Description: Alfginna has a job interview with Yriadha
Location: Sunstone Seahold
Date: month 13, day 11 of Turn 7
Alfginna waited outside the Headwoman's office for her turn. She had
applied for a job in Sunstone and the Headwoman was going to interview
her. During her stay in River Bluff Weyr, Alfginna had sewn herself a
new dress, made of light cotton instead of wool. It was still very
prudent dress, covering her from neck to ankles.
Yriadha appeared at the office door, ushering a young woman out
without a smile. Her face betrayed nothing of her thoughts of the
applicant, but the young woman looked hopeful, but nervous. Yriadha
turned dark eyes to Alfginna and beckoned with a slim hand. "Come in
to my office, please."
"Yes, ma'm," Alfginna was nothing but obedient. Her mother had made
sure she was always obedient.
"Have a seat. " Yriadha settled herself at the desk and folded her
hands in front of her. "And your name is..." She checked her hides.
"Alfginna, correct?"
"Yes, from Iron Lake hold," Alfginna replied meekly when she took the
seat. She folded her hands to her lap.
Yriadha looked squarely at her, her expression firm and her eyes
unwavering. "What makes you think you can succeed in being my
assistant?"
"I've been my mother's assitant for a long time, she was de facto
Headwoman of our hold," Alfginna managed to squeak out. Couldn't the
headwoman smile, just a little bit? She was scaring Alfginna.
"Hmm." Yriadha tapped a long slender finger on her mouth. "What did
you do especially well? Why should I pick you over the other women who
want the position?" The meek young woman could possibly be moldable,
but she didn't want her assistant not to be able to think for herself
on occasion.
"Well, actually I'm at my best when I'm making clothes. I can spin
fleece to yarn, weave it to a cloth and sew it to clothes," Alfginna
was on firmer ground with this, then she realized that wasn't what
headwomen did. "I'm good at record keeping too," she added hastily.
Yriadha looked over the hides on her desk about Alfginna and then back
up at her. "If you're best at making clothes and that's where your
skills are, why do you want to move away from that?"
"I just want to find a job where I can support myself since I've been
unable to find a husband," Alfginna seemed to shrink smaller in her chair.
A meek assistant wouldn't ask too many questions, but would the girl
be able to think for herself when it was needed? Yriadha considered
her. "I'm looking for someone who will do what they are told but still
be able to be self sufficient and motivated. How do I know that you
could do that? You seem..." She paused and her gaze flicked over the
young girl. "...timid."
"It's a problem I've been working on," Alfginna's voice was barely
audible. The Headwoman really, really reminded her of her mother.
Yriadha eyed the girl coolly. "Well, until it is worked on, I'm afraid
I can't use you as an assistant." Her voice was brisk. "If you are
best at making clothing, I can place you with a seamstress I know
well. Perhaps you can find a place with her."
"Not needed, headwoman. I return to River Bluff Weyr, I can work with
the weavers there," Alfginna managed to reply. She just wanted out of that office as fast as possible.
"Very well." Yriadha's voice remained crisp as she rose and gestured
to her door. "I wish you luck then, Alfginna."
"Thank you. Thank you for your time," Alfginna murmured. She was ready
to bolt out of the office.
