It was time to teach the junior weyrlings about the roles of each
dragon color during Threadfall. He and Sh'del could cover blue and
brown dragons, but that meant they needed someone for green, bronze,
and gold. (Even though they didn't have a gold in this clutch, it was
important for the others to know their role.) L'pin had an idea for
which bronzerider to ask for the job, too. Why not honor the clutch
sire?
He waited in the Dining Cavern until he spotted J'nus, then headed in
the bronzerider's direction. "May I speak with you a moment?"
"Sure." The bronzerider had a small plate of fruit and cheese in one
hand and a tall
glass of juice in the other. A rather battered looking book was tucked
into one of
his pockets. "I was just going to have lunch. Do you mind joining me?"
"Not at all," L'pin said. He gestured at the book, archivists' curiosity
overriding social tact. "What do you have?"
J'nus glanced down at the book in his pocket before moving toward a
table. "Oh. A history of Thayan Peak. It stops about two hundred turns
before the
earthquake. It's dry, but a thorough read." He'd found it in the archives
and Kapera had let him borrow it.
"Sounds interesting. There's a difference between Weyrs that have history
and ones that don't. I've lived in a few that were newly-opened and there
was a faint sense of something missing."
The bronzerider shrugged as he slid into a seat and placed his plate
and glass on
the table in front of him. "I feel the same. New places are nice
enough, but they
don't have the same... presence."
L'pin nodded. He took a seat himself so he wasn't just standing around
awkwardly. "Before here, where were you?"
"Dragonsfall Weyr. You?"
"The reopened Rising Moons. I miss all the trees and the cooler
climate," he said with feeling.
J'nus sighed. "I Impressed at a tropical Weyr and apparently forgot
what it was like. Silly me."
"At least there's pretty people with their clothes off to look at, if
that's your kind of thing," L'pin joked.
The bronzerider smiled. It had been-- enough so that he'd had to
leave. "And here I am back in the tropics. What can I do for you,
L'pin?"
Right, the work question. "It's time to give the weyrlings the
Threadfall lectures that have color-specific information. You know,
this is what blues take care of. Since you're the clutch sire, I was
hoping that you'd be willing to teach the lecture on bronzes."
J'nus blinked. "Of course." There was no way he could refuse--
especially not when the clutch was Kopth's. For once he was glad of
his experience as Wingleader at Dragonsfall. He'd be able to draw on
his own experience to share with the weyrlings, rather than relying on
observation and second hand knowledge. "When?"
"Next sevenday. Anytime between days 8 and 13. It's the 10th
candlemark class," L'pin said helpfully.
"Sure. Let me check the Wing schedule, but I think I can squeeze a
talk in without missing anything." Not that N'vanik would particularly
mind, but J'nus didn't like bending the rules.
"Thanks for agreeing. I think the bronzes would really appreciate
hearing you speak."
The bronzerider shrugged and hoped L'pin was right. "They seem like a
good class."
"I think that about every class. Each one has a couple members who are
special standouts. I think P'ton'll be one for this class. Hard to
believe who he's related to, sometimes," the bluerider mused.
"P'ton and R'taran are different, but R'taran's a good rider. I like him,"
J'nus
replied. R'taran worked hard, flew well under orders, and had just won a
goldflight.
The bronzerider felt compelled to defend him, even though it was obvious
L'pin
hadn't meant his words as a slight but rather as a comparison between the
attitudes
of the two brothers. "But he and P'ton are like day and night."
"P'ton reminds me a little of a clutchmate of mine
I'm interested in
seeing how
long he keeps the confidence up, and if he'll be able to inspire those
under his
lead as well as he can win the girls," L'pin said with a chuckle. "I know
R'taran's
views aren't always popular. I don't think Sh'del likes him much.
But I think sometimes the weyrbred don't value the hold- and hallbred
ways. They see
difference to be overcome and not celebrated."
J'nus nodded. "True. But I think that's mainly because everyone gets so
hung up on
sex, monogamy and dragons. Other Hold and Hall values I think bolster ours
at the
Weyr-- the Weyrbred tend to be more focused on themselves. I find the Hold
and
Hallbred are often more community minded." He shrugged. "And then there's me.
Traders don't fit so well anywhere."
"Are Traders community-minded, or self-minded?" L'pin asked.
"Loyal to family and the freedom to go and do whatever we wanted. At
least, that was
mine." J'nus paused to pick up a bit of cheese. "I can't speak for the
others."
"Sounds like an interesting lifestyle. I only know about it through bad
tales."
The bronzerider nodded. "Sounds about right."
"If I ever get a trader candidate in, I might ask you for advice. If
that's alright."
"Sure. Any time." It was an easy promise to make. There weren't many
Traders who got
Searched-- although there was that girl who Impressed gold at River Bluff.
She'd be
a breath of fresh air at the Weyr. "I'll let you know what my Wing
schedule looks
like and when I can come by to talk to the weyrlings."
"Thank you very much. I should leave you to your meal," L'pin said.
