Description: Riveenata goes to the required mindhealer's appointment.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 2, day 2 of Turn 9
There was always an apprentice on shift whose job was to note down why
people were coming to the Infirmary, know where the currently on staff
Healers were and what they were doing, and generally to help make sure
that people got sent to the right place. Today, it was Itakil on shift.
He grinned when he saw Riveenata come in, the boy having had a crush on
her since she started doing duty shifts.
"Heya, Riven. What's going on?" he asked cheerily.
"I have to make some appointments," the greenrider said.
Her tone was really sad, Itakil noticed. He wondered why. There'd been
some bad injuries today during Threadfall. Maybe she knew someone who
was hurt.
"What kind of appointment and when?" he asked, There was a book made for
scheduling appointments, and he opened it, ready to look up.
"A mindhealer appointment and a physical, and as soon as possible."
"Both?" he asked, looking up at her in surprise. Riven didn't _look _
sick. "We're kind of busy today," he added after looking at the book.
"Yes. Weyrwoman's orders to be seen quickly," she added, hoping it would
stave off the boy's questions.
"Oh," he said. He tapped his chin. The appointment book was full today,
and it was hard to pull in walk-ins on Threadfall days because of all of
the injuries the Healers had to deal with, but Master Kehyan's schedule
did have some space…
"Hold on, I'm going to go ask someone," he said, darting off.
Riveenata sat down in a chair to wait. She occupied herself by
unbraiding and then re-braiding some of her hair. She'd gotten through
two full braids and was working on a third when the apprentice reappeared.
"Master Kehyan has some time to see you right now," he said. "C'mon,
exam room four doors down."
"He'll be in in a few," the apprentice said before leaving her alone.
She took a seat on the exam table and began stripping down to her
undergarments to save time.
"Riveenata, what brings you in?" Kehyan asked when he entered a few
minutes later, closing the door behind him. "Ah, thank you for making it
easier for me," he added when he saw she'd prepared.
"No problem," she said. "I'm here because the Weyrwoman's Second sent me
in for a physical."
"Why the sudden need for a physical now? I thought all the River Bluff
riders were run through one as part of their integration."
She felt a warmth in her cheeks when she told him why she was here.
"I've been grounded from the Queen's Wing because of making a mistake
earlier. As part of my punishment, I'm supposed to see a mindhealer and
get a physical, in case something's wrong."
"Well, let's go ahead and get the physical out of the way, and then we
can talk about mindhealing," Kehyan said, glad that the apprentice had
asked him to make some space for the appointment.
As Riveenata expected, the results of the physical were that she was in
fine condition. Talking with Kehyan about what happened to have the
goldrider send her here to the appointment was more painful. She had
been beating herself up for the mistake since it happened. Talking about
it to Kapera had been hard enough. Telling an unrelated party… By the
end of it her face was wet with tears.
"It might have been good for you to stop in earlier," he gently chided.
"You mean, before I screwed up and nearly killed a weyrling?" the
greenrider asked bitterly.
"So you didn't have to stay in pain for a long time," he countered
gently. "We'll get you that mindhealer appointment scheduled so you can
talk things through, and we'll get you ready to return to flight."
"Will you tell Kapera that I can do any duties? Besides wing ones?" she
asked, since it sounded like he was going to agree with the goldrider
that she couldn't fly.
"I see no reason why you couldn't do watch duties."
"And Healer ones?" she asked.
He hesitated long enough that her mood crumpled as she realized he was
going to say no. "We'll want you for Threadfall duty. And there are some
other duties we could assign you to. We'll tell you," he said.
That was the best she could hope for, she supposed. Something that
wasn't stewing. "Thank you for meeting with me, Master Kehyan."
"Not a problem. I'll report to the Weyrwoman's Second for you, don't
worry," he said, watching the greenrider go.
