A Long Day Just Got a Bit Longer

Writers: AL, Len
Date Posted: 23rd April 2015

Characters: Halah, Sofeya
Description: Halah runs into Sofeya and discovers the two don't really like one another
Location: Amber Hills Hold
Date: month 12, day 4 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: Zelanka, Chupsin, Stennar

Halah sighed mightily. It had been a long day of helping Zelanka with all
the spring paper work, seeing what they had in storage and what they were
going to need for the upcoming year. Not physically hard work, but mentally
draining all the same. And with such running about! The young woman pushed
the handkerchief off her head as she walked up the stairs, one more task to
complete. Her golden hair escaped the braids, sticking to her face and to
her neck as she walked. There was nothing she could do about that, but it
didn't matter, she only had one more thing to do and then she could go take
a bath and relax.

Ahead she spotted a curvy figure of one of the drudges. "Heya Sofeya," she
smiled at the woman. "Do you think you could send a message to Chupsin that
Zelanka wants to see him as soon as he gets a moment?" She remembered that
the drudge was in the company of the healers before, she would be a good
one to ask.

Sofeya straightened and turned, her eyes narrowed as they fell across the
other woman. With a small sniff, she tilted her head to regard her and
finally retorted, "Why don't you go ask him yourself?"

Halah stopped like she had been slapped. That wasn't the answer she was
expecting. "I...er...I...well, Zelanka needs me and well..." She nodded her
head at the non-job that Sofeya wasn't really doing. "Well, you didn't look
busy."

"That doesn't mean I should have to do your dirty work for you. I've worked
_hard_ all day, bending over, scrubbing, and making sure that the residents
of this Hold are clean and their rooms spotless." The last thing Sofeya
wanted was to add more work to her day. "Including that of Healer Chupsin,
cleaning his tools so they are properly sanitized for his patients, in
addition to other tasks."

"Well, I've worked hard to, thank you very much. I've done_everything_you
have this morning and all afternoon I've been Zelanka's assistant." Halah
crossed her arms, her earlier uncertainly giving way to irritation at
Sofeya's attitude. "And I still have several candlemarks of helping her to
go. So don't think you hold the record on working hard."

"You call that work? Telling others what to do, where to do it, and how to
do it?" Sofeya lifted her chin and settled her intense gaze upon the other
woman. "My shifts are as long as yours, if not longer, yet you seem all
set to add more to it without considering the drop dead bone weariness of
the person you're ordering about."

Halah raised an eyebrow. "Did you forget already that I was doing the same
work you were just this morning and early afternoon. Then I've been running
around for Zelanka all afternoon. And I'll still be working long after
you've gone back to your cot." Or to another man's, she thought in her head.

"Indeed, then perhaps Zelanka is working _you_ too hard, hm?" Sofeya's
eyebrows arched upward. "It sounds like to me you're nothing but a drudge
with a different name."

"Just like you, eh?"

"Yes, just like me. You think a new title makes you better? Think again.
It's all the same. We work hard but get little to no credit. A new
title's not going to change that, so don't go thinking you're all high and
mighty." Sofeya shrugged. "As for me, I'm off to bed. I'll leave your
work, for I surely wouldn't want to keep you." With that, she twirled
around and flounced off.

"Right...'your' bed my arse," Halah muttered to herself. The night just got
a lot longer.
