N'call

"Sir?" N'call knocked on the Weyrleaders door. "I have the schedule
you wanted me to draw up." He'd worked for hours trying with all his
energy to get the balance right the way G'nir had showed him. But he
still felt as if he was missing something.

"N'call," G'nir nodded a greeting. "Let's see how you did it."

He stepped forward and slid the hide in front of the Weyrleader.

G'nir rolled up a large threadfall chart and moved it out of the way.
"So, what kind of schedule you did make for our wingriders?"

"This is for the extra flaming drills for the third and ninth. They
missed the target and you'd wanted them to get in some additional
practices." He knew he'd remembered it correctly he just wasn't sure
of the correct placement in each of the sixes.

"Mmh, yes, some of them were bit sloppy," G'nir agreed. "It's all too
easy to hit a wingmate if your aim is not accurate." He pulled
N'call's hide closer and started to inspect it.

N'call resisted the urge to walk around the desk and peer over the
Weyrleader's shoulder as he checked his work. So, he waited, maybe
not patiently but he waited with what he hoped appeared to be
patience.

"I see you've redone our nines," G'nir noted with a faint smile.
"These two," he tapped two names in the list, "should never be in same
group. They've like oil and water."

"Oh," N'call leaned over the page, "What if I switched her with him,"
he said pointing to two riders.

"Works," G'nir replied. "Now, these two are starting to like each
other too much. If it keeps up, they need to be separated to different
wings. Knowing things like that is part of being a leader," G'nir
taught.

That interested him. "You mean you watch people to see who's hooking
up?" Not that it particularly interested him personally as much as he
wondered how the Weyrleader came by the information.

"Yes. Now of course, I can't watch them all, since I have plenty of
other duties, so that's why I have Rorela," G'nir replied.

"Oh interesting," He hadn't been aware that would be one of the
Wingthird's duties. He had wondered at some of the questions directed
at him from time to time. Mostly about Ninaine. "Would you want me to
do that too sir? Keep my ear open?"

"Yes, always keep your ears and eyes open," G'nir replied. "Being a
leader includes unexpected duties. For example, in a Hold, my mother
would be keeping her eyes and ears open, and report to her husband
anything she judged he needed to know."

He nodded his understanding. Finally things began to click for him and
the possibilities of what he'd learned in the special bronzrider
training he'd received as a weyrling. He was gaining a hunger to learn
more and the knowledge that he could and would lead at some point.
"Thank you for teaching me sir," he said. "Is there anything else I
can help you with?"

"After you've corrected that, there's some reports to be archived,"
G'nir replied, his lips doing a little twist upwards.

N'call didn't quite snort but he realized when you were training you
had to do things that weren't your favorite just to learn. His own
rueful smile answered the Weyrleaders. "Yes sir."
