"I have the latest report on our progress." Kaphrad told the
Hallmaster. They'd come a long way with the repairs to the Hall but
there was still much to do.
Relik was sitting at the head table, eating his midday meal in the Great
Hall. Putting down his klah mug, he nodded and waited to hear what Kaphrad
had to say since it was obviously important to them both.
"The main living quarters have only minor issues remaining, though
many of the cotholds still need rebuilding." Some of them had been
completely destroyed. "The watchtower is now safe enough to be
functional and we can use approximately half the docks." Which they
needed to get supplies in and ship out what they could to generate
marks for those supplies. "The shipyard remains unusable." Which hurt
Kaphrad's heart.
He knew it would likely be like that. After all, it had only been a few months.
All of that had taken more than that to build. Still, the setbacks bothered the
Hallmaster. From turns of experience dealing with the sea's capriciousness,
he had learned there was nothing he could do about it but just keep working.
"We've been working nonstop. The men deserve time to themselves for a sevenday
to rest. Then we can start going again in shifts. Once everything except the shipyard
is in shape, we can resume nearly all normal hall operations. Then we work on the
shipyard. This time, it will be reinforced to withstand winds and the higher tides."
The storm surge had been the major problem there.
"I should have planned better." Kaphrad was disappointed in himself
for making inadequate calculations on how powerful storms could get in
this area.
"Aye it's fine. Even if we had built it up, there would have still been damage.
Now, though, we can try to do better for next time. I was looking at a few things.
Some new designs favor a structure that is more metal than wood. I think it would
be hard to get our hands on so much metal though and harder yet to get
the smiths to fashion such a thing." Relik scratched his chin, pulling out a few
hides with numbers and drawings and letting Kaphrad see them.
"I would love to get more metal but we have enough expenses with the
rebuilding as it is."
"I agree, but if we can get things running again and build and sell more of your
new ships, maybe we can get the resources then. I'm saying do what we can now,
with that in mind for the future. So this needs to be adaptable to changes later."
Relik had gone over the numbers in his mind a few times.
Kaphrad nodded. "I can make adjustments," he said thoughtfully.
"Aye you're the engineer, not me. I trust you. Maybe run some numbers
and configure the design in mind of that and we can look it over again?
That way I can start trying to figure out what we need to do to get the
materials." Relik knew it would be some time before he could manage it
but the shipyard was their main source of producing income so it was
necessary to get it up and running again.
It was a good think Kaphrad liked numbers because he'd been doing a
lot of calculations lately. "With everything else going on, this might
take me a little longer than usual." He'd been so busy he often went
straight to bed when he got back to his rooms. "Would a sevenday or
two be all right?"
"Take the time you need. I understand." Relik would rather the job be done
right, than hasty and half finished. This was going to be for their future.
"I'll announce the restdays day after tomorrow. Some of them may want to go
check on family."
Kaphrad nodded. "I know everyone will appreciate some time off."
Though Kaphrad suspected he'd work through most of it anyway. The Hall had
suffered few casualties, but not everyone was so lucky.
