For S'rak, unpacking was somewhat of a new thing. He'd moved into his weyr at Far Island ten turns ago when he had completed weyrling training, but he had never felt the need to move again until his transfer to Dragonsfall. He hadn't taken many of his possessions with him, a few personal items like his best gather clothes and a model ship given to him by his daughter, but he had spoken to the Headwoman when he was assigned a new weyr and there was now several stacks of items littering his living area. He had waved off the drudge who had been assigned to help him with his new things, he wasn't quite sure where he wanted everything yet. He was just getting ready to move the pile of linens and furs over to the bed when he heard a knock at the door. "Come in." "I thought I would see how you're settling in, S'rak," U'kaiah said as he peeked his head through the door.
"Ahh, U'kaiah, come in, come in," he motioned for his new wingleader to enter, "As you can see, your headwoman has been overly kind in furnishing my weyr."
"Well, someone needs to be using the furniture," he smiled.
S'rak looked around briefly before apologizing, "I'd offer you a drink, but I'm not sure if I have any cups yet..."
"That's quite all right," U'kaiah said with a dismissive wave. "We don't need drinks to talk."
He grinned and moved a few things off the couch against the wall. "If you'll help me move this couch over towards the fire, I can at least offer you a seat!" "Well, all right. I suppose I can do that," the Wingleader nodded and grabbed the end of the sofa.
Seeing that the couch was in it's place, S'rak indicated for U'kaiah to have a seat. "Now that that's taken care of... was there a purpose to your visit, or just being friendly?"
"I just wanted to check to see how you were settling into your new home," the wingleader replied as he sank onto the couch.
"Oh, well, I appreciate that U'kaiah, I really do." he said with a smile, "It's been somewhat overwhelming coming here after living my whole life at Far Island." "I can only imagine. I have lived my whole life here. Well, as long as I can remember at least."
S'rak nodded, "I'm not regretting my decision though, it was time for a change." His old weyr and Far Island itself had held too many memories of his beloved weyrmate. Her death had changed how he saw his old home and he truly hoped starting over at Dragonsfall would help him get over his loss. "I've heard change is good," U'kaiah nodded. "But I still can't seem to leave."
"If you're happy here, then why would you?" "Exactly." And he was happy there. He had his share of troubles recently, but he'd had hard losses before. Trae and Jaela were just the two hardest so far. Hopefully, it couldn't get any harder than it had been. Things could only improve... "Is it prying too much to ask why _you_ decided to come? I take it you were not happy where you were?"
A few months ago it would have been prying, but it was getting easier to talk about now. "I was happy for a very long time. I had a splendid wing under my command and a beautiful weyrmate to come home to every night. Then my Torinica died in threadfall. I figured it was just time to start over. The closest thing I have to family is here at Dragonsfall already, so when your wingsecond position came open I took it as my chance."
"Well, M'wyn was a hard loss," U'kaiah said thoughtfully. His wing had lost way too many leaders in the last turn. "Luckily they say Twornoth's wing will heal with time. But it may never be good enough to fight Thread again."
"Let's just hope for the best, we need all our riders in the sky." he replied evenly. Thread injuries were still somewhat of a touchy subject after Torinica, but he tried not to let them bother him. The wingleader nodded. "Yes, we do. But I think you will be a great asset to the wing. Especially with your leadership experience."
"Well thank you, I hope so." S'rak said inclining his head slightly, then added, "But don't think I'll be trying to usurp your authority in any way. Jenya told me what a excellent wingleader you were when she transferred to Far Island. It was actually one of the things that made me want to apply for your second position."
"Don't worry," U'kaiah chuckled, "I have no fear that you would usurp my power. I have earned everything I have got. It would take a lot for me to lose it."
S'rak smiled. He liked a man who was confident in his abilities and position. "Good, now how about you tell me a bit about the other members of your wing."
