F'nix

F'nix

Felnix spotted her on the cliffs overlooking the lake. Shells she was cute! Trying his best to look nonchalant, he strolled over to her. "Morning," he said, hoping he looked as though he was just there for the water view.

Harki glanced over to see who had interrupted her stretches and found herself standing next to a tall, handsome young man with attractive eyes and his hair tied back. And obviously a candidate. Her lips quirked into a smile as she extended her arms above her head to stretch her back. "Morning."

"Nice day." He knew the comment was inane, but his brain just couldn't think up the perfect words he'd rehearsed for the next time he saw her.

"Mmm. Isn't it?" Poor kid couldn't keep his eyes in his sockets. Harki did a backbend, just because it was funny.

"Yeah." He cursed his voice for squeaking. "How do you do that?" Sweet Faranth!

"Do what?" the greenrider asked innocently.

"Um." How did he even describe it without becoming tongue tied and making himself look like an idiot? "Never mind," he muttered.

She swallowed a laugh and did her best to look serious. "Stretching? It's just something I do. They recommended it in Weyrling classes and it's one of the few things that stuck. I find that it's good to warm up before any vigorous activity." Harki gave the young man a significant look and fought the urge to wink. "I'm sure _you_ know."

"Of course," he replied quickly. Shards, was she referring to what he _thought_ she was? "Maybe you could teach me some moves? I'm a quick learner."

"Are you?" Harki purred. This was too easy. She smiled. "Think you can keep up, do you...? I don't actually know who you are."

"Oh." Who was he? Oh, right, he remembered. "I'm Felnix. Candidate and apprentice harper, artist, at your service." He stuck out his hand, hoping she'd shake it.

The greenrider granted his wish. "Felnix. I'm Harki, riding Cerillith. Have you been at the Weyr long?"

"A couple of Turns," he replied. Her skin was so soft, he held on a little longer than courtesy allowed.

"A couple of Turns," she echoed. The greenrider tipped her head to one side as she looked at him. "Then how come I've never seen you around before? Have you been hiding?"

He laughed, although he didn't find it funny. "I've been around. The Weyr is a big place." Plus he wouldn't have dared to approach her until now.

"I suppose. So... why did you choose to come here instead of staying at the Harper Hall?" That was an honest question; Harki had grown up in the Weyr instead of choosing it, and she sometimes wondered what would have happened to her if she'd been born elsewhere.

"Because dragons." He grinned. "I couldn't imagine being anywhere else." Because girls too, but he wasn't so crass as to say that out loud.

"Me either." She flashed him a bright smile, then turned her attention to the lake. **Cerillith... is it clear?**

}:Yes,:{ came the green's reply. }:There is no one around.:{

The greenrider smiled in satisfaction and kicked off her battered slippers, then neatly stacked them by a rock at the edge of the cliff. "So, Felnix. Going from the Harper Hall to weyrling life. What are they teaching you these days?"

"The same things you learnt, I'm thinking," he replied. "How to deal with impression and mating."

Harki raised her eyebrows. **Bold.** "So what is the harper's favourite class?" she asked, undoing her belt.

"All of it," Felnix replied. "Anything that gets me closer to impressing a dragon is worthwhile."

She snorted as she stepped out of her pants and left them in a pile by her slippers. "That's the most kiss-ass answer I've heard in a long time. I didn't ask you if you thought they were worthwhile, I asked what you enjoyed the most."

He flushed. Lucky she wasn't a holder or her husband would belt the sass out of her. Fortunately it didn't bother him. He shrugged. "Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean it's not true. I've done the classes over and over. All I want now is to impress."

The greenrider grinned. **Good for him.** The boy wasn't a pushover, at least. "Well, maybe you will! I'll keep an eye out for you at the next Hatching. You know. Root for you and whatnot." She winked and pulled her shirt over her head.

"Thanks. And if I don't impress, feel free to help me commiserate." He smiled as winningly as he could.

"There's an idea! Depends, though." She stepped a bit closer to lay a finger on his chest. "I like people who can keep up to me." The greenrider turned and threw herself over the edge of the cliff, spreading her arms wide as she sailed several dragonlengths through the air to disappear beneath the water below with barely a ripple.

"Wait-" he started to say, but she was gone over the side. "Shells." He had two choices, walk away or follow her. It took a moment, but he took a step back and threw himself into a running jump into the air and down, down into the water.
