Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 10, day 22 of Turn 3
"Hi, Sherevair," Kustaava greeted demuredly when they all spilled out from the candidate lesson. "Really interesting these classes or what?" "Perhaps the first two or three times," Sherevair laughted. "Now I think I could teach the class."
"You've been a candidate for longer time then?" Kustaava asked. "Three turns at least," he nodded.
"I've been here a barely over a month. How about a walk?" she said and asked shyly. "I feel I like I could use some fresh air and stretching out my legs after all these classes." "Oh... Yeah, that sounds like a nice yeah," nodded as he stretched his arms high above his head. "Stretching sounds like a good plan."
"Walk with me then?" Ava asked with a small, mysterious smile on her face. "Sure," he said as he fell into step with her.
"Have you ever been inlands from here? What's there? I've only been in the weyr itself or along the beach." Ava let her hand brush against his. A flash of annoyance crossed over her face. Didn't he get the signal and hold her hand or was he just dense? "A lot of trees," he said with a shrug. "Not much to really _see_ really unless you like plants."
"What's wrong with plants? I wouldn't mind picking some pretty flowers." "Well, yeah, pretty flowers are all right," Sherevair nodded. They passed the weyrling barracks. Kustaava watched them thougthtfully.
"Have you ever wondered why they built the weyrling barracks so close to the dragon infirmary? To remind the weyrlings of the dangers or didn't they just have room elsewhere?" "So we'd be closer to muck all the waste of the dragons who can't fly /between/ to relieve themselves," he said as he wrinkled his nose. "You don't appreciate just how big a herdbeast is until you clean up after a dragon."
Ava laughed so much, that she stumbled and had to grap Sherevair's arm. He caught her just in time before she stumbled into the sand, chuckling too. "Come on, Ava, you've cleaned it before too. Don't you agree?"
"Yes, I agree. But the thought is still funny," Ava replied her eyes twinkling with laughter. She didn't let go of the boy's arm. "And the smell," he said with a dramatic shudder. "It brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it."
"You're talking to a farm girl. We have some rather ripe smells too. Like the stuff they spread to the fields every spring." "And I'm a herdcrafter. I'm the one _shoveling_ the stuff they spread on the fields every day!"
"It's a dirty job but someone has to do it," Kustaava said and giggled again.
"Yeah, but why does it have to be _us_?" he asked with a pathetic pout.
"I don't know. You know, you're quite funny." "Why thank you. I live to entertain," he said with a saucy grin, which quickly deteriorated into an authentic one.
Ava laughed again and patted his arm fondly. "So how do you like our beautiful Weyr?" he asked as they turned off onto a path that went deeper into the trees.
"I love it. I want to live here for the rest of my life," the girl answered. The stopped at a blooming bush, and she picked up few flowers. She put one behind her ear and tugged another one to Sharevair's button hole. "Pretty," he said with a broad grin. He had always liked flowers. "Can you make one of those flower necklaces?"
"Not from these ones. I need the long stemmed flowers for it," Ava replied, playing with the flowers in her hand. "Well, we should look for some then," he said grabbing her hand briefly, pulling her farther into the woods.
Kustaava followed him eagerly. So far she had tried haystack and beach. Would today be turn for a meadow? "I think I hear the river up ahead. Do you think there would be flowers along there?"
"There usually are. Moisture you know." "Well then, our prospects are looking promising!" he cried as he pulled her along after him, following the sound of rushing water.
"Not so fast! You have longer legs than I," the girl cried. She had troubles keeping up with him.
Sherevair obediantly slowed down. "All right, all right," he laughed, turning and watching backwards a few steps so he could wrinkle his nose teasingly at her.
Kustaava wrinkled her nose back, stuck out her tongue and sped past him in full run. "Last one at the river is a tunnelsnake!" "Hey, wait a second now," he laughed as he chased after her, almost catching up to her at the end, but arriving out of breath just a heartbeat behind. "What was that... about long... legs?" he asked breathlessly.
"Fooled you, didn't I," Kustaava grinned, delighted by her own prank. She sat down on the grass and patted the ground next to her invitingly. He flopped down on it, more winded than he would have thought he'd be. "I guess you did. You're such a girl, Ava. Always giving the boys a hard time."
"But it's so fun. This is fun too," Kustaava said and taking his head to her hands, kissed him. Sherevair pulled back slightly, his eyes wide. "Ava, what are you doing?"
"Well, what do you think it was?" Ava asked with a raised eyebrown. "Ok, I know _what_ it was," he corrected. "But... why?"
"Why not?" Ava challenged. "Well... because... I don't know..." Sherevair stamered, utterly confused.
"Don't tell me you've been here three turns and not gotten some...experiences?" "Actually, I've been here all my life," he corrected her with a slight nervous break in his voice.
"And you don't know why people kiss?" Ava was the one who was now confused. She could understand An'dr's inexperience, he had impressed from stands and in such a young age. "Well, ok, I know the _idea_ behind kissing..." Sherevair shrugged. "I guess... I just... haven't done much of it."
"Then you just have to practise," Ava said simply, and she loved to teach. "Ummm... I-I-I don't know. What about the flowers? Didn't... didn't you want flowers?"
Ava had completely forgotten the flowers. "Flowers, right, flower necklace, okay. Get me some long stemmed flowers then," she said, being both resigned and determined at the same time. If not this time, maybe next time...
