Jayzine

Jayzine

Jayzine stepped down onto the pavement in front of the Hold and turned
to thank the dragon and rider who'd brought her and her children.

"Thank you very much for the ride," she smiled up as she helped Miyon down.

"Not a problem, ma'am," M'shan replied and unstrapped their bags. "Did
you enjoy the ride?" he asked from the children.

Myon jumped up and down as small boys do "It was so great!!" He
clenched his fists so har his arms shook as he said it.

Jayzine chuckled at the little guy. He did have his moments. But when
she looked at her daughter she just shook her head. The sullen girl
followed her but was obviously unhappy about coming to Emerald Falls.

"Well," she said, "We all enjoyed the ride. My duty to your dragon,"
she added.

"Thank you, Ma'am and Juth says you're welcome," M'shan replied and
mounted his brown again.

She smiled and turned toward the main hold. "Well," she said to her
children. "Here we go." She walked through the door and looked around
for a minute or two before a drudge noticed her.

"May I help you ma'am?" He took her her knots and bags. "Are you expected?"

"Yes," she said with narrowed eyes. "Why is no one watching the front
of the building? A dragon landed and no one informed the Steward or
the Lord?"

"Well I..." the man stammered. "I.. I had to go and..."

"Your Lord expects any guests or dragonriders to be welcomed at the
door. If you have to leave your post for any reason you make sure
someone else is taking care if it first. Now, take me to Lord
Corowal."

Corowal was quite annoyed when found out there was no one to greet the
incoming visitors. Sarban's absence was making itself know.

"I apologize for the bad reception," he said when she was escorted to
his office.

"No need," she bowed her head and dropped a small curtsey. She
squeezed Myon's hand and he bowed from the waist as she'd taught him.
She didn't look at Jeilta but heard her skirts rustle and took that as
an indicator that she'd also made her curtsey to the Lord. "We are
very happy to be here my Lord."

"I'm pleased we are able to provide you a sanctuary after the ordeal
you've been thru," Corowal replied: There probably wasn't a single
person in Pern who hadn't heard about the disaster struck on River
Bluff by now.

"Thank you sir," she half smiled. "I hope I can help you here in Emerald Falls."

"Well, speaking of help," Corowal flashed his most charming smile.
"You were the Headwoman of River Bluff Weyr, weren't you? I just
happen to desperately need a headwoman. The Turn's End is approaching
and I'm understaffed."

She nodded with a half smile. "I can handle that," she said. "But I do
have a concern."

"Yes? What it is?" Corowal asked.

"Well," she started with a deep breath. "I have heard of problems at
Emerald Falls for people from the Weyr. I'd thought perhaps just
telling them I was from the Vintner Hall might not be a bad idea." She
gave him a small smile. "I was formerly married to a Hallmaster there
many Turns ago."

"Yes, there's some people stirring trouble between the Hold and the
Weyr," Corowal replied. "So, your suggestion is both reasonable and
sensible. There's no need to invite trouble nor advertise that you
come from Weyr."

"Thank you," she nodded. "I'm sure they'll still find out eventually.
These things don't stay hidden for long. But hopefully by then I'll
have proved myself and they won't have any issues with me, My Lord. I
assure you I can handle the job."

"I am sure that if you can handle a Weyr, you can handle a one little
Hold," Corowal replied with confidence to her abilities. While Emerald
Falls Hold wasn't _little_ in any scale, it did have less people
living directly at the main Hold than Weyr had. The Halls and minor
Holds and Cotholds all had their own headwomen.

"Yes sir," she nodded quite sure she could. Truthfully she'd worked so
hard over the last few weeks she'd been looking forward to a less
hectic schedule. "Your Turns End is one of the highlights of the
season our riders always spoke of. Is there anyone I should work with
to get up to speed on where we are with preparations?"

Corowal gave her the names of senior staff members who had been
handling the preparations, like the head cook.

"Very well, sir," she said and curtsied once more. She knew she had to
hit the ground running and it was a big job but she knew what she was
doing and would whip the staff into shape in short order. Her first
business would be to settle in and then summon her department heads.
Her own head was already spinning with the tasks in front of her but
she smiled warmly. "Thank you for this opportunity."
