Nohria was not looking forward to this. Most assuredly not in the least. It was with a very subdued manner that she went to the usual tavern table, where her boss waited with another bandit.
Goulan was leaning back against the wall, a very large glass of beer in front of him. He was working on the third of the night. His mood was particularly foul because of recent events. That new over-Steward was actually competent, shard the man, and he'd been asking questions about the thefts and the tithe discrepancies. It was almost like he'd been reading everything in detail. Goulan had hoped the new man would be too lazy or too overworked for that. Didn't he have something better to do with his time?
When Nohria came over, he lifted his head and grunted. "Yer late."
"My apologies," Nohria said, seating herself. "The night guard presence has increased. I had to avoid them." Especially while dressed like a woman of loose morals. She motioned to the beer. "Is there one for me, by chance?"
"Sure," said Eraklin, pushing over a smaller glass.
"The guards're suspicious after D's capture, I suppose. What a mess," said Goulan.
Eraklin didn't say anything. He'd hoped his brother would make it to the rendesvous. Instead he grumbled and sipped his own beer.
Nohria knocked back a good swallow of the beer. The rich, malty taste was bracing. "We may need to stop for a while, even if Zathris is still gone," she said bluntly, though she knew no one would like hearing that. "The guards were a hinderance before, but now they're dangerous. Especially the one called Corran; he _thinks_ when he fights." He fought like a woman should, actually, using the environment and what leverage he could get to hold off an opponent. Nohria didn't chase that thought, however; she had a feeling she wouldn't like where it lead.
"He's the one you hit the crap out of, right?" Eraklin asked.
"He's probably too injured to worry about," Goulan said.
"Once he recovers, he'll be an even bigger issue," Nohria warned. "I didn't hit him as hard as I wanted to, unfortunately." That could have created an even worse mess. "But if we continue, we have to go back to the small stuff for a while." They didn't have to take her seriously; they were higher in the chain of command than she was. But she hoped they would.
"Who else do you advise I keep an eye on? Maybe I can find something to discredit them," Goulan said.
"Want me to hurt any of them? If they could get scheduled for a long patrol outside the Hold, we could trap 'em," Eraklin said, thinking. Goulan might be able to contrive that. And he wanted revenge.
Nohria considered it, finishing half the beer before shaking her head. "It's too risky. If anyone realizes just how close we are to the Hold, the guard presence will be stepped up even more. If they wander into our territory, that's one thing. Looking for trouble is another. As for who else, definitely keep tabs on Yusanis, and the Lady's servants. Maybe the Lady, too, if there's any chance of getting close enough." It wasn't likely, but hey.
"You're a woman, you could look into that part better than I could," Goulan pointed out.
He had a point, sadly. This wouldn't be pleasant either. "I'll see what I can do."
"If we can't theive any more, perhaps we can still spread rumors," Eraklin said. "Make people think it'll be like this until a real leader comes in."
"Good idea. I'll see if I can stick some bugs in some ears," Nohria promised, looking to Goulan for backup. Two sowing dissent was better than one.
"That sounds fine to me. I'll find something to catch the Steward in," Goulan said. Maybe then he'd get the job.
"Then we have a plan." Nohria raised her glass. "For a better day," she said, and knocked back the remainder before getting up to leave.
"For better days," the other rebellious men agreed.
