D'lorn had them all lined up for inspection. It was time to make sure that this all went well. When everything was ready and they were lined up, the greenrider smiled and looked up at Villith, who was keeping careful watch. She wasn't a queen but it was her job to take care of them all and she would do it. "Allright is everyone ready?" He looked over their faces. They were young and hopeful. This was a good time.
"Yes, sir," F'dal replied. Both he and his dragon were almost vibrating with barely contained, nervous energy. He had slept poorly last night, excited by today's event. Velaith was growing well, although he would never be the largest of bronzes.
}: Can we go now? :{ Velaith asked. His tail twitched in anticipation.
**Not yet, they need to give us permission first,** F'dal replied.
}: I can't wait, :{ The bronze said with impatient huff.
** Me either! ** His rider was equally impatient.
After the first few dragons went, D'lorn went down the line. "Allright Velaith, your turn. And remember-not too high and not too far! You'll hurt yourself!" He gave F'dal a pointed look that meant he had better control his bronze and set an example.
F'dal nimbly scrabbled up to his bronze's back and clipped the straps on. He gave them to tug to reassure himself. This was not same as climbing a mast.
}:Now? :{ Velaith checked eagerly.
**Yes, now. Just short flight, remember,** F'dal replied.
Velaith spread his wings wings to their full length, gave them a good stretch to warm his muscles. He crouched and then jumped to the air.
"Outch! Hey! Watch it!" F'dal yelled when the force of the launched whipped his neck back.
}: Sorry! :{, Velaith was unremorseful. Two wingbeats took him surprisingly far and high. He wasn't prettiest bronze but he was a strong one.
**Now, down!** F'dal commanded.
}: I don't want to, :{ Velaith protested. He was enjoying the flight and his rider's weight on his back felt _right_ somehow. He was born to do this.
**Let's show everyone how to land properly,** F'dal baited him by appealing to his ego.
}: Oh, like this? :{, F'dal's tactic had worked and Velaith back winged to a perfect, soft landing.
**Yes,** F'dal replied and rubbed his neck. It was going to be sore.
"Well done! Remember it should have been more of a glide than a launch though. Next time!" D'lorn shouted, watching the other weyrlings take their turns. Finally, though, the greenrider saw Velaith come back up again. A glimpse at the pair gave him a thought. In the future, they could indeed be some of the Weyr's leaders perhaps. He smiled to himself, seeing potential in the younglings. "Come on then, better this time, F'dal."
"Yes, sir!" F'dal replied. **So, no neck-break launch-off's this time,** he told Velaith and patted the bronze's neck.
}: Alright, :{ Velaith replied and rose to the air. This time it was much better. The distance they flew was bit longer and his landing as near perfect as possibly.
**You're good at this,** F'dal complimented.
}: Of course I am. I was born for this, :{ the young dragon crooned.
"There you go!" The greenrider was quick to praise. It was much better when things went well. Smiling to himself, he watched as the next pair got into line. He could do this all day.
}:Wonderful job, Velaith. You learn fast.:{ Villith told him privately.
}: Of course I do, I'm a bronze, :{ Velaith replied to her, preening under the praise.
**Someone is going to have a swollen head, ** F'dal murmured to him and slid down from Velaith's back. "It's time to take straps off and head for a bath," he told his dragon.
