Description: The River Bluff weyrlings take their first jumps /between/.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 7, day 4 of Turn 8
Notes: Mentioned: Anaeryth
This was a huge moment. It meant becoming senior weyrlings. It meant
getting ready for threadfall training soon. It meant getting one step
closer to being wingriders. It was a huge milestone for the weyrlings.
It was also easily one of the most dangerous. After what had happened
with Anaeryth, D'lorn would be the one leading this group through. It
had been a while since his last go round, where the young one had
ended up buried alive. He still remembered the horror of it, but he
had dealt with it and he knew it was time to prove he could do his
job.
The greenrider had them all line up for inspection. One-by-one he
looked them over, knowing they were nervous. For some it would be
easy. He hoped they would all come back. Villith stood ready, her
eyes whirling green, but with a tinge of yellow as she felt her
rider's worry.
C'rin stood beside of Dasveth feeling prepared, feeling ready. Maybe
it was having dragonrider parents, but he'd heard the word "visualize"
enough times growing up to understand just how important it was and it
was something he and Dasveth did frequently, just for the fun of it.
A'kades was there for the lesson because he found that he couldn't
not be there. His plan was to oversee – and respond to any misplaced
jumps to bring people back. He hoped for no impromptu weyrling
rescues like last time.
L'dran had his hands holding Harrath's straps. He was nervous, but
trying not to share it. Images of the Seacraft Hall that was his
home-former home-kept crossing his mind.
Velaith was excited and impatient, wanting go _now_ and preferably as
the first one. F'dal was feeling more nervous and far more serious.
This was it. One of the most important steps on his training. He
didn't want to mess it up, but he had no idea if he was good at this
or not. It was something totally new to him, outside his field of
experience. He had only gone /between/ once, when arriving to the
Weyr. IF he did succeed, he would soon be free to travel every corner
of Pern. That thought cheered him up.
"All of you have been working very hard on your images. We've asked
you to practice them, giving them to your dragon, and having your
dragon send them back to you. Today is the day you will be tested.
Your first jump will be through with me. You will take the image from
Villith and give it back to me before we go. If everyone does well,
then we will complete second jumps using your images." The greenrider
looked at all of them, aware of the nerves and the looks being
shared. "Today is a huge day. We want everyone to arrive back here
safely. If at any point you are unsure, not ready, or you feel
uncomfortable-do not hesitate. It's better to wait till you are than
to end up somewhere you shouldn't be." He didn't elaborate on that,
hoping his look was enough to tell them how serious he was.
"C'rin-mount up! You're first, lad." He had chosen a brownrider on
purpose, but this boy in particular. He was solid and had rider blood.
Hopefully things would go better this time than they had for another
brownrider he thought of. Taking his time, D'lorn mounted himself and
watched to see that C'rin checked his buckles and straps. Giving
Villith the image of Jade Harbour Hold, he knew it was an actual place
many of these weyrlings had been to and it wasn't far. The image was
an easy one to hold, and Villith shared it with Dasveth.
}: But I wanted to go first! :{ Velaith wailed.
**Shut up. Your turn will come,** F'dal said to him and thumped the
bronze's flank.
C'rin did just as they'd been taught during class. He settled onto
Dasveth's neckridge, made sure all of his straps were buckled and in
place, and then he reviewed the image of Jade Harbour Hold with
Dasveth to make sure that they were both visualizing the exact same
details. **Pass the visual back to Villith.** he instructed his brown,
and then waited for the go-ahead.
The green examined the image as she sent it to her rider. D'lorn was
extra careful and it was some time before he stopped being quiet.
"Allright, we'll go toward the Star Stones and then head /between/
when I give the word." Villith launched herself into the air, gaining
altitude slowly and then hovering so the young brown could catch up.
}: When will it be our turn? :{ Velaith grumbled impatiently. His
rider wasn't much more patient so they were both fidgeting now.
Dasveth zoomed after Villith with exuberance, ready and eager to prove
himself to his Weyrling trainers. C'rin had to hide a little smile at
the brown's eagerness, and reign him in a little. **Easy, you don't
want D'lorn and Villith to think we're careless.**
}:Dasveth, put the image into your mind and focus. We go with you:{
Villith instructed. Then the green began making wingbeats, moving.
