Description: A casual conversation between the men.
Location: Amber Hills Hold
Date: month 9, day 6 of Turn 8
Notes: Mentioned: Chupsin, Genna, Chaysea
"Well? How have things been?" Benamil greeted Yusanis with a smile and
a shake of the hand. He'd been gone for a month, and even though he'd
been back for a couple of days, he still felt paranoid and anxious
about actually _seeing_ Arion again. So far he'd been lucky to avoid
the vintner. **Or maybe he's avoiding me.**
Yusanis grinned over at Benamil when he saw the other man. "The
weather's acceptable and the bandits have been more quiet, so the
Hold's doing well. How have you been?"
"Ah, bandits," Benamil's mouth twisted a little, "I had nearly
forgotten about them. Getting out of the snow and cold in favor of
Dolphin Cove's warmer climate made me hesitant to come back." Of
course, it had been something much deeper than the weather that had
made him hesitate to return home. "Have you ever been to Dolphin
Cove?" He asked.
"I can't blame you for wanting to stay there," Yusanis said, thinking
of how nice the weather sounded. "I'm afraid I haven't had the
pleasure of visiting that Weyr."
"If you get the chance, go." Benamil told him. "I am fortunate to know
the Headwoman at Dolphin Cove. She grew up here and was the Headwoman
at the Vintner Hall before taking the Weyr position." It had of course
caused talk at the Hold that a holdbred woman would leave to live at
the Weyr, but Benamil envied the freedom that Chaysea had found at the
Weyr.
"That's quite a change in scope," Yusanis observed. "A busy Weyr must
be much larger than one of the Halls. I'm impressed of her for you."
"Her brother is a healer here, Chupsin." Benamil didn't think the two
were on speaking terms since she left the Hold.
"I've seen him around but I don't know him well," Yusanis admitted.
Benamil grinned a little, "He's probably the most blunt individual
you'll ever meet, but he's also one of the best healers you'll ever
meet so it balances out. His niece, Genna, was Searched here and went
on to Impress a gold dragon at Dragonsfall."
"There's lots of good to go with the bad then, and being blunt isn't
the worst thing a man can be," Yusanis said. "Are you two good
friends?"
"I don't know if you'd say we're incredibly close, but we've known
each other our whole lives, both being raised here at Amber Hills."
Benamil's thoughts flashed to Arion, someone who had been his closest
friend until....
"I wish I had a friend like that here. The downside of moving is
losing that," Yusanis said. "Were you ever fostered out to change
things up?"
"I didn't, some of my siblings did. I took up beastcrafting and stayed
here to pursue it. What about you? Spend much time at other Holds?" he
asked.
"I fostered at Sapphire Meadows, my father thought it would do me good
to learn about other Holds. Not that I was expected to inherit."
"I sometimes wish I had fostered instead of staying here, but for
whatever reason my father always kept a watchful eye on me, as if
afraid that I may not turn out as he wanted." Benamil's tone was
somewhat bitter, especially as he contemplated how his father would
have felt knowing he had professed feelings for a man.
"You never even got to go to the main Crafthall?" Not everyone did,
but surely men of the Blood like themselves should have had the best
chance at the best training.
Benamil shook his head, "Father wouldn't allow it. I think he believed
I was too much of a daydreamer, so he kept me close to keep an eye on
me."
"It's a pity. I think it gives you a great chance to meet people. You
would have gone to..." He stopped for a moment to recall where the
Beastcraft was. "Opal Cove, not Sapphire Meadows. I suppose we
wouldn't have met earlier, then."
Perhaps if things didn't turn around for him soon at Amber Hills,
Benamil might consider spending some time at the crafthall.
"True enough." Benamil pushed upright, "Well, I've got work to do in
the stables, it was good talking to you."
"It was good to speak with you as well. If you'd like to catch up some
time, feel free to let me know. We could have a drink or something."
"I'd like that." Benamil said truthfully, before tipping his head to the
Steward and departing.
