N'vanik

"It's me, Olwinna," Olwinna said when she knocked the Weyrleader's
office door, just in case he didn't know who she was. Although they
had known each other since he became the Weyrleader. "I have some
infirmary reports for you," she added cheerfully. "Do you want to go
thru them with me or shall I just dropp them on your desk and call my
shift done early?"

"Anything important I should know about?" he asked, looking up from his hides.

"T'kes, the blurider who lost his weyrmate month ago," Olwinna
replied, her expression turning into serious, professional one. She
walked into the office and put the pile she was carrying on N'vanik's
desk. She took herself a chair without being asked.

He lifted the top sheet and frowned. "So he's not doing well."

"Well, yes and now. At least he's not going on about following him to
/between/ any longer. Instead he just sits there and stares the wall
whole day, mulling his death over in his mind. I recommend he'll take
part in drills again, especially in those that leave the rider
physically exhausted. And if couple friendly wingmates would pull him
to the dining cavern after the drill and make sure he eats something.
Getting him drunk and crying against someone's shoulder wouldn't be
bad either," Olwinna replied.

"I'll get some people to keep an eye on him, and I'll give him
exercises to do as well as drills." Shards, he couldn't imagine what a
mess he'd be if he lost Tal.

"Good," Olwinna smiled. "He just need remember that life goes on."

"We all need to remember that sometimes." Being in a Pass meant they
were surrounded by death.

"Yes," Olwinna had experienced her own share of grief and losses. "How
is Talryne doing? I haven's seen her awhile so I take that as a good
sign," she inquired.

"She's doing good." Tal still had bad days, but they came less and
less often. "I've been sort of... thinking about asking if she'd like
to come to a hatching. Not just the feast." He didn't want to push her
too much, but he would love to sit with her during the event. He felt
such a pang seeing Cyradis and K'deren holding hands and smiling.

"It would be good if she could come to watch Impression but do not
force or press her. If the thought is uncomfortable to her, then she's
not ready for it," Olwinna adviced.

"Yeah. Sometimes I'm still worried she says yes to things just to make
me happy." Although she was much better than she used to be at saying
no.

Olwinna nodded. "Then you just have to try to read her body. Easier
said than done, I know, but body never lies. Voice and face can lie
but not your body."

"If I do ask, it'll be someone else's Hatching, not one of mine. So
she feels less pressure. Meledei's or Kapera's." Then if she did say
yes and couldn't handle it he could take back to their weyr.

"Yes, that would be best. Then she doesn't have to wonder what did you
do with the Gold's rider during the Flight. Not to mention, you won't
have the hosting duties and can pay more attention to her," Olwinna
replied.

"Yeah, I was thinking it would be easier to make a retreat, if she
needed to." Even if she didn't say anything, N'vanik would be able to
read the signs.

Olwinna nodded. "If you want me to, I can join you."

"No thanks. It might put more pressure on her or give her the wrong
idea. I appreciate the offer, though." N'vanik used to go out of his
way to avoid mindhealers, but they'd done so much good for Tal and
Olwinna in particular was very nice. "What about you? Anything
interesting going on?

"Me? You people keep me too busy," Olwinna said with too innocent expression.

"No fun at all?" he teased.

Olwinna straightened all her five feet and intoned with her most
somber voice: "I always have fun."

N'vanik chuckled. "I can see that."

"Next time Loseth loses a Flight and you snatch me afterwards, I can
prove it," Olwinna promised.

"Are you flirting with the Weyrleader, journeywoman?" His eyes danced
with mischief.

"I'm always flirting with everyone, well, not with patients. At least
not that much," Olwinna replied.

N'vanik nodded. "Professional standards, and all that." One of the
things he worried about most when moving here was having to find Tal a
new mindhealer. Olwinna seemed to be good for her and that was a huge
relief.

"I do take my craft very seriously. Rest of my life, not so," Olwinna replied.

"Exactly as it should be."
