Genna laughed and gave her friend a quick hug. "You go and conquer
some hearts," she encouraged him. She was grateful the bluerider had
offered himself as an escort and didn't mind in the least he wanted to
use the occasion to have some fun among new people. "I'll find you
when I'm ready to go, you shouldn't be hard to spot with all the
handsome greenriders flocking about you."
That just got a laugh and a wink in response and then L'tran was off
on the hunt. Genna wondered if K'ran had arrived yet. She might not
get to see him for a while, she could imagine he needed to stick to
Rhosyn for a considerable amount of time. That didn't sting as much as
it had before, now she knew for a fact it wasn't out of attraction to
her, but out of respect and a sense of duty. And the past sevendays
had proven he really was attracted and committed to her. Somehow, they
would make this work.
Well, until he had time for her, she'd go have fun, catch up with
acquintances and meet some new people.
K'ran had always loved going to hatchings, even if they weren't at his
own Weyr, because they were festive events. Now that he'd been through
all the formalities involved in a Hatching that Rogueth had won, he
was realizing the nice thing about attending another Weyr's Hatching
event was the fact that you could just _enjoy_ it and not have to
perform for it.
Well, he was still a Weyrleader, so there were a few duties he had to
perform. But once he'd congratulated the pair, there was no need to
meet all the other dignitaries from local Holds, so he had a chance to
mingle. And mingle he did. It had been over a Turn since he'd lived at
Dolphin Cove, so there was certainly some catching up with former
friends and wingmates to be done.
He had just finished trading some gossip with D'rei when he caught
sight of a familiar figure in the crowds. "I will have to stop back
and check it out, maybe the next restday," he said to his former
wingmate. Then he headed across the way to meet up with Genna.
"Hello there," he said to her.
Genna turned around at the sound of a familiar voice and her smile
spread a little wider on her face. "Hello there, to you too." How
different this was to the last Hatching celebration they had met at.
She made a little curtsy, with a twinkle in her eyes. "Weyrleader
K'ran."
"Goldrider Genna," he said formally, offering her his hand. "How are
you doing today?"
"I am doing quite well, what about yourself?" she asked with a
mischievous grin as she took his hand. Then she dropped the whole
formal act and gave him a quick kiss. "Did you enjoy the hatching? I
think it was quite lovely."
He couldn't help but smile at this treatment. "It is. I love every
hatching I watch. And I'm happy for Kapera this one was successful."
"If it wasn't for those winds it would have been perfect. But even so,
it was a wonderful hatching," Genna smiled. Like every rider, she
loved a good hatching, as a celebration of her own memory of finding
Lissath. "And at least this time neither of us have much in the way of
duties!"
"That's something I appreciate. These feel a little more fun as a
guest," he said. "Would you like to dine with me?"
"Indeed they do, though I wouldn't trade a guest attendance for
Lissath's own hatching if my life depended on it," Genna said.
Lissath's first clutching and hatching had been an experience
paralleled only by their impression. "And I would love to. Have you
had a chance to see what's on the menu?"
"Some kind of savory pulled meat. I don't know this Headwoman or what
she makes," he mused.
"Well, the Hatchings I visited here so far were extremely
well-catered, so whatever it is, it is sure to taste good." Genna
remarked joyously.
"What was it like for you to see Rogueth's offspring hatch? Do you
still keep tabs on them?" She made an effort herself to check up on
Lissath's weyrlings every now and then, but she knew it would only get
harder and harder as time progressed.
Perhaps it was a shame that with everything going on between them, she
had never really celebrated his and Rogueth accomplishment. It had
felt way too awkward at the time. But now she could make up a bit by
showing more interest now.
"I have been watching the weyrling classes when I can. I don't want to
be hovering, but I do want to know how they are. As for watching them
Hatch, it was so amazing. Like how I imagine having my own children
would be."
Genna was struck by his comment on children, thrown off balance by
what must have been a casual remark. "Looking forward to being a dad
some day, then?" she asked, trying to sound just as casual.
"It hasn't happened yet and I don't know if it will," he said. "I
don't mind either way, but I do like them. I've always heard it's this
most powerful moment of "by the Egg, we made those" and a sense of
love - and that's how I feel about Rogueth having his own dragonets,
too."
Genna was obviously relieved at his answer. She was nowhere ready for
children, if she ever would be. "Yes, it's what I felt at Lissath's
hatching too. I wonder if it's still as wondrous if she's been
clutching for a few Turns." Meanwhile they had made their way to the
end of the line and Genna piled her plate with food.
K'ran took some of the pulled wherry onto his plate and added several
slices of bread to soak up the sauce, forgoing the rivergrass side
dish.
"That's a good question for another goldrider. Bronzeriders like me
might only get one clutch, so we see them as precious. You're going to
have so many clutches that I'm sure you can't keep track of all the
pairs. But at the same time, they'll all be traced back to you and
Lissath and be a part of you. That's special when you stop to think
about it, right?" he asked.
"Well, I'll answer the question in a few Turns myself," Genna laughed.
"And it is special. I wonder if she'll ever clutch a gold egg. That
would be amazing." She had finished loading up her plate and waited
for K'ran to lead the way through the crowd.
"It would be. Her very own daughter. I'm sure she will some day," he
reassured. His eyes scanned the room and he saw a table in a corner
that was free, so he started heading that way. Once there, he set down
his own tray and pulled out a chair for Genna to sit.
