"Aishara," R'enh said as he came up behind her in line for dinner. He
put his hand on the small of her back and leaned forward to kiss her
cheek. "Haven't seen you the last few days." Or had it been longer, he
couldn't really remember the last time they'd spent any quality time
together.
"R'enh," she said softly, her body leaning automatically towards his.
"It's been longer than that," she said with mild reprimand. He hadn't
even taken her to the Harper Hall Ball with had hurt a little. She
quickly smothered such feelings. She was not going to get clingy or
jealous.
"I'm sorry," he immediately apologized. He had no doubt he was the one
at fault. He'd been caught up with escorting Saibra and while he was
with her he focused on her. But that was equally true when he was with
Aishara. R'enh's focus was always on the woman he was with. "I didn't
mean to," he added softly. "Have dinner with me. His eyes were serious
and apologetic.
"Of course I will," Aishara said. Like she could stay angry around him.
"Good," he smiled and pulled a tray for her and then one for himself
so he could follow her through the line.
Aishara got herself the food. She had an healthy appetite. She also
lived physically active live and used up all calories she ate. She
then found them relatively secluded seats so they could talk in peace.
R'enh slid into the bench right next to her instead of across. Thighs
touching he stroked her knee under the table before picking up his
utensils. "What have you been up to," he asked with a smile.
"Nothing special," Aishara replied. "Just the usual stuff." She
briefly pressed her hand against his when it stroked her knee. Shards,
she had missed these little touches.
"And how is Ayumith?" He knew he'd been out of the Weyr the last time
she'd risen and he'd missed the rush to claim the greenrider.
"She's fine, being herself," Aishara replied. "I think she missed
Mnoranth, that is until someone else came along to win her." She
flashed him a smile.
He chuckled, "definitely my loss." He twirled his fork in some noodles
and looked at her again. "Would you like to take a walk on the beach
after dinner?"
"Yes, that would be wonderful," Aishara replied. Any excuse to spend
little more time with him.
"Great," he smiled and took a sip of his wine. "Looks like it's going
to be a beautiful night." And he really did mean the weather and the
sunset. They lived in such a lovely location it was sometimes sad they
didn't have the time to just enjoy it. He looked at her seriously for
a moment. So sweet and undemanding yet always there, he smiled.
Aishara was good for him and yet he didn't always appreciate how good.
"I lost the flight at Dragonsfall," he said.
"I've heard about it," Aishara said. "Although personally I'm kind of
happy that you lost it," she continued with laughter sparkling in her
eyes. "That means you're staying here."
"It does," he grinned thankful for the smile in her eyes. She was
never jealous as so many women could be. As much as the fire between
them burned steadily he had these flare ups with other women, she was
still there warm and wonderful. Very mature for such a young woman.
If there was anything he knew about himself and about Saibra, it was
that the fire between them would eventually fade away. She was one of
those flares that burned hot and intense and he did care about her.
Aishara on the other hand... he set down his fork and reached for her
hand. Pulling it toward him he kissed her fingers. "Ready for that
walk?"
"Yes, I am," Aishara replied. She had finished her meal and now piled
up her dishes neatly before taking R'ehn's hand.
He led her out of the dining cavern and into the bowl where long
shadows chased each other in pink waves across the sandy ground. "This
way," he said and went toward the beach and around to where the grass
ran up to the rip rap protection against flooding in the Weyr.
The view of the sunset was spectacular and when they got to the point
he stood with his arms wrapped around her waist from behind.
"Thank you," he said and kissed the side of her face.
"You're welcome, whatever it's for," Aishara replied. She had wrapped
her arm around his waist and was enjoying the sunset.
"Oh, I'm just unbelievably unfair to you and yet... you're just
amazing about it." He sighed as the sun dipped into the horizon. "Come
home with me tonight?"
"Of course I will. You only have to ask," Aishara replied and gave him
a brilliant smile. She was willing to wait forever for him to notice
her. When he did, she treasured these moments.
He turned her toward him and captured her lips. The thought of having
her stay with him had entered his mind more than once but he was
hesitant. How many times in the past had he tried to weyrmate only to
find a demanding possessive woman in his weyr after a few months.
Maybe that was why he'd felt so unsuccessful in the past. The decision
to limit interaction to the occasional light liasons might come from
those experiences but from what he'd seen of Aishara, she wasn't that
way... maybe.
All of that flitted through his mind in a flash but then he just let
it go and took her hand. The sun had set and light was fading from the
sky. "Let's go," he said softly.
"Going!" Aishara replied with heat.
