Babies come into the world in the usual way and in their own time.
Ciara knew this yet this one was making her tired and cranky. He or
she was already late and it didn't matter now much walking she did it
didn't seem to want to budge.

With Kes up conducting drills and the kids with the harpers she
decided to try and take a little nap. Sometime later she woke suddenly
to a huge contraction and a puddle of ruptured fluids messing the
furs.

Ellianith's head poked in and she hummed with whirling eyes but she
could barely focus enough to make her need felt. **Nikornath's** she
simply radiated need.

Storm warbled suddenly when Drumilla was walking past the Weyr
entrances on her way to lower caverns. The Weyrleader's ledge was very
close to it.

Ciara couldn't help the scream that ripped from her throat as the
contraction hit its peak and her body convulsed with the need to push
the child from her body. This wasn't right "too fast," she gasped to
no one there.

Drumilla heard the scream and her healer's instincts woke up. She ran to
find out it's source. "Is somethng wrong?" she called out.

As drills came to an end, and the wing landed, that was the time that
Nikornath finally managed to catch the the sense of what was going on, and
pass it to his rider. K'sedel immediately handed things over to K'reyel and
after grabbing a couple of candidates to bathe and oil his bronze. He began
to jog back to his weyr.

"The baby," Ciara gasped. "It's coming now." Fear filled her eyes as
she grasped the shred of hope the you woman offered. Then she doubled
over with another contraction.

"Let me have look. You're in luck, I'm a healer," Dru replied. She gave her
an encouraging smile. She was still junior journeywoman though. "Oh dear,
I've heard of surge births but..." Dru said when she had pulled Ciara's
skirts up to her waist. "Just push and I catch," nothing else she could do,
since the top of the head was already out. She didn't even have time to wash
her hands. She positioned herself to help the baby out.

Ciara nodded and with the next contraction she pushed as hard as she
could. She finished with a sense of relief as the pressure eased and a baby
slithered free of her body into Drumilla's hands. She couldn't help the
laugh that escaped when she heard the baby wail.

"There you are, in hurry to get out", Dru cooed and quickly cleaned the
baby's face, with her tunic. "Do you have a towel or blanket?" she asked,
"and I need something like scissors or knife to cut the cord."

That was the point at which K'sedel arrived. It took a moment to take in the
scene before him. "Ciara?" he said, before realizing that a) the baby had
arrived and b) he really had just heard the healer, or at least the woman
with healer's knots ask for a knife. "Here," he said pulling out his belt
knife, "It's clean."

"Thank you, sir," Dru replied with a glance and smile towards the
Weyrleader. "Congratulations, you have a son," she informed them,
while she separated him from his mother.

"Blankets are right there," Ciara said pointing to where they were
stacked neatly next to the cradle. She held her hand out to the
Weyrleader. "Sorry I tried to wait for you. It was just so fast!"

K'sedel took her hand. "I think someone was too eager to meet us."

Drumilla found the blanket and wrapped the baby up. Then she gave it
to his parents. "You might want to go to bed, Ciara, there's still the
afterbirths," Drumilla reminded. She felt proud and happy. Her first
solo delivery and she wasn't even on duty.

Ciara took the little guy and nodded at the healer. "Sorry I made such
a mess of the furs. It just happened so fast." She looked up at her
weyrmate "a little too eager," she chuckled. She lay back against the
pillows so Drumilla could handle the clean up.

"He's certainly given us a surprise today." K'sedel reached out gently to
touch a tiny hand that broken free from the wrapping.

Drumilla was happy for them, yet she felt a touch of sadness. Would hers had
been boy or girl. She would never know. She busied herself with the after
delivery, pushing all the regrets of past mistakes away from her mind.

Ciara grinned up at K'sedel. "How do you like Keseran for a name?"

"Keseran," K'sedel said it slowly and carefully, almost trying it out.
"Keseran," he repeated more confidently. "I like it, and I think it suits
him."

"Keseran," she whispered to her son, "How would you like to meet your
father," she held him up for K'sedel to hold despite the grime of
drills. Children could be washed after all.

"Hello there," K'sedel said as he cradled the baby gently. "Nice to meet you
at long last."
