"Why, thank you," Genna said, obviously pleased by the chivalrous
gesture. She sat down and waited for him to find his own seat before
digging in. "This really does look delicious," she said in
expectation.

"Going to steal some recipe tips for your next Hatching?" he joked.

Genna placed a finger against her lip as in conspiracy. "Shh, don't
let them on."

As they began their meal, she looked at the tables around them and
observed the various different people. Hatching feasts were great for
people-watching. She wondered suddenly if perhaps Lord Corowal was
around. If he was she should go say hello. He had paid her such a
friendly visit after all. "Did you get to meet much dignitaries yet?
In your new function as Weyrleader I mean?"

"A few. The Lords of the major Holds of the region - Sunstone,
Turquoise Bay, Garnet Valley, Jade Harbour. Some of the minors as
well, if they can send delegates. I recall having an overview of some
of them before but now it's much more important to memorize and know.
I had to drill myself about them before I went to meet any. Felt like
I was back in Weyrlinghood," he joked.

"At least I went through all that while /in/ Weyrlinghood," Genna
laughed. "Though I guess it's nothing compared to what a Weyrleader
must know, or his Weyrwoman." And that she could be one day. It was an
idea that hadn't often crossed her mind and she usually dismissed it
at once. But it could happen, one day in the faraway future, and
watching K'ran attain Weyrleadership made that slight possibility just
a tad more believable.

"You probably had to do more of it in Weyrlinghood than I did. Back in
those days, there was a lot less regimen about it. And anyway, there's
more bronzeriders than goldriders. Even before you're Weyrwoman or
Second, you'll still have to meet and greet them at your own
Hatching," he said.

"I bet you can name all the important ones in the Dragonsfall
territory because they're yours, but if you transferred you'd have to
start again. I think I've had four - no, five sets in my head now."

"Wow, you really have transferred often, haven't you?" Genna said with
wonder. She herself had moved only once - when she'd been searched.
"Don't you get tired of it? Adjusting to a new place every time? I
know you love to travel and visit new places, but making yourself at
home every time..."

"Oh, but that's my favorite part," K'ran said.

"I know some riders see transferring as a punishment duty, or they
leave when something sad happens and they can't get over seeing
memories in the walls. But I transferred because I had an itch for new
skies, new horizons, new people... I just usually had a bit more
_planning_ and time to get used to it," he added with a laugh.

"Do you think you'll ever settle in one place for good?" Genna asked
seriously. If he remained Riverbluff's Weyrleader he had no choice,
but it wasn't likely he'd be Weryleader forever. Unlike herself, she'd
always be a goldrider and not free to transfer around as she pleased.

"If the incentive was right. I know it would eventually look bad to be
a constant traveler. But I like the freedom to move around, fill in,"
he said.

"I thought about setting at Dragonsfall. It was comfortable there. If
I lose the next flight, I would go back... If allowed," he qualified.

"I'd put in a good word for you," Genna said with a chuckle. "Ah well.
I'm trying to change my perspective a little. Worry less about the
future and enjoy what's happening now more." It seemed a more
enjoyable look on life. If only she could get the hang of it. "Like
this wonderful dinner with a wonderful man." She gave him an
appreciative look before continuing. "What are you doing tonight?" A
wiggle of her eyebrows suggested she had an idea if he didn't.

"I was thinking about stripping off all my clothes and /betweening/ to
the highest peak of the Western Barrier Range," he quipped.

"That sounds cold," Genna said, looking all serious. "I could offer
you some place warmer."

K'ran pretended he had no idea what she meant, struggling to keep his
face straight as he said, "Sending me to the heart of a volcano?"

"That's warm, true enough," Genna nodded. "But what do you think about
my bed-furs instead?

K'ran's attempt at being stoic failed and he broke into a smile. "If
the lady is offering, I would love to."

He hadn't been sure if they'd ever get to a place again where she
would feel comfortable to make this kind of offer. The fact that she
was...

"The lady is most certainly offering," Genna said, reaching out for
his leg with her own foot from under the table and caressing it
gently. "I guess we'll both have to mingle some more after dinner, but
why don't we meet up again at the end of the dance, have a swing
around the place and then head back for Dragonsfall? You can be away
for one night without it causing you trouble, can you?"

"I believe I can be away for a night," he said. "I have to make sure
my Weyrwoman makes it back safe, but then I can either meet you there
if you prefer, or come back here to take you home."

"I'll see you there. I've got U'bmin to take me home," she replied
with a hint of laughter in her voice. "He jumped to the opportunity to
accompany me to the Hatching. I wonder how many conquests he's made so
far."

"Probably at least two and a broken heart," K'ran joked. "I'll have
Rogueth let Lissath know when we're there."

"Perfect," Genna said with a seductive little smile, briefly brushing
his leg under the table with her foot. "You go find Rhosyn, I'm sure
it'd be good for you two to be seen together." It wasn't so hard to
stomach now she knew he'd be returning to her after. "I'll go hunt
down some acquaintances."

"See you later," he said, leaning forward to kiss her cheek before
collecting his tray to dispose of.

"See ya,"Genna replied, shivering in anticipation as his lips touched her
forehead. When he moved away, she gathered her own tray. It'd take a lot
of self-restraint to make it through the evening when the night still
seemed so long, but the reward would definitely be worth it.
