"Come on, kiddo, I'll walk you back to your mom's weyr." K'yne said, hooking Kaibren in headlock and scrubbing the top of his head.

"Uncle K'yyynneee!" Kaibren squealed, wiggling to get free. By the time he did worm his way out from under his uncle's arm, Kaibren's face was flushed red, his eyes shining from laughter. "I'm not going to mom's, I'm suppose to be staying with my foster mother all sevenday."

K'yne raised an eyebrow, curious since he knew Saibra had always kept her children with her as much as her schedule allowed, especially on Restdays. "Why?"

Kaibren shrugged, clearly not finding anything suspicious, "I dunno, something about she's not feeling good and she doesn't want to get me sick."

The brownrider knew it was none of his business, and he also knew that Saibra would probably gouge out his eyes if he checked on her, but still... He knew that she was pregnant, and normal morning sickness wouldn't cause her to keep Kaibren away.

"To Yowanda's then!" He said, leading the way to the creche.

The glows were nearly shuttered completely, leaving Saibra's weyr a dim, sad gray, which was fine by her, it matched the way she felt on the inside. The majority of the miscarriage was over, now she only had to regain her strength and some how find it within herself to put on a normal face and pretend to the rest of the Weyr as if she were fine.

"Saibra?" The voice that called in to her weyr usually brought a rush of bitterness or anger, but today, today the voice inspired nothing inside her.

"Come in." She said automatically, her voice scratchy.

K'yne walked slowly into the dark weyr, growing more puzzled with each step. When his eyes adjusted to the dimness he was shocked. Saibra was wrapped in a blanket on her couch, her dark hair hanging limply around a pale face.

"Kaibren said you were sick. I wanted to check on you."

"Why?" She asked without looking at him, "I haven't been remotely nice to you since you moved here."

K'yne felt as if he were treading on thin ice, it was so easy to say the wrong thing to Saibra, "I promised K'fel I would always look after you. I intend to do that."

For once the goldrider didn't explode on him, or toss some nasty remark in his face, she merely nodded without making any remarks. Her unusual behavior worried K'yne as he lowered himself onto the couch beside of her.

"What's really going on Saibra? You told Kaibren you were sick?"

He studied the side of her face as her jaw clenched and unclenched, fresh tears glistening at the corners of her blue eyes.

"I am sick, but it's not contagious. R'enh was injured in Threadfall and evening knowing what could happen... I went anyway. I lost the baby because I'm a sick person. A sick, self-centered person. All those things you've said about me before are true." The tears that had gathered slid silently down the smooth planes of her cheeks.

K'yne's gut clenched. He was critical of many of the decisions that Saibra had made since K'fel's death, but this wasn't the kind of 'you were right' that he had ever been looking to receive.

"What did R'enh say?"

A bitter laugh escaped her. "He doesn't know. He doesn't know I was pregnant, that I went to Dolphin Cove, or that I killed our baby. He has a weyrmate, I guess you could call her that, she was there by his side when I arrived. I wasn't needed there."

K'yne reached out and laid a gentle hand on her shoulder, "I'm sorry, Saibra, I know how much you were looking forward to having another child."

She seemed to come undone at his touch, sliding sideways and burying her face in his neck as she cried. This was the second time in her life that she had found herself utterly alone, and K'yne, the man she had been brutally cruel to, was there to provide her a shoulder to cry on. What was wrong with her?

The brownrider didn't know what to say, soothing words had never been his strong point, so he settled for wrapping an arm around Saibra's shoulders as she cried. He couldn't help but think that if she had chosen him, all those Turns ago after K'fel's death, instead of running away, that none of this would be happening. K'yne knew that he would never break her heart. He could provide her with children, and unconditional love, but there was such a chasm between them that he didn't know if such a thing would ever be possible. For now, as he had for the past eight Turns, he would settle for loving Saibra from a distance, and helping her whenever she would let him.
