F'nix

F'nix

This was silly, F'nix was in perfect health. Still, it never hurt to be sure, right? He sighed and forced a smile as he stepped into the room.

"Afternoon healer," he said politely.

"Afternoon, bluerider F'nix, I presume?" Taren asked, checking the name from his list of appointments.

F'nix grinned. He'd never get tired of hearing that. "Yes sir," he said happily.

"Take a seat," Taren pointed a free chair.

F'nix sat and put his hands in his lap.

"This is just a routine check up. As you're now a dragonrider, you will have one of these once in a Turn. Unless you receive an injury, then we will be seeing more often. I see you had your last check up soon after you arrived here as a candidate. No medical concerns since then?"

"No sir," F'nix replied. "None that I'm aware of anyway. I've always been pretty healthy." And he exercised as often as he could.

"What kind of fitness exercises you're doing?" Taren asked.

"Lifting, carrying, cleaning, running, walking. Um- there's others I can't do with restrictions in place." F'nix couldn't smile at that, it was frustrating.

"That's not considered as exercising, unless you're doing very vigorous acrobatics," The Weyrhealer's face didn't even twitch. "How have you settled into Weyrling life? Any sore muscles or other problems?"

"Some," F'nix admitted. "I'm not used to so much scooping and carrying." Dragons did poop a lot! "But my muscles aren't as sore as they were at first."

"Your body adjusts to the hard work," Taren said. "When you get to the part of your training that involves tossing filled firestone-sacks, the risk of injuries grows. You can prevent them by warming up your muscles beforehand," he instructed. He picked up stetoscope. "I want to listen to your hearth and lungs, please take off your shirt."

Under any other circumstances, he'd love to hear that. Instead F'nix smirked and tugged off his shirt. He lay it neatly across his lap.

Taren did his best to warm up the metal bit in his hands before pressing it against F'nix's skin. He made various requests while moving it around, first in chest and then on his back. "Lift up both of your arms. Cough. Take a deep breath."

The weyrling did as asked, trying to be as patient with the process as he could. Being fussed over by a healer wasn't his idea of fun by any means. "Am I all right?" he asked eventually.

"Healthy as a herdbeast," Taren replied when he was done. "I will check out your eyesight next." There was a board on his wall, which he went to turn around, to reveal the different sized letters on it. "Cover your left eye and tell me which letter you see," he started to point letters in different rows, going towards smaller ones.

F'nix didn't mind being compared to a herdbeast, although the comparison wasn't as accurate as he might like. He took a breath and focused.

"E. C. G. H. J…"

"Good, now the other eye," Taren asked.

F'nix repeated the process with the other eye, reading with the same accuracy.

"Normal eye sight," Taren wrote the results down. Then he tested F'nix's hearing with set of small bells.

"What would you do if it wasn't?" F'nix asked. It was too late to stop him from standing.

"Prescribe you eyeglasses. They've awkward during Falls but don't actually prevent you doing your duty. After all, it's your dragon's sight you will be relying more up there in the air," Taren replied. "Those whose eye sight is too impaired simply don't Impress."

"I don't think glasses would suit me," F'nix replied. He was silent then, so he could listen to the bells.

After few more tests, Taren declared him fit and healthy.

Nothing unexpected to F'nix. "Thank you." He said politely as he rose from his chair.

"If you're lucky, we won't see until next Turn around this time," Taren said. Which he hoped was the case, although it was more likely that he would end up patching the young blurider before that. "Take good care of yourself."

"I always do," F'nix replied, drawing himself up proudly.

"Clear skies to you and Nisith then," Taren grinned at his confident manner. He had to admit he prefered the rather boring, routine check up over some acute crisis.