D'lorn yelled, waiting for the brownpair to catch up. "Allright, we go
on one, two, three!" And then there was blackness. After a few
moments there was sunlight again. D'lorn twisted in his straps to look
for C'rin.
C'rin had expected D'lorn to use the hand signals they had learned in
class, as it was hard to hear his voice over the sound of the wind
whipping around his ears. He was able to make out the man's lips
though, and on the count of three, Dasveth used the image that they
had passed to Villith to pull them /between/ and out above Jade
Harbour Hold.
**Good job! Just like we visualized.** He thumped Dasveth's neck.
}:Of course it is.:{ Dasveth said pridefully.
}: Is it our turn now? :{ Velaith asked impatiently.
Letting out the breath he had been holding without thinking about it,
D'lorn took a deep few breaths and let his pulse lower.
}:Great job! Now have your rider visualize the Star Stones Dasveth and
send it back to us:{ They would use C'rin's own image to get back.
This was one they had practiced many times with all of the weyrlings.
Should something happen, they had to be able to get back home.
}:Why can't I go now?:{
Frankly, F'dal was surprised that Velaith's constant whining hadn't
driven anybody crazy yet. Or even told him to shut up.
C'rin pictured the familiar image of the Star Stones, sharing the
crisp visual with Dasveth who passed the coordinates along to Villith
for verification. Once they were all set and permission granted, C'rin
and Dasveth /betweened/ back to the Weyr.
Waiting just a brief moment after he saw the brown pair disappear,
D'lorn let Villith know to go on. The green followed them through and
then appeared near the Star Stones. There was no keening which was a
good sign. Spotting C'rin safe and sound, D'lorn inwardly cheered.
}:Well done, Dasveth! You can both land now. Velaith, here is your
image. Have your rider focus on it and then send back to us:{
}: Is it now our turn? :{ Velaith asked.
**Yes!** F'dal replied and then concentrated to compose the visualization.
He sent it to Velaith who had it cleared and approved. Just before
they /betweened/, F'dal remembered how Jade Harbour looked when
approached from the sea. He always enjoyed being at the crow's nest
when they arrived at the port. Of course Velaith picked that image and
they came out...over the port and too low at the height of a ship's
mast and there was a ship ready to dock!
}:Whoops!:{ Velaith exclaimed and rolled sideways to avoid a collision
with the ship's mast. Then, just because he enjoyed it, he let a wild
whoop and made a barrel roll.
**This is not fun!** F'dal yelled at him, his heart had leapt into his
throat and now pounded so fast he felt it would break out of his
chest. **I nearly wet my pants!** he said and guided Velaith to
ascend to a more safe altitude.
}: Oh, come on, it was fun, :{ Velaith argued.
D'lorn and Villith had come through with the bronze pair but they had
erupted into the sky on the other side of the Hold. For a moment, the
greenrider looked about, his stomach falling as he felt a slight panic
begin to creep up. He was unable to see them.
Villith automatically began reaching out. }:Velaith-where are you?
Report now!:{ The green's mindvoice didn't have the command of a
gold's but it was certain that she meant business. She resent the
image straight to the young bronze.
}: We are here! :{ Velaith replied, flying over the Hold to join the
green. }: We got a bit astray, :{ he wasn't a least bit apologetic.
}: Did you see the expression on those seacrafters' faces? :{ he asked
privately from his rider, still elated by his trick.
**Yes, _they_ wet their pants. You should stop frightening people, **
F'dal scolded.
}:You got a bit astray how? The image you sent me should have brought
you here:{ Villith questioned after a brief conversation with her
rider, who was again slowing his breathing after seeing the young
bronze.
}: He was thinking of ships so we went to see the ships, :{ Velaith
replied innocently, mercifully leaving out the part about nearly
getting impaled by a mast and scaring the crap out of seacrafters.
D'lorn would deal with that later. For now, he had to get this pair
back to the Weyr. The greenrider straightened in his harness.
}:There were no ships in the image I passed to you.:{ Villith's tone
was disapproving and Velaith's innocent tone was not helping matters.
Still if he had used the wrong image, it was his rider's fault so
F'dal would have to face that once they got back and the lesson was
over. }:This time, give me the image for the Star Stones:{
Velaith relayed the image and the return to River Bluff Weyr went
without further mishaps.
}:Your rider will see mine after lesson:{ Villith informed Velaith
before turning to the next weyrling in line.
