently pulled a blanket over the woman, then placed two fingers lightly on her wrist, timing the pulse. Better then she had expected, although the pregnancy could be helping with that. She still wasn't that happy, though. Not that they could do anything but wait for the tea to take some effect. She sat down quietly, keeping her face and voice pleasant and calm. "You may feel the baby react to your distress, though Uetia. Don't feel bad about it. If you wish to talk, please do, but you don't have to."
"The baby. The baby's all that I have left of Sabonus. I don't want anything to happen to it," Uetia said, tears welling in her eyes. She felt a surge of fierce protectiveness towards the unborn life growing inside her.
"You'll both be fine. You've no need for concern."
"I hope you're right," Uetia murmured. An anger, rage stirred inside her, replacing the chill numbness of shock. How did Sabonus dare to do this to her? Go and die and leave her all alone.
}:You're not alone, :{ Sirjath reminded her.
"I'm always right, me."
Reeva made it light enough to be taken as a joke, but soft enough to be respectful if she found the humor off putting. "I've friends on the staff here who will be able to help you with how you're feeling, Uetia. Or you are welcome to talk things over with me."
Uetia just nodded. Somehow yelling at the healer didn't feel like right thing to do.
Reeva looked the woman over, aware of some of what was simmering inside. Sadly, there wasn't much more the healers could do to heal this most terrible of wounds. "I hate people who's reaction to your tragedy is to tell you about theirs like that fixes anything. But I lost a husband too and I know some of how you're feeling. Don't feel obliged to be polite for the sake of it. Right now is about you, not me."
Uetia gave her a grim little smile. "I feel like I wanted to hit someone," she admitted.
Reeva nodded. "That's not unexpected when everything you cling to is stripped away. The SeaCraft can be a cruel one."
"Tell me about it," Uetia grunted.
