Reeva rarely dreaded patients. She rarely looked forward to them
either. When someone was in her office, she was about business, not
whether or not she liked dealing with the people.
But this one worried her, and while it didn't show, she wasn't afraid
to admit it, either.
Her apprentice had orders to show Bahji straight through, however, so
she really needed to stop standing up and sitting down again and
simply concentrate.
Bahji's chin was lifted as she was led to the Healer's office, her
spine straight. She hadn't been to see Reeva, or spoken to her since
the incident, though it hadn't been the woman's fault in the
slightest. But now, Bahji was afraid of what Reeva would say. It
wasn't noticeable to many, but her waistline had thickened and a
slight bulge was hidden under her clothing. "Good morning, Reeva."
"Good Morning Bahji. I believe you asked to see a healer?"
The journeyman on duty had been quick to enlist a Master for this one.
He heart had sunk when she saw why
"Yes, but I wasn't expecting to be directed to you. Perhaps I should
have." She murmured the last to herself. Using her hands, she found
her way to a seat. "I was coming in for a checkup."
Reeva was generally mild with her patients- but sometimes, just
sometimes, they managed to rub her the wrong way, and something in
Bahji's words did just that. Reeva's reply was quiet and respectful,
but firm. She would not treat rebellious patients. They took too much
out of her herself.
"Yes, Bahji, you should have. Because you are pregnant- against healer
advice- and you wish to continue your quest to be a mother *right
now*- against healer advice. And I realize that your bronzerider does
not like me, and I have no idea if you agree with him, but I am your
best chance of cheating the odds right now because this is what I
specialize in, after my main field. And my colleagues realize this
also. Which is why you are here."
The very mild rebuke was all she would ever get on the subject from Reeva.
Bahji sat and sighed softly. "I was not trying to become pregnant,
Reeva. I took the teas, so I don't know if I perhaps missed a day.
It's not a quest, it was unplanned." She sat straighter. "I don't
agree with K'lvin, actually. I would rather have you oversee this
pregnancy, but I didn't know if you would considering what happened
before." The last was softly pained. "I kept it to myself because I
couldn't bear doing that again. I'm willing to do what you prescribe,
whatever it takes."
"Of course I will work with you, Bahji. Of course. That will never be
in question."
She paused a moment, attempting to be tactful, then decided she was
too old to start being so now.
"On the matter of K'lvin.. is he aware? More to the point, do you trust him."
Reeva personally would never think well of the man. No after what he
had done. But it wasn't her decision to make.
"He's aware." Bahji spoke softly He was now at any rate. "He's not
going to do anything, especially not after last time." She laid her
hand on her abdomen. "And it's past time to try to go /between/ with
the child." She had made certain of that.
Reeva smiled softly. She admired stubborn personalities, even whilst
they vexed her.
"Of course it is. I'll need to give you an examination, although so
far you've been looking ok."
She indicated the table. While running through the basic examination,
Reeva kept talking.
"Tell me, Bahji, do you have any noticeable issues when you void? Or have sex?"
Settling back on the table, Bahji held still while Reeva examined her.
"No. No issues at all. I was tired for a good while at first, but it
seems to have passed. Now I'm eating a bit more and everything seems
okay."
" A sentiment I can only echo. For the moment, you're in good health.
I'd still like to schedule some time together, when it's convenient,
as there's some little things I'd like to go over with you, and some
tweaks we'll have to make, but that's about it."
"What sort of tweaks?" She turned her head in Reeva's direction. "My
time is pretty free, so anytime is convenient."
Reeva chuckled.
"Oh. Food, diet, what you do. How you sleep.... I'm not one who
usually expects expectant mothers to sit in a corner and not breathe
til the baby is born, but for you I will make an exception!"
"Okay." Her lips lifted slightly. "I'll be sure I follow your suggestions."
Reeva smiled just a little disconcertingly. "Oh yes, you will."
