Description: D'ale and K'ran catch up.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 5, day 11 of Turn 8

D'ale set down his gitar when he saw his former wingleader striding
toward where he played with some of the harpers. "K'ran," he smiled
broadly.
"D'ale, how is it going?" K'ran asked, smiling at the brownrider.
"Lots of work," D'ale smiled and reached out to clasp the other man's
forearm and pull him in for a shoulder bump and back slap. "Faranth
those knots look good on you," he widened his grin.
"They still feel strange," K'ran confessed. "A part of me wishes I'd
won here, where I knew everyone. Who would have thought going to help
relief efforts would end up like this?"
D'ales smile didn't falter as he quipped, "Oh I know! And I'm sure I
could feel put out that _another_ bronzerider has dumped the wing back
in my lap to go be a Weyrleader. But my heart wouldn't be in it."
"Are you still leading for now?" he asked.
"For the time being, or at least until K'reyel finds someone better."
D'ale didn't mind in the least. He enjoyed a challenge and the wing
was used to his style. It had become a blend of U'kaiah and K'ran's.
He'd learned a lot from both men and felt confident in his role as
they flew the mid-tier under the Weyrleader's wing.
"How's your wing at Riverbluff?"
"The high altitude is certainly interesting," he said. "I've been
adapting myself to their style. They've had consistent leadership for
so long it seemed easier that way. It's been interesting flying
coastal wind patterns again."
"Did I ever tell you I spent some time there once?" He wasn't sure if
he'd mentioned to K'ran his aborted attempt at weyrmating Dalora's
mother at Riverbluff.
"No, you didn't. Did you like it there?"
"Oh well then. I was there for a bout seven turns. Most of it before
Thread returned." He smiled. "Coming back here to reconnect with my
son though, it turned out far better than I could have hoped."
"it must be nice to have such a strong connection with your son,"
K'ran said. As far as he was aware, he didn't have any children. The
thought sometimes made him sad.
"K'ale's a good kid," D'ale nodded. "Were you aware he's been seeing
your Lanniya?"
K'ran shook his head. "No, I wasn't. Have they become friends?"
"So far as I know," D'ale half smiled. "Though he seems interested in
more than friends. I've advised him to take it slow. But I'm one to
talk, right?" They both knew about his own fling with a hold lady that
had turned into her leaving her home to come to Dragonsfall. Yes, she
was headwoman now but that was all her own doing.
"If it winds up going that way, it seems like it would be a good
match," K'ran said. "And of course, the heart wants what it wants."
"It does, doesn't it," D'ale nodded in the direction of a very subdued
and unhappy looking young gold-rider who was doing her best to look
anywhere but at the Riverbluff Weyrleader. "Too bad things can happen
to interfere with our lives at a time when we least expect it." He put
a hand on the younger man's shoulder. "We have to make choices based
on what our dragons choose. I really am happy for you."
"I'm pleased to make Weyrleader, I can't deny. Though..." It was
D'ale, and the man was his friend, and no one from River Bluff was in
earshot. "A part of me wishes it had been Chioneth he won, so we were
still here. Though of course, you can't tell your dragon that..."
D'ale couldn't help the chuckle. "I'd imagine K'reyel is thinking much
the same but in reverse. After all he _was_ Weyrleader at Riverbluff
for a time."
"A pity the queens didn't see fit to have it work out that way." K'ran
half-shrugged. "I suppose we'll see how long it lasts. At the very
least I'll enjoy Rogueth having sired one clutch. It's enough for me."
D'ale nodded. He knew K'ran was aware his son's brown had done the
same no matter the clutch was small. At the time both the gold and
Imalkyth had been young. "Yes," he said finally. "It is a very good
thing. Besides, they need new blood there and that is likely why she
chose him. Is it a good partnership?"
"So far it seems to be. I tried to go in with no expectations. She
handles her side of the duties, I mine, and I try to seek consensus
where they overlap." It was a better working relationship than some
he'd seen.
"Well that sounds workable. Frankly, I'd heard she can be...
difficult." Okay so maybe that was a bit of an understatement. But he
knew K'ran far better than Rhosyn. He'd left Riverbluff before she'd
arrived. Now if it had been Tsaera he had no doubts K'ran would have
had a dynamic and competent partner.
"I had heard the same, but it hasn't been bad," K'ran said. Though
even if it had been, he wouldn't have complained about it at a public
event like this one.
"Are you coming to our Hatching?" he asked.
"Absolutely," he smiled back. "Yanley wouldn't miss it for the world.
You know she's Headwoman now so she wants to get a good look at how
Solieira does things for an event like that. You know, get some
ideas."
"Oh, you'll like the plans we have. There are going to be these
hanging lights that will be beautiful. I hope you and she like it."
"Looking forward to it," he smiled and held out his hand. He'd seen a
couple of people making toward them so he knew they'd pretty much used
up their allotted time. "We'll see you there."
