Zathris

Zathris

It was three days after Yusanis' interview for the Steward's position.
He'd spent the intervening time exploring the Hold itself and the
immediate territory. His goal had been getting to know some of the
people who worked with the Steward's staff, getting to know the area,
and learning about what generally went on at the Hold's grounds. If an
offer of employment was extended to him, he'd be better prepared to
start the job. Everything he'd seen so far showed a very successful
Hold that was well-run. He was sure he could love the place.

Now he'd been summoned back to the Lord's office. As Yusanis waited
outside of the door, he wondered what the news would be. He hoped he'd
at least be given an assistant position.

"Enter." Zathris' voice resonated through the wooden door and when he
saw who it was had arrived, he motioned for the man to come in and
close the door. "Ah, Yusanis, good, I'm glad you're here. Have a
seat."

"My Lord," Yusanis said with a bow. He settled into the seat and tried
not to look overly expectant or overly bored, hoping for neutrality.

"Thank you for coming." Zathris straighted a bit more and gazed
across the desk at the other man. "I've come to a decision about the
Steward position."

Yusanis straightened up at the statement, hoping the news was good.
"I'm hopeful that it's good news, sir."

"Well, I was wondering when you could start." Zathris offered a half
grin to the expectant man. "How long would it take you to get your
affairs in order?"

"If I have to travel overland, a sevenday to get there, pack up,
inform the boss, and get back," Yusanis replied.

"I've a brother who's a dragonrider and, for some reason, he likes me.
I can probably ask if he'd be willing to give you a ride." Zathris
needed a Steward and the sooner he had one, the better.

"I could come back the day after I arrive at Malachite Gulch. All I
have to do is turn in a resignation and pack," he assured.

"I'll have someone send their firelizard to him with a message and see
if he's available any time soon." Zathris was grateful to have
someone who could come so quickly. With Wirnan gone, the other
stewards had to pick up the slack and now they would have a bit more
direction. "Welcome to the Hold, Yusanis."

"Thank you for having me, my Lord," Yusanis replied, eager and excited
to start the new challenge.

Two sevendays later, Yusanis looked around the Steward's office, and
felt momentarily overwhelmed. Starting a new job always meant a
settling-in period, and taking over the top job even more so.
Fortunately the immediate understewards had been well-trained and
responsible and he'd found them useful resources. He certainly
couldn't complain about how they'd been trained by the prior
management.

He'd been excited to figure out how he and Zathris would work
together, as well. The man had seemed fair and interested in a good
relationship. Yusanis had hoped that while the Lord was gone on
negotiations, he'd settle in with his staff, so he could jump straight
into the working partnership when the Lord returned.

But now he was worried. The news of Lord Zathris' disappearance had
been passed to critical members of the Hold. Soon, all would know.
With Zathris missing for an unknown period of time, he knew more would
be expected of him. Was he ready for the challenge? Had two sevendays
in the job prepared him for it? After all, while he was solidly
trained in Hold management, he still had so much to learn about the
peculiarities of Amber Hills itself.

Well, he could always rely on Benaroy's other sons. Some of them had
solid heads and the long experience with their home needed. Between
himself and them, they'd keep Amber Hills running solidly, and when
Lord Zathris came back, he'd see that the Hold had been fine. He'd
realize that he made the right choice in picking Yusanis as the
Steward.

Yes, he shouldn't be worried. He should accept this as a challenge of
his skills. He thrived on those.
