Description: The Weyrleader is talking with a Healer.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 4, day 26 of Turn 8
Notes: Mentioned: Y'gel, K'sedel, Rhosyn
K'ran had genuinely meant to see the Healers earlier. After all, they
were some of the Weyr's most important crafters. But during the first
few days he hadn't had retrieved his medical records. Once he had
them, he came down to the Infirmary during a free moment and smiled at
the apprentice. "I'd like to turn my records into one of the Master
Healers, please."
"Right away Weyrleader," the boy sid, scurrying off.
Reeva blinked softly when the boy- suitably castigated for not simply
bringing the bronzerider through in the first place- returned
sheepishly the second time with K'ren in tow. She wasn't used to
people meeting her at eye level.
"I'm sorry the Weyrhealer couldn't see you. He is...unwell."
More likely asleep, as the old man usually was, but never mind that.
"Just a routine check up, or do I need to worry, Weyrleader?"
"I hope he's alright," K'ran said with some concern. "My goal was to
come in, turn in my records, and have a routine exam while I get to
know the Weyr's critical personnel."
Reeva half smiled at the last bit.
"Good. With luck, that means it will be easier getting you back in
here when necessary then it is with the Weyrwoman. I like a man who
does what he's told." She winked slightly at the words, to take any
out sting he might see there if he was touchy.
"Anything been bothering you recently? Old injuries, recent
threadscore, anything at all? And your bronze, of course- our Weyr
Dragon Healer is well skilled, and may appreciate the chance to run an
eye over your big lad."
She poured a drink while talking, but her eyes remained on the new
Weyrleader, looking for the things that remained unsaid.
"The Weyrwoman doesn't much like meeting her scheduled appointments? I
know many a 'rider who skips out on their own, so it's no surprise,"
he added, not wanting to sound as though he was critical of his new
partner.
"I've always been reasonably healthy, only minor scorings here and
there from glancing blows."
The comment about Rogueth was easy to answer. "I've a meeting with Y'gel
tomorrow, as a matter of fact."
"I can emphatically state that almost every rider in this Weyr will
avoid following a single one of my healer's commands, whilst making
absolutely certain to follow Y'gel's to the tee."
She smiled to show it was light-hearted, though the ways riders
interpreted 'stay in be for three days' to mean anything but what it
did still fascinated her. She glanced down at the records he'd brought
with him. Though she'd read them in detail later, a quick glance
suggested nothing other then what he'd admitted to.
"If you've no specific issues you wish to raise with me, Weyrleader,
then it will just be the usual basics. I'll handle the more wordy part
of it, I think, because there are some questions, however routine,
that are best asked quietly of new leadership, but if you would prefer
one of my male colleagues for the routine physical I will not be
offended in the slightest. It shouldn't take too long. You're probably
quite used to it by now."
He gave a half-shrug. "I'll be fine with you, ma'am."
Reeva smiled. On another day, thee would have been a ribald retort,
bit she was tired herself.
She indicated the chair opposite her, not launching into the routine
health questions before he was comfortable. When she did, eyes a
little keener under their lids then she let on were watching. It was
amazing what you could pick up just by looking.
After several boring rote questions, she asked the one that usually
managed to elicit more ore then truth. "And mentally, sir? Anything
concerning you in that area? Some sadness at the move, perhaps, or
the weight of your new position?"
That was a tough one to answer, because he was still processing his
own feelings on the matter. "I knew Cyan Wing well and I had someone
at Dragonsfall, so there's a bit of sadness," he said honestly.
"It's a big responsibility, a big challenge, and a heavy pair of
knots. But of course, being a Weyrleader is every bronzerider's dream,
isn't it? Rogueth's confidence is infectious." She was genuinely
surprised to get what sounded like an honest- and unoffended-truth.
"Do you feel it's something you will adapt to? You and the special someone?"
"We're dragonriders. Moving is a fact of life - and transferring is a
possibility. If not, Dragonsfall is only a few breaths away," he said,
trying to convince himself of his words as much as her. "I think I
would have been far more sad if she'd transferred off to a promotion
and I'd stayed behind. Having the job as a challenge is a positive."
Reeva nodded. She made a few notations, but it was pretty clear they
were not of a serious nature. "That certainly seems in order, then."
"Is there anything else you want to ask me, personally or
professionally?" he queried. It was possible the Healer had something
else to say.
Reeva opened her mouth to let him go, then hesitated.
"It's a small thing... but K'sedel and I had an understanding. The
healers respect the riders...and the rider's respect us. Our
hesitations can kill, sir. I ask that my healer's- no matter how
young, no matter how inconsequential to someone else's rank- are not
interfered with when practicing their craft. Whether it's ego, genuine
attempt to help or plain stupidity. I am brazen and ranked, and quite
happy to tell someone to take a hike if they are in the way, but not
all of my healers are as well ranked or as big mouthed. I would
appreciate knowing that you felt the same."
She perhaps should not have used 'my'... but she'd never met a master
who wasn't propitiatory over their craft, anyway.
He nodded as she spoke, giving himself a moment to absorb her words.
"I understand. You're the master of your domain, and deserve to be
respected as such. I wouldn't question you there. I can pass the word
along. And if you need more personnel or any other assistance from my
end, just ask."
"Then I think we are done for now, Weyrleader?" Reeva rose to escort him out.
