Fixing Them

Description: Harki and Rorela have a wine talk.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 3, day 24 of Turn 8

"So have you seen much of G'nir?" Harki lounged on Rorela's bed, her
battered leather slippers dangling off the tips of her toes and her
wineglass held just as carelessly. They had convened in Rorelas' weyr
after drills that day, and Harki couldn't help but ask. "Wonder how
he's adjusting?"

"Not well." Rorela admitted. "I've been seeing more of him." She
sighed softly. "I never realized how important being the Weyrleader
was for him. It's as if somehow, not being one makes him less."

Harki wrinkled her nose as she thought. "He can't have expected his
dragon to catch _every_ time... did he?"

"I think he did. He's wanting to leave now, as if that would make it easier."

"As an expert in avoidance and running away from things I don't like,
I can say with authority that's a load of wherry shit," Harki said
dryly. "I never pictured G'nir as a quitter."

"I didn't either." Rorela shook her head. "I'm actually not quite sure
what to do with him. It's not as though we're in any sort of
relationship or anything. I'll actually be the new Weyrleader's
wingthird now. So..."

"So don't do anything."

"Well, aren't you just bundles of help."

Harki sipped her wine, unbothered by Rorela's ire. "You just said it,
though-- you're not in any sort of relationship with G'nir. Yes, it's
sad that he's sad, but it's not your job to fix him."

Looking thoroughly displeased and discomforted, Rorela echoed Harki's
sip with her own. "I'm not trying to fix him," she protested.

"Then what are you trying to do?" Harki asked.

"Well..." She paused and tugged at a lock of her short hair. "I guess
trying to help him feel better. It's not the end of Pern that he's not
the Weyrleader any more. And I hate seeing him like that. He's usually
so..." Her nose wrinkled. "...tightly wound up and proper."

"So sex him up and call it a day," Harki said with a shrug. "Seemed to
work before."

"That's a temporary thing, even for me. Even I'm not that good."

The greenrider grinned wickedly. "Maybe, but he _will_ feel better."

"Yeah, probably." Rorela grinned back, but hers was no where near as
mischievous. "But then what? I make him mindless and keep on doing it
so he doesn't think?"

Harki shrugged again. "If you want. Not thinking works pretty well for
me. But from what you've told me, the only thing that will 'fix' G'nir
for more than a night is if Nirreth catches Chioneth again, and that's
really not something you can provide for him."

"Maybe our next restday, I'll have to keep him mindless." Rorela
decided. Suddenly wanting to change the subject, she eyed Harki.
"So...seen Ma'din lately?"

The other greenrider finished her wine and eyed her empty glass sadly.
"Not recently. How come?"

Catching the look, Rorela swung her feet off of the bed and rose. She
moved to a cabinet, brought out another wine skin, and popped it open
easily. She filled Harki's glass without having to be asked, then
filled her own. "I think he's missing you."

"Really?" Harki looked up in surprise. "I didn't think Ma'din missed anyone."

Rorela blinked at Harki and then smirked, shaking her head. "He's
brash and all, but he's still human. He's got a heart buried under all
of that ego and swagger."

"Well, maybe I'll see if he's free tomorrow. Or he could always come
find me too," Harki replied. It was flattering that Ma'din missed
her... maybe a bit more than flattering. But she didn't want to seem
too eager in front of Rorela. Who knew what the Wingthird might read
into it. "I don't exactly hide."

Rorela tilted her head. "He doesn't either. But...you have been
different since P'nal." Her voice was gentle. "Not as approachable."

Hearing P'nal's name wasn't easy. Harki shrugged it off. "I don't know
about that."

"I do." Rorela replied firmly. "You're more distant and less..." She
waved her hands, trying to find the words. "Less you. "

Harki snorted. "I don't think that's true at all. I'm pretty sure that
I'm exactly the same as I always am. Besides, that was months ago. And
people die in Thread. Fact of life."

"It's very true, Harki. You're not the same." Rorela took a drink of
her wine. "But like you said, that was months ago. We all grieve
differently I guess." She shrugged. Harki would handle things in her
own way, just like she did. And at least she'd stopped most of the
risky antics. "You should go see Ma'din."

"Maybe. We'll see." After being prodded at, Harki felt like being
contrary-- even if she was fair game after calling Rorela out about
G'nir.

Rorela immediately mimicked Harki's snort. "At least you'll be in a
better mood after you go see him." She paused and then looked at
Harki, with a wider, devious smile. "Since you and G'nir both need to
get laid...you can sex up each other. Easy! And it'll help both of you."

"Oh, gross!" Harki stuck out her tongue and made a face. "I'd rather
bed a wherry!"

Rolling her eyes, Rorela shook her head. "He's actually really good, you know."

"You keep telling yourself that," Harki told her, and then finished her wine.
