Genna

Genna

Genna idly tapped her desk with the pencil as she waited for E'naer to join
her. She was more than curious to see what he had to say about the current
candidates. She was familiar with some of them, after all she had been a
candidate herself not that long ago, but she figured E'naer would know them
much better. Plus, she had great trust in her former teacher.

"Welcome to the wonderful world of goldriders, Genna," E'naer said, walking
in carrying a large pile of hides. He carefully lowered it to the table
before giving her a proper greeting. "How's your day been?"

"Thank you, thank you," Genna grinned merrily as she peeked through the
pile of hides. "It's been good so far! I'm glad I have you to go through
these with me, though, or I wouldn't be in such a good mood at all."

"You're still tecnically a weyrling, so this is my job, guide you throug
your first Clutch," E'naer answered to her grin with his own. These kind of
things were the best part of being Weyrlingmaster's Third. "Now, as it's
your Clutch, you have the right to deny any candidate from Standing. You
don't even have to justify it, you can rule them out on a whim," E'naer
told her. "Never seen that happen though. There's just two reasons why
candidates are denied Standing: medical, like being pregnant or injured and
correctional, as punishment for breaking the rules," he continued. "Also
are weyrbrats and lower cavern residents from age 12 to 21 have the right
petition for permission to Stand from you. Have you received any petitions
yet?"

"I haven't yet," Genna said. "Though they may still come, right?" She
considered this for a moment, wondering if people who had been rejected
before might think it worth a try to try again with the new goldrider.
"Anything I should be looking out for if they do?"

"Always ask for the medical records," E'naer adviced. "There's list of
lower cavern workers within candidate age-range who have been permanently
disqualified from Standing. Most know and accept their situation, but few
of the mental cases may try to take advantage of your apparent youth and
inexperience."

"That's what I was worried about," Genna nodded. "Can I contact you when
I'm in doubt about one?" It was something that had taken her a while to
figure out, that she had a lot of people to back her up and teach her the
ropes. There'd been a time when she hadn't realised that and without all
the help and advice she'd have been sure to fail.

"Sure," E'naer promised. "You can also always ask from Saibra and Teseada
too. Teseada especially knows the weyrbrats very well," he continued. "If
in doubt, you also have a possibility to call a search dragon to check out
a petitioner. Just ask Lissath to bespeak to Galerith or Kadeth or any
other Search dragon."

"Of course," Genna nodded. "I'm glad to have so much back-up, I used to
think I'd be doing all of this alone! Now, where do we start?" she asked as
she picked up the first hide.

"Just start from the top of the pile," E'naer grinned. "Do you have any
ideas when Lissath will allow candidates to visit eggs?" he asked.

"I think she is ready for it any time you are. The eggs are hardened enough
to be touched by less experienced hands and she is eager to show them off."
Genna smiled as she read the first name. "What do you know of candidate
Alelya?"

"Alright, we can start bringing them in for visits then. As for Alelya,"
E'naer searched his memory for awhile, "She's been in Weyr for a Turn or
so, and has settled in to weyrlife bit too well. She's already taken one
short trip to /between/. I would demand healer's check up to see she's not
pregnant."

"I'll be sure to insist." Genna nodded, making a quick note on her list,
before moving on to the next. Ah! Aluka. She wondered what E´rae made of
her friend. "Candidate Aluka. What about him?"

"Nice boy, has some self confidence issues, hopefully he's resolved them,"
E'naer replied. "He shows a promise to become something great, if he only
believes in himself."

"I couldn't agree more," Genna said with a smile. "Lissath sees something
in him and I tend to trust her judgement on character. I've come to count
him as a friend to be honest."

"I'm glad to hear that," E'naer replied. He was rather fond of the boy
himself although he tried to avoid favouritism.

Genna made a note on her list and then put Aluka's file on the 'done' pile,
before moving on to the next hide. As they discussed the various 'A'
lettered candidates, Genna was impressed with E'naer's knowledge of them.

"You know, I'd always thought you'd be way to busy with the weyrlings to
mind all the candidates, but you guys really do keep a close eye on both
groups, don't you?"

"Yes, it's called long term planning," E'naer replied. "Most of those
candidates end up being weyrlings one day, so it helps _me_ if I already
know them well," he continued.

"That makes sense," Genna laughed, before continuing with the next
candidate. Soon they landed at the letter 'E'. "Elona's next, do you know
anything specific about her? I haven't met her yet, I'm pretty sure of
that."

"She's been here long enough to have a three turns old son born here. She's
decent sort and if she doesn't Impress, the Headwoman will snatch her up to
her staff," E'naer replied.

Genna nodded. "She has a little while longer to stand, hasn't she?"

"I think so," E'naer had to admit that he couldn't remember her exact age.
"The age should be there on the file. I don't remember all details from
every candidate."

Genna checked and nodded. "Sorry, I forgot that you can't know everything
about every candidate, because it almost seems like you do." She paused for
a moment, reading the next file. "Felnix. What is your opinion on him?"

"Cocky, braggard and bit of a bully, but salvagable. He might turn all
right in the end if he can tone down his attitude," E'naer replied.

"Hmm, maybe the responsibilities of impressing will tone him down some?"
Genna suggested.

"I've seen it happen," E'naer agreed. "Nothing like first touch with Thread
to bring some perspective."

Genna nodded, having seen it happen in her own class. There wasn't much
like Threadfall when it came to helping kids grow up into responsible
adults. As they went through the remainder of the candidates together,
Genna found herself reminiscing like she was already an old lady herself.
"Do you ever doubt your decision to join the Weyrling staff? All these kids
going into Fall with you..." Some of them never coming out again.

"No, not really. I mean, that I do have my bad moments, we all do, but they
don't overweight all the good sides of this job," E'naer replied.

"That is true, it must be very rewarding as well. I know both me and
Lissath are forever grateful for all your good cares."

"And I'm extremely proud of you two when I see how well you're handling
yourself." E'naer said and bowed.

"I'm glad and relieved to be living up to your expectations," Genna smiled,
before looking to the finished pile of documents. "Well, that seems to be
all of them. Thank you so much for your help, E'naer."

"Anytime," E'naer replied.
