Sufficently Awkward

Writers: Eimi, Shelly
Date Posted: 10th March 2006

Characters: Corvera, U'kaiah
Description: Corvera give U'kaiah a luncheon lecture.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 10, day 17 of Turn 3

U'kaiah pushed the piece of wherry meat around in the fruity sauce with indifference. Every once in a while he would look up and catch one of his former riders and curious weyrfolk looking at him. Some would glance away quickly as if they had never looked his way. Others would give in small, pitying smiles. There were only a couple smiles that were genuine. **Kalamath, remind me to start taking meals in my...**
Wait, he didn't have an office anymore. **Take out.**

Corvera saw the gloomy look on the bronzeriders face and decided that a conversation with her couldn't make anything worse, so she sucked in a deep breath and sat down. "Hello, U'kaiah."

"Good afternoon, Weyrwoman," he said, mustering a welcoming smile.
"Good to see you're eating as you should." Some Weyrwomen he knew forgot to take care of themselves sometimes Corvera gave him a rather quizzically amused sort of smile. He was pleased to see that she was eating well? U'kaiah certainly was an intriguing man. "I must confess, U'kaiah" She changed the subject, finding herself unable to think of a way to respond to that. "That I have a reason for sitting with you today..."

"Oh?" he asked as he looked down at the piece of wherry that was now saturated and stained with berry sauce.

"I thought that perhaps we should touch base on the whole incident with N'vanik. This is nothing formal, I just want to hear your side of the story and see if anything can be done to ensure that it doesn't happen again."

"I found out he had sex on my desk with one of my wingriders and I cracked. I doubt it will happen again." The bronzerider popped the piece of wherry in his mouth, trying to maintain an air of unconcern.

"You doubt he'll have sex on your desk again or you doubt you'll lose it again?" Corvera was rather amused.

"Well, considering I have no office with a desk at the moment, I suppose that would eliminate my concern of his having sex on it. Although, if he decides to break into my weyr to have sex on _that_ desk... Wait... I don't have that weyr anymore either. Nope. I guess I can't lose it again for a while." He gave her a small smile to let her know he meant it all in good humor. Perhaps if me made light of the situation it wouldn't hurt as much.

"Every time I talk to you it's as if I'm meeting you again for the first time, U'kaiah. And I'm not sure if that's refreshing or concerning, but if nothing else you're not yelling at me like N'vanik did so I suppose I have no complaints..."

The bronzerider frowned. "That man _yelled_ at you, Weyrlady?"

Corvera waved a dismissive hand. "I knew what I was doing when I upset him. He was trying to get the best of me and I had to prove that he couldn't. I was right."

U'kaiah smiled a little, having a new found respect for the young Weyrwoman, but he still seethed inside that N'vanik would have the _gall_ to yell at a Weyrwoman. Shards, if N'vanik were his rider...
But he wasn't his rider anymore, he had to remind himself. Retribution was not his to give. "Well, it was still incredible rude of him. I'm sorry. He's always been that way."

"Well it's chivalrous of you to take my side of things. But don't think that this will make me forget that _you_ were the one that attacked hi -
regardless of the circumstances."

The bronzerider's eyes hardened a bit. "Yes, I doubt anyone will be forgetting that any time soon." It reminded him that he was no longer friend material for anyone of a high rank. Or a low rank. Any rank for that matter. Corvera put a gentle hand on his across the table. "I doubt half the men in this weyr would have taken it so well. But you'd do well not to forget all the same." The Weyrwoman was a little surprised at her own behavior - it was a slightly less than was appropriate, but then again her conversation with N'vanik had hardly been appropriate, either.

He glanced down at her hand and forced a small smile. "I will keep that in mind, Weyrwoman."

"Well, then, "Corvera continued, removing the, apparently, unwelcome hand, "I suppose this has been sufficently awkward for the both of us, and you seem to be rather bent on the idea of eating alone, so perhaps I should leave you to it..."

"You're more than welcome to join me, Weyrwoman, if you like," the bronzerider said with a bit more natural smile. He doubted he would take him up on the offer anyway. After all, all he was good for now was his reputation which was obviously unforgetable.

Covera was tempted to accept, but thought the better of it. "I'd like to, but I there's a rather uncrupulous pile of hides on my desk right now... Perhaps another time?"

"Yes, perhaps," U'kaiah replied, at least trying to hide his skeptisism.

With a final nod, Corvera moved away from the table and headed, quite honestly, for her office and a stack of hides for company.
