Sweet Faranth, how utterly boring was this guy? Genna tried to focus on the old bronzerider's words, she really did, but he just droned on and on... What about had been lost on her for perhaps a quarter of the last candlemark, yet he did not seem to notice. And there wasn´t much chance of her getting a word in to ask for clarification either. Her eyes searched the crowd desperately for a reason to disentangle herself from the one-sided conversation, but she came up empty.
Off to one side a young harper was strumming his gitar. He finished up the slow ballad and stopped, catching her eye for a moment.
Catching the harper's eye, Genna felt a wave of relief. He looked friendly, surely he'd be willing to save her from death of boredom? As the old bronzerider was pointing out some of his fellow riders, Genna found the harper's eyes again and mouthed a quick 'help'. Hopefully he would know what she meant.
Oh dear, it looked as though blow hard old B'vall had yet another young girl trapped into one of his monologues. And from her knots, this could only be the newest goldrider for Dragonsfall. No wonder the old git was all but slobbering over her.
Suppressing a chuckle, Jayonne strolled over and stopped playing. "B'vall, Jaylene says she needs to see you real quick, something about the drills yesterday and if G'nellen had done his formation position right." That should get the old bronzerider, who loved nothing more than the idea of a young bronzerider just out of weyrlinghood in a position where he could get the poor child into trouble. He subtly winked at the girl as he waited for B'vall's reaction.
"Oh, of course!" B'vall turned to Genna and took her by the hand, making a small bow. "Please excuse me, kind lady, but duty calls!" As the man quickly stomped off, Genna breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank you for that!" she said turning to Jayonne, before realizing maybe not everyone thought B'vall to be as boring as she did. "Or did she really need him?" she added with a slight blush.
"I do wish I had my own dragon or at least a fire lizard, for times like this." The harper gave her a rueful smile. "I fear my poor sister is going to be completely confused when B'vall gets to her." He shrugged his shoulders and chuckled.
"Oh, that poor woman," Genna laughed with a hint of embarrassment. "I hope she'll be able to weather him?" She hadn't had much luck with that herself, but then again she was only just starting out attending hatchings and ceremonies. "I'm new to these formal events, can't say I was entirely prepared," she admitted.
"Trust me,_no_one is prepared for the boredom of one of B'vall's monologues." Jayonne snorted at the look on her face. The poor girl must have been trapped for a long time. "Jaylene can handle him. Plus my brother J'zen'll be with her and B'vall is Holder bred through and through. He won't last two moments around a male greenrider." He winked at her and chuckled.
"I should have brought my friend T'lat then," Genna smiled. Though T'lat was more cute than intimidating in his 'greenriderness', he probably would have done the trick just the same. "Well, thank you for saving me again. Can I get you a drink to show my appreciation?"
"A drink would be lovely, my throat is parched." Jayonne strung his gitar over his shoulder and smiled at her to lead the way. "How is your young queen?"
"She is faring well. Growing quicker than I can keep up with and with the goldest of gold personalities," Genna grinned. Lissath really did conform to quite a bit of the gold stereotypes. Then again she was unique in so many ways as well. "Not amused that I wanted to attend this hatching. But it's been such a lovely one, apart from my run in with B'vall there." She grinned as she handed the harper a drink.
"Ah, thank you." Jayonne lightly took the drink from the girl. His throat was so parched, it really did feel good going down. "Sadly, it seems that every Weyr here in the South has a B'vall or two--or twenty--on hand. Maybe one day the world will lose its use of such close minded types, eh?"
"I think most the world has lost it's use of them already. It's those people themselves that need their own chatter so much," Genna laughed. "But I'm sure I'll learn to weather it better as time progresses." She paused, looking around at the feasting crowd. "It's a nice party though, you play well."
"Ah, thank you very much." He grinned. "Do you play at all?"
"I used to sing a bit, for Harper lessons mostly," Genna said, remembering those lessons only vaguely now. It seemed so far away now. And it was, literally. Who would have thought she'd ever end up visiting a River Bluff Weyr hatching? "But that is ages ago, I'm not even sure I can carry a tune anymore."
"I'm sure you can. And if you can't, then that'd be a brilliant way to get rid of the likes of B'vall. Just start singing out of tune, I'm sure every boarish bronzerider within fifty paces would run for his life!" Jayonne had a twinkle in his eye that said he'd like to see an arrogant bronzerider being teased.
"Hmm, the bronzers at my own Weyr would probably sing my praise still, hoping to score some points before Lissath's first flight," Genna joked, though she felt a twinge of regret as she realized the joke probably held a kernel of truth.
Rather than laugh, the young harper looked at her with true empathy. "That must be hard, I'm sorry you don't get to just have a normal weyrlinghood like all the other weyrlings do."
"I got Lissath," Genna smiled. "She's worth all the hassle in a heartbeat. I guess it might get better as I learn to read them better."
"This is true." A lively reel started up. Jayonne extended his hand. "Care to dance?"
"Certainly!" Genna smiled wided and took his hand, ready to do some dancing and forget all about bronzeriders and the sticks up their backsides.
