Genna

Genna

"I want to meet people you know," Firelloa said around a large piece of toast, swinging her legs under the dining cavern bench.

"You're lucky I'm fluent in 'mouth-full', or I'd be askin' if you felt all right," A'kua teased from the other side of the table, and his little sister made a face at him in return. "Are you sure you want to dive right in? You just got here two days ago."

Firelloa gulped the food and nodded rapidly. "I'm not tired and I'm not homesick, and Mother's safe at Opal Cove. You've met her, so I want to meet the family you chose; your special people," she clarified, since there was no chance or desire to meet Gordione or Eionen.

The weyrling rested his chin on his left fist for a moment, thinking. Firelloa had already met Ilyssia, and they adored each other right away. He was pretty sure his friends and Talwynn would be charmed by his little sister as well. The hard part would be finding the time to make introductions, but perhaps....

His eyes went glassy, and Firelloa waited while he spoke to Zeiranth, recognizing the look already. "Well?" she prompted when his stare refocused.

"Zei's askin' his dam, Lady Lissath, if her rider's free to join us," he explained, picking up his klah mug. "She should be here in a minute or two if so."

The little girl's wide eyes became even bigger. "I get to meet a real weyrwoman?" she squeaked.

A'kua nodded, and basked in the look of awe that overtook Firelloa's face.

Of course Genna had already heard of Firelloa's arrival and she had been burning with curiosity, but she had managed to contain it, giving the girl and A'kua time to adjust to the new situation. However, when Lissath relayed Zeiranth's question, she was up on her feet before the gold finished her sentence. Soon after, she approached the pair with a wide smile. "Well, hello there!"

"Mornin', Genna," A'kua said with a casual salute. "Have a seat. We just got started munchin'."

"Hi!" Firelloa beamed at the goldrider showing her own fanglike teeth and cementing her resemblance to her brother. "I'm Firelloa. A'kua says your gold hatched Zei, so can you thank her? He's the best bronze ever."

A grin spread on Genna's face at the girl's infectious enthusiasm. "Why don't you go tell her that yourself later? A'kua is one of her favourite people, so I'm sure she'll want to meet you too."

"Really?" Firelloa squeaked.

}:Mother, A'kua says your rider has won a friend for life,:{ Zeiranth reported.

The weyrling set his klah down, unable to hide a smile. "You may have to go alone, li'l sis, since I might be busy, but you'll have no problem with that, right?"

"Right!" Firelloa absolutely glowed at the idea. She had no interest in being a dragonrider herself, but meeting a gold up close and personal? That was worth being excited about.

"Perfect," Genna smiled, quite pleased that the girl was so enthusiastic. "How do you like it here so far, Firelloa?"

}: How has she done that so quickly? :{ Lissath said curiously, redirecting her attention from bronze-watching from her ledge to the conversation her rider was having. }Is it about the girl? Is she much like yours? Does she sing too? :{

"I love it," Firelloa gushed. "I can really craft here, and Mother's close by at Opal Cove, and I've always wanted a brother. Now I get to meet all his special people, and soon I'll be making friends with the other harper apprentices."

}:Your rider welcomed her, and offered to let her see you,:{ Zeiranth stated. }:And she's not very much like A'kua. They look a lot alike, and she does sing, but she's so bright and cheerful about so much. It's like she thinks everything is an adventure.:{

Genna couldn't suppress a cheerful chuckle. Was it possible for two siblings to be so opposed to each other when it came to general demeanor? Thinking of her own siblings, she had to concede that it happened more often. But it was still funny to compare the two. "Did you ever get to learn an instrument back home?" she asked curiously.

}: Everything is an adventure, don't you agree? :{ Lissath replied with humour in her voice. }: Some perhaps a little less exciting than others, but an adventure still. :{

Firelloa shook her head. "I just wanted to sing. I love to sing. It's one of my five favorite things. What are your favorite things, Genna?"

A'kua picked up his mug again to hide a smugger smile. While she knew Genna was a weyrwoman, apparently Firelloa had taken the 'treat her like any other person' route, which would probably please his friend no end.

"My favourite things..." Genna said, thinking for a while. "Well, Lissath obviously. You've probably seen how important a dragon is to his or her rider by now." She faltered a little after that, still thinking. "I really like running," she said finally. "Like exercise running. Gets you to clear your head. And spending time with friends, playing games or just chatting. I haven't had the time to find other hobbies, sadly. And the stuff I used to do back home at the hold never interested me much. I did them because I had to." She shrugged a little, looking back at the bright young lady at the table. "What are your other favourite things, besides singing? Do you want to be a candidate here?"

Firelloa shook her head. "No. I'm not interested," she said frankly. "I like dancing and talking walks, and telling stories. A'kua says he'll teach me how to rock climb one day. Sometimes I like sewing because Daddy taught me how. My real daddy, not our sire," she added. "But sometimes sewing gets really boring. Other times it's nice and relaxing, especially if I get to work on something pretty. A'kua told me I could learn how to make my own clothes between harper classes." She obviously relished that idea.

"Rock climbing, that sounds adventurous," Genna said with interest. "And if you like making your own clothes, maybe I can help you with that sometime. I don't get around too it much anymore, but I used to be pretty decent at work like that. It would be nice to spend some time to get to know you while helping out."

Firelloa's eyes bugged out, and A'kua thought she might explode from happiness at the idea. "I'd love to," she said breathlessly. "I have lots of free time, so when you have time too, you can call me. I'll be there."

"Sounds like a deal," Genna said. One commodity that was truly precious to her was time, so she was pleased the girl realised that too. "And how have you liked having your sister around, A'kua, is she keeping you on your toes?"

The weyrling smiled, the kind of expression that came across his face only when he was truly happy. "It's like she's always been part of my life," he said. "And no, she's too well-behaved for that. Her mother raised her right," he added, making the girl flush in pleasure.

"That is good to hear," Genna said, A'kua's obvious happiness rubbing off on her a bit. "I'm sure she'll find some mischief to fall into eventually, though," she added with a wink at the girl.

"Like boys?" Firelloa asked, catching on, and the bronze rider groaned.

"I'd rather not think about that yet, thanks," he complained, which only prompted laughter. "Now c'mon, eat up. We do have the rest of the day to get through, and Genna has her duties."

"Awww. I want to talk more," Firelloa sulked. "You're nice," she told Genna, "and it's nice to speak with you."

"It was very nice to speak with you too, Firelloa. And we'll do so more and often I hope. But your brother is right, I do have duties to attend to. I wish you both a very nice day!"

"Then I hope I can see you again soon." The girl leaned over and gave Genna a hug without even thinking about it.

A'kua felt his heart melt yet again. His sister's mother really had raised her right. Genna's rank gave her privilege, but it was also isolating at times. If she needed a hug, she should have one.
