N'vanik

N'vanik

Trouble, Sh'del's tiny green flit, chirped at her person and nudged
him awake. Sh'del opened his eyes, already annoyed at himself for even
falling asleep. Who slept in the middle of the day anyways? Aunties
and Uncles, that's who. One bloody broken leg and this is what he
was reduced to? Sh'del grumbled to himself before reaching up and

cradling Trouble's head in his hand.

It was then that he noticed the knock on his door. Ah, so that's what
she was waking him for.

"Yes? Come in," he shouted. Not that he could actually go to the door,
after all.

N'vanik pushed open the door and poked his head inside. "Hey there. I
came to check on you."

"One broken leg and suddenly I have a hundred and one aunties
surrounding me," Sh'del grumbled. He waved his hand to tell N'vanik to
come to the chair by his bed.

N'vanik took a seat. "Would you rather have me ignore you?"

"It might be safer...but no." Despite his annoyance at being
bedridden, Sh'del couldn't hide the joy at seeing his old friend. "So
what's been going on since I decided to fall over that green
weyrling?"

"Well, the River Bluff transfers are settling in." The sudden addition
of a full Wing plus support staff had put a strain their resources,
but they were managing well.

"River's Buff..." Sh'del sighed heavily. "At least Rhosyn didn't have
to go through this. Your daughter's here now?" Tiny green Trouble took
flight from her perch above Sh'del's head and landed on N'vanik's
shoulder, rubbing her head along his chin.

"Yeah. Y'gel brought the whole family over. I'm so happy to have her
close." N'vanik absently patted the firelizard.

"Is her foster mother okay as well, or is she going to be fostered
with a different woman here?"

"She's staying with Briata. Briata made it out just fine. I actually
grabbed her and the kids off the side of the cliff." N'vanik didn't
like thinking of what could've happened if he hadn't gotten there.

"Bloody shards, mate." Sh'del sat up and reached out to grip N'vanik's
shoulder. "How are they?" His eyes darkened with concern.

"They're fine, they're fine. The water chased them up some stairs on
the side of the Weyr, but I got them out. They even missed the
earthquake and the collapse."

Sh'del gave him a low whistle. "That was luck. Did Briata contact Loseth?"

"I went as soon as I heard a tsunami was hitting River Bluff. Once we
got there Briata and her gold firelizard helped us spot them on the
cliff."

Sh'del reached over for the bottle of wine on the table close to him.
"Here, you need this more than me," he said as he poured his childhood
friend a drink and handed it to him. "You're the luckiest bastard I
think I've ever known." He grinned to take any sting out of his words.
"Hopefully I can get back on my feet soon and be of help to you once
again. Maybe if you're lucky I'll offer to babysit so Briata and her
fella can have a night off!"

N'vanik thanked him before taking a sip. "Ha! You watch weyrlings all
day and now you want to watch my kid too?"

"Yeah, go on! I'm bored off my head right now and it'll let me pay you
back for having my back so many times." Sh'del chuckled. After a
sevenday of bed rest, babysitting sounded like a lot of fun. "And
Trouble here can help." The tiny flit crooned her approval.

N'vanik eyed Sh'del's injuried leg. "No watching kids until you can at
least hobble after them. Nisha can run now."

"I've got Trouble and Loranth, it'll be no problem!"

Out in his weyr Loranth grumbled his opinion of that.
