N'vanik

N'vanik

Corvera spotted her man from across the dinning carverns. She had caught wind of the fight between N'vanik and U'kaiah, but they had been sent to the Weyrleader for punishment so she was still rather out of the loop.
But, she felt as the Weyrwoman she should have something to say on the issue. And so she decided to have a casual luncheon and bring the topic up.

The Weyrwoman quickly smoothed her dress, pulled her single long braid over her shoulder, and sat down across from N'vanik.

N'vanik looked up from his plate, a little surprised to see the new Weyrwoman. "You know, there are plenty of other places to sit."

"That's quite a saucy greeting to give a Weyrwoman, rider." She warned him playfully. He wasn't in a good mood and she doubted that her choice of topics would please him any more.

"I'm a saucy kind of guy," he said with a hint of amusement.

Corvera began to like him immediately. "So I hear." She gave him a rather formidable look. "I know you've already spoken with the Weyrleader, but we're going to have to have a discussion, too..."

N'vanik put his fork down. "I've had plenty of 'discussions' the past few days. So how about we just skip it?"

"I'm not going to lecture you, N'vanik. I just want to know what happened and how we can keep it from happening again." Her tone was very gentle and calming. She hoped it would draw him out of his shell a little.

"Tell U'kaiah not to pick a fight with me. That should solve the problem."

"I'm pretty sure that there was more to it than U'kaiah just decided to pick a fight with you..."

N'vanik sighed. How many times was he going to have to repeat this? "I had sex on his desk. Yeah, not smart, I know. I've heard enough about how stupid it was."

"Well the whole weyr knows _what_ you did, I'm trying to find out _why_.
Why?"

"Because it was fun. U'kaiah wasn't supposed to find out. It was for my own satisfaction," he leaned closer, "to know I'd done it behind his back."

The Weyrwoman nodded more to herself than anyone. N'vanik still wasn't answering the why he had done it - what made him want to do it. She was a little concerned that this incident wouldn't be the last of the conflicts between the two. "Well the next time, you'd better to a better job of hiding the evidence."

"After what it cost me, I don't think there'll be a next time," N'vanik said.

"I'm glad to hear that, N'vanik. I can't have important men like you and U'kaiah setting examples like this in my weyr." She became very serious.

"Setting examples!" N'vanik laughed darkly. "Oh, yes. All the little weyrlings look up to me."

"I'm sure you're aware of how much gossip there is around here, N'vanik." The Weyrwoman was obviously unamused with N'vanik. "And it all gets passed around wingriders and, yes, even trickles down to the weyrlings. Neither you nor U'kaiah have been such great examples for some time now, but if you're not willing to obey your Weyrleader in the future, I'll make sure there's enough punishment involved to motivate you." Her dark eyes flickered menacingly.

His jaw clenched. "You want to threaten me? Go ahead. I don't care." The bronzerider stood.

"Sit down, N'vanik. It's not proper to leave before you've been dismissed." She gestured to his chair. "And I'm not threatening you. I'm the Weyrwoman, it's a promise."

"I don't give crack dust about what's proper, Weyrwoman." Despite his anger, he kept his voice quiet. "So if you want to spank me for leaving, go ahead. Or maybe you'd enjoy that a little too much," he added, leering.

Corvera laughed, eerily calm and sounding almost friendly. "Oh please, N'vanik, I'm nothing like your little Traelyn. I'm not the type to be turned on by a man's darker side or upset myself on account of you." She shrugged a casual shoulder.

N'vanik slammed his fists on the table, barely restraining himself from jumping across it and slapping her. "Don't you _ever_ talk about her like that!"

Corvera rose from the table with her usual grace. **Now who feels like spanking?** "My apologies, I suppose I'm just a saucy kind of girl." She took a few steps away before turning back over her shoulder. "And N'vanik, if you ever get into a situtation like the one with U'kaiah or speak to me like this again, I can promise you, you'll regret it."

He didn't trust himself to say anything, only stared at her as she left. The other people in the dining hall were looking in his direction and whispering to their mates, but he paid them no attention. **Goldriders!**
he thought,
**they're all the same! Stuck up, domineering, selfish . . .** The littany was interrupted by the thought of Traelyn. She was always the exception, wasn't she? **Faranth, I miss her already.**
