Milga was slowly walking back to the Hall from the Weyr. She had been there
for her sessions with the mindhealer. This time she was been told that she
didn't have to come back. She was well recovered from her nightly assault.
She was not going to have any permanent trauma. And if she was now bit
cautious around boys, it wasn't necessarily a bad thing. That left Milga
both relieved and bit sad. She had actually liked the healer and their
talks, she was going to miss her. She had helped her in so many ways. They
had talked about many things, including Milga's childhood in a remote
island hold. She had taught Milga to understand herself better.
"So, what's been doing in the Weyr, Milga? Spreading your legs for the
dragonriders?" A malicious voice followed by nasty snicker interrupted her
thoughts. Two boys blocked her way.
Milga stopped and sighed. Those two again. They had been picking on her
since the day she arrived to the hall. They were both few turns older than
her and senior apprentices now. "You two again?" she asked. She was so
tired of them. "Don't you have anything better to do?" Why couldn't they
just leave her alone. She tried to ignore them as much as possible. She
crossed her arms under breasts. That she had breasts now was confusing.
They were a hindrance and attracted attention.
"No. I would leave you alone if you spread your legs for me too," the worst
one of the pair leaned towards her. She could smell his breath and it
wasn't exactly pleasant smell.
"Ugh. Do you ever brush your teeth?" she asked with disgust and took step
backwards.
That just infuriated him more. His lackey sniggered again and got a vicious
glance from his friend.
"How dare you criticize me, you fish-hauler's brat?" he said angrily and
grabbed Milga's arm.
"Let go of me! Or I'll make you pee blood for a sevenday," Milga
threatened. That's how they had caught her assailant. He had been forced to
seek out healer's help when he started to urinate blood. Milga's kick had
damaged something inside him. She was worried though. There was two of
them. But this was public place and in a middle of the day. Certainly they
wouldn't dare to do anything more than try to intimidate her?
"Oh, what have we here? Such a brave heroes, harassing a little girl?" a
voice interrupted the bully before he could reply to Milga's threat. When
he turned to look who it was, Milga pulled her arm free.
They saw a young man, not much bigger than Milga, with black, wild hair,
same brown eyes like Milga's and notable birthmark on his cheek. He was
also wearing seacrafter's knots. "Hey, Millie, long time no see. You're
grown up," he had big, easy smile. "And you're grown up _pretty_," he added
with admiring look.
There was only one person who had ever called her anything but Milga and
she had not seen him in many turns. Not that she could forget that
birthmark. "Cousin Feydal? What brings you here?"
"I'm on a ship assignment and our ship's stopped here for resupply and
repairs. I knew you are now apprentice dolphineer, so I asked around and I
was told I can find you here," Feydal replied, words just spilling out of
his mouth. "You two slimebugs, scamper off, I need to catch up with my
cousin," he dismissed the two other boys with casual indifference. He
didn't look dangerous but there was confidence in him that discouraged the
bullies from continuing.
He had Milga at the crook of his arm and he was pulling her away before the
dazed bullies could react. He was chatting all the time. By the time it
took them to reach the main entrance to Dolphin Hall, he had told her
everything he had done during past five Turns, which is how long it had
been since they last saw each other.
"So I have new little sister and they named her Mildri. It kind resembles
your name, Milga. I guess they were running out of syllables."
"Feydal," Milga interrupted him. "You haven't changed a one bit. You still
talk too much."
For some reason that made Feydal burst into peals of laughter.
