Description: A very special first for Genna and Lissath.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 1, day 7 of Turn 8
It was only the gentlest of nudges that woke Genna from her slumber. At
first she didn't even realize what it had been that had woken her up. Then
Lissath gently nudged her again. }: It is time. :{ The gold almost
whispered into her Lifemate's mind. Genna shot upright at once, ready to go
into full action mode. **Alright, I'm coming! If you'll call Kenirath, then
I'll –**
Lissath cut across Genna's frantic monologue before it had even truly
begun. }: I won't call anyone and neither will you. This is a special time
for just the two of us. :{
Genna frowned and flopped back down on her bed in wonder for a moment.
**No, Lissath, we need people there. What if something goes wrong?**
}:Nothing will go wrong. But if it does, _then_ you can call someone.:{
Never before had Genna felt such gentle determination in her young gold.
Before when they had disagreed, Lissath had always been quite fierce in
defending her point of view. The calm matter-of-fact tone in her voice put
Genna at ease. Lissath knew what she was doing.
Getting up from her bed again, she picked up the basket she'd had made
ready for her just in case. Now she understood why Lissath had insisted on
moving to the temporary weyr in advance and keeping food and blankets ready.
**Are you out on the sands yet?**
}: Of course I am, I'm not going have my clutch in our weyr. :{
Clutch! The word rang through Genna's mind as she hurried into the hatching
cavern with just the one glowbasket to light her way through the pitch
black night. Lissath was going to lay her first clutch tonight! Just like
Lissath, too, such peculiar timing. But it would indeed be a nice surprise
for the Weyr to wake up to.
When she got to the cavern, Genna the basket with food and blankets aside
for the moment and went straight for her gold, nestling into her snugly.
Maybe this would be better just the two of them.
Time seemed to pass ever so slowly as Lissath began to produce her first
egg. About three times Genna had been about to run off and find a
dragonhealer, but just as many times Lissath convinced her everything was
going exactly as planned. And indeed, finally, the first egg appeared. As
Lissath lovingly pooled the sand around it for safekeeping, Genna felt
tears stinging in her eyes. She had a feeling there would be a lot more
tears to come that night, before it was all over.
The second egg came sooner that the first and even quicker a third
followed. As they were all nicely sized and shaped, Genna slowly began to
calm down some. After the fourth, Lissath gently informed her rider that
she needed some rest and that Genna had better get a bite to eat before
they continued. Though she was hardly hungry at all, Genna decided to obey
her Lifemate's wishes, knowing from all the stories they could very well be
in there for a very long time still.
After a short break, Lissath started pushing again on her sixth and seventh
egg. }: Look at this one, this is surely a bronze, I can tell. :{ Lissath
said smugly, as she tucked in the egg with care. Though Genna knew there
were no such guarantees, she agreed anyway, it really looked like it could
be a bronze.
Though it was still the dead of night and time crept on ever so slowly,
Genna reveled in this intense union with her Lifemate. It might not be as
direct a coupling as during the Flight, but she could certainly see why
Lissath had been so intent on them to do it together. With no one around to
distract her for even the slightest of moment, she could revel in the love
she shared with her Lifemate and greet each new egg with the same amount of
love as Lissath had for them. It was as if it were her very own children in
there, now waiting for the day they could break their shell. Every so
often, Genna would feel tears of joy roll down her cheek as the pair –
dragon and rider – welcomed the new life in silent reverence.
Finally, as the first light of day began to seep in to the Hatching Cavern,
Lissath rumbled in contentment and lay down in earnest. }: That was it
mine, that is all of them. :{ she told Genna with the same matter-of-fact
tone of voice of earlier. }: I'll have some rest now. When I wake up, we'll
tell the Weyr. :{
As Lissath settled in for a nap, Genna surveyed the clutch one last time to
make sure. Twenty-five fine and healthy looking eggs! They had done it! No
one would be able to say she had messed up this one. A fine flight and now
a fine clutch. Surely, they would be fine hatchlings too. Some of Lissath
self-confidence about the clutch must finally be rubbing of on her, Genna
figured as she sat back on her blanket. And as soon as Lissath woke up,
they would tell the Weyr what they had done.
