N'call

There were some events that nobody could miss in a Weyr. Goldflights were
one, and the results of said flight another.

All the dragons began the slow, unmistakeable hum that greeted the arrival
of new life. It was something the whole Weyr was attuned too, especially the
candidates, who knew that maybe, just maybe by the end of the day they would
be among the riders, and feted that evening before their new lives started
with the rude awakening of hungry dragons the following day.

Teseada had managed to get a new dress down to her temporary weyr by the
sands, where she hastily dressed and arranged her hair, even as she waited
for N'call to arrive and escort her to watch the upcoming events.

He was buttoning up his new suade tunic with it's beautifully carved
bone buttons. His rank knots were still a bit askew on his shoulder
but the tuic fit him perfectly. The white shirt beneath was also
rather new and he pulled the cuffs down so they showed near his hands.

"You look lovely Tes," he smiled as he came in.

"Thanks," she said. "That tunic suits you."

"Thank you," he said with a short bow and fiddled with his knots. "Can
you get this," he said helplessly turning his shoulder to her.

"Come here," she said, reaching up as she spoke, ready to adjust the knots
so they lay flat and would show his rank.

He watched as her deft hands straightened them and then he smiled down
at her. "Ready?"

"One more thing," she said.

"Oh yes," he smiled and reached into his pocket. "This is for you." It
was the traditional gift from a clutch sire to his mate at the
hatching and he'd done a little research of what Teseada liked. The
last one had been appreciated he was sure but it wasn't exactly her
style. He hoped he'd done better this time.

"That is beautiful," she said as she admired the pendant. Real craftsmanship
had clearly gone it to it. "Will you help me put it on?" She turned to him,
lifting her hair so he could fasten it. "I have something for you too," she
said.

He smiled and took it reaching around to fasten it around her neck.
Then he looked around and didn't see anything. "Where is it?"

A hand slowly drifted across her stomach protectively almost. "It's the kind
of present that takes some time to prepare, but one that will be loved when
you finally see it," she said somewhat cryptically. "You see, I'm , I'm
having a baby, our baby."

"Tes!" he couldn't help the exhultant and silly grin that spread
across his face. "Really?" He scooped her up and swung her in a circle
around him. "That's amazing. The very very best gift." He meant it
with all his heart. "How are you feeling," he said suddenly peering into
her face for any sign of illness.

"Good so far, a little more tired than normal, but the healers told me that
was to be expected."

He set her carefully on her feet and picked up her hand to kiss the
back of it. "Thank you," he gleamed at her. Of course the dragons
increased their humming and he was torn. "We have to go," he said and
still holding her hand turned to lead her to their seats for the
hatching.

And she let him lead her out there, as the candidates in their white robes
filed in, an egg on the outside began to rock as a crack formed in the
shell. It rocked harder for a moment or two, then a tiny, sky blue dragonet
emerged, creeling as he made his slow, ungainly way to a tall boy who's look
of joy suddenly rendered his homely face handsome. "Sorenith!" he called.

N'call clapped and cheered with the rest of the crowd as another and
another impression was made. The clutch wasn't the largest but it
_was_ respectable and Haloth's second! "Oh look at that," he cheered
as the first bronze finally appeared.

A brown and a green went to the boy and girl either side of the newest
bronzerider, followed by more egg hatching, and a few moments of finely
managed chaos as some lives were changed forever, and others bore looks of
disappointment.

The final egg, began a slow, yet steady, rocking motion as finally a pale
brown foreleg emerged. "Come on," Teseada whispered. "He has to do it
himself."

N'call felt almost as though he was holding his breath for this final
Impression. The boy took one step toward the hatchling and then seemed
to hesitate as though he didn't think he should. But a whirling eye
peeked from the egg and the nose butted again and again at the
resistant shard. "You can do it," he urged.

"Look," Teseada said softly as the hatchling pulled his foreleg back, then
struck hard with it to remove the shard of shell, even as the young boy, who
barely seemed to be of age to stand walked forward. "Drabith!" he called.
"Your T'lik is here."

"Is that the last," he asked Teseada. Haloth was feeling very proud of
all the pairs moving off the sands but he couldn't quite tell from
their position with all the new Weyrlings moving around.

"I think so," she replied. "If we give it a few more minutes, just to be
certain."

As the Sands cleared of their newly formed pairs N'call reached for
Teseada's hand again. "Shall we," he asked with a smile. Today really
was the best day. A newly hatched Weyrling class for Haloth and a new
Weyrbrat of his own on hits way. "Don't push yourself tonight," he
said, more determined than ever to take care of her. "I'll be watching
and if you get tired, I'll make sure you get away."

"I appreciate that," she said as she took his hand. "But, don't tell
absolutely everyone just yet, I need to tell Saibra and my family."

"I promise not to tell anyone until you give me leave," he smiled and
lifted her fingers to kiss. Then he pressed them warmly and led her
from the dais to cross the Sands. He gave a very deep bow to the
loveliest of Queens. "Thank you too Onnyth."
