Jeyme

Jeyme

The appearance of a grizzled, grey muzzled green on the ledge of the
weyr was followed by a croon of greeting from her. Hunkering down, the
green hunkered down carefully, joints audibly creaking even as her
rider carefully climbed down. Grasping at her cane, Wylra moved
carefully towards the entrance.

"Ho there, Jeyme, isn't it? Are you home or is your green just laying about?"

Even though they had only met once Jeyme would never forget the older
greenrider. "Wylra? What brings you by?" She crossed the weyr to greet
her guest.

The older woman pulled off her riding helmet and greeted Jeyme with a
wry smile. "Just checking up on you and the lad. Heard 'round that you
were brave enough to breed with him." She gave a wink and a
mischievous chuckle. "So, I came to see that little one, since _he_
didn't think to invite me, nor has he bothered to visit in more than
three months." She eyed Jeyme. "Been keeping him busy, hmm?"

Jeyme chuckled at the insinuation from the other greenrider, "You
might say that, although not as scandalous as one might hope. Ever
since the baby was born he's taken most of our free time, what little
we had to begin with."

Crossing the weyr, Jeyme lifted the sleeping babe from his crib and
brought him over, "We named him Dheymin."

"Yes, babes tend to do that. Had three myself before I was smart
enough to stop and all three of them gave me grandchildren, the silly
things." She bustled to a chair, putting her cane to the side and held
out her hands. "Hand him over then." She took the baby from Jeyme and
eyed him with a smile, her wrinkled face softening. "Well now. He is a
little charmer ain't he?" She looked up at Jeyme, eyes knowing. "So,
you're still with him, hm? I guess you got him trained good and
proper, then."

"Of course I am still with him, I would think you'd be more surprised
that he's still with me." Jeyme sat and watched as Dheymin peered up
at Wylra with big round eyes, trying to determine who this strange
face belonged to. "As for training, I don't know if I'd say that. He's
been in a twist ever since the last Weyrleader flight."

The older woman snorted. "Hardly. For one, you're a pretty little
thing. For two, I knew that if that boy ever weyrmated, he'd stay with
it. Not a boy to do that lightly, after all." She eyed Jeyme. "Has he
now? I hoped you'd help remove that stick out of his ass. What's got
his knickers in a twist this time?"

Jeyme waved her hand through the air, "What _doesn't_ have his
knickers in a twist is the real question. I think the main thing this
time is that Cyradis purposefully increased her relationship with the
Weyrleader to be sure that he would win again. That really pissed
D'hol off."

Wylra stared at Jeyme for a bit, then pointedly rolled her eyes.
"Weyrwomen do that all the time. It's common. He should know better
than to take that to heart. A good partner is hard for a Weyrwoman to
find; once they get them, they try to keep them. Besides..." She
bounced the baby a bit and smiled at him. "D'hol and that woman
wouldn't work well together. Too much past that he's too much of an
idiot to let go of. And I've told him so."

"You aren't the only one." Jeyme muttered under her breath. "He took
what Cyradis did as the ultimate betrayal." She rolled her eyes
following the statement. "I probably wouldn't have made him half as
angry if I'd been prancing about in another man's weyr naked."

"I imagine he would see it that way, at least on the surface." The
older woman snorted. "Don't think it's about her at all, though. Not
really." She eyed Jeyme at the visual. "You do that and the man's head
might explode. Which one though..." She gave a little cackle, "well,
you never know."

Jeyme laughed, caught off guard by the older woman's joke. When she
had wiped the tears of laughter from her cheeks, Jeyme asked, "If it's
not about Cyradis then why is he so moody and touchy all the time
now?"

Sharing in her laughter, Wylra looked rather sly until Jeyme asked her
question. "Faranth, girl, you're his weyrmate. Why do you think?" She
tilted her head. "He's competitive, girl. Even at his age. And he's
been shown up by a younger man. The same one over and over again."
Wylra shook her head. "Men are impossible, bronzeriders more so and
even worse as they get older." She shook her finger at Jeyme. "Even
worse if they don't have a good woman to keep 'em in their place."

The brunette shook her head, "Maybe I am not right for him then
because I don't know how to do that." Jeyme's eyes studied Dheymin,
the perfect thing that she and D'hol had created.

Wylra stared at Jeyme and then calmly, but lightly, smacked the back
of her head. "Nonsense."

Again Jeyme found herself laughing, she could never guess what Wylra
was going to do next. "I just don't know what to do with him
sometimes, Wylra."

Bouncing the baby, the older woman sniffed. "It's one thing to put up
with the occasional bad mood but quite another to put up with it all
the time. If he's being an ass, tell him so." She laid Dheymin on her
shoulder, patting his back. "First time I met you, I told you to go
toe to toe with him. Meant it." She arched a silver brow. "Don't tell
me that you're letting him have his way all the time."

A sheepish expression crossed Jeyme's face, "Well, yeah maybe a
little. I just thought it would make him.. happy."

"Oh sweet Faranth, girl...what about you?" She looked at Jeyme and
shook her head. "How can you make him happy if you're not happy? And
you're not. I'm old but I'm not blind. You never struck me as a girl
who wanted to be walked all over. You've a spine, girl. Use it." She
continued patting Dheymin. "I've been his friend for nearly thirty
years. It's hard to be his friend some days. The boy is stubborn and
willful and quite frankly, can be a wher's ass. But he respects me
because he knows full well that I'll rap him over the head if he needs
it. That's what he needs from you. "

Jeyme trusted Wylra's judgement, after all, she had known D'hol a lot
longer than Jeyme, and she seemed to be able to say things to the
bronzerider that would get other people tossed off the Weyr. "I'll do
my best because you're right, I'm not very happy right now."

"Let me tell you something. No man, not even a man you love, is worth
making yourself unhappy. Don't let a man make you miserable. Like I
told you the first time. Stand up for yourself or D'hol will walk all
over you and not realize he's doing it."

"You're right, as usual." Jeyme tucked her legs under as she adjusted
her position on the couch. "Are you going to stay long enough to visit
with D'hol some?"

Wylra seemed to think about that for a moment. "I may just, but
knowing me as well as I do, I might just knock him around the head a
bit, and I think that's going to have to come from you, girl. I came
to see the little lad." She smiled down at Dheymin, clucking her
finger under his chin. "And a fine little lad he is too. " The older
woman eyed Jeyme and then pursed her lower lip. "You know, you and
D'hol don't have to stay here. There's other Weyrs. He'd be welcome
back at Dragons Fall. "

"I wouldn't be opposed to moving if that is what D'hol wanted, but it
would be kind of hard to give up the sun and sand for the weather at
Dragonsfall." Jeyme had never been to the other Weyr but she had heard
horror stories from people who did.

"Well, it's just a thought." Wylra shrugged. "Keep it in mind. Maybe a
fresh start is what the two of you need." She paused. "Or just getting
that long stick yanked out of his arse."

Jeyme laughed, although in her mind she was now thinking... maybe a
fresh start _was_ what they needed.
