"Hello the weyr," a voice called, echoing through Xmrenth's weyrcouch to reach K'lvin inside of his weyr. It wasn't a voice that he recognized immediately, but it had shocked him at first, because it had sounded eerily like Bahji. Just the thought of his deceased weyrmate sent a wash of sadness over him. He tried not to think about her, it was the only way he could deal with the pain.
"Come in," he called back, glancing around at his bachelor pad. It was pretty sparse but he was no slob.
Chaysea's keys jingled against her hip as she walked into the bronzerider's weyr. She didn't know him very well at all since he was from River Bluff, but she knew about his condition because it had been up to her to pick a weyr for him that would be suitable.
"I don't mean to bother you," she said as she stepped into the bronzerider's weyr.
**Ah, the Headwoman.** He'd not spoken to her personally, but he'd seen her in the Dining Caverns.
"It's no bother, I've..." and here he paused and then lifted the corner of his mouth in a rueful grin, "got nothing going on."
Chaysea gave the man a sympathetic smile. He wasn't at all what she had imagined. The word 'retired' conjured up the picture of some old, wizened rider that could barely get on his dragon's grey neck. There was nothing old or frail looking about this man. He was tall and broad of shoulder, and she was sure there was a trim physique hidden underneath that tunic...
**Why am I thinking about his physique?** She scolded herself, hoping there wasn't any pink on her cheeks.
"I just came by to-"
~~Mine! Mine!~~ Company burst into the weyr, screeching with excitement as he careened down at Chaysea and wrapped himself happily around her neck.
K'lvin's eyebrows lifted at the firelizard's sudden arrival.
"Heh," Chaysea reached up to settle Company, "I apologize. We're still working on etiquette."
The bronzerider stared at Company, but instead of seeing the brown firelizard, the only vision in his mind was of Burst, Bahji's flit, and how he had looked there in the end, sitting dutifully by Bahji's limp hand....
K'lvin's throat became dry, and constricted as if someone had a hand around his throat. **Pull yourself together. You can't cry in front of the Headwoman.** He reached up and pinched the bridge of his nose and shook his head to clear his mind.
"It's fine," he said, although his voice wasn't as reassuring as he wanted. "I am the one who should be apologizing, I'm just... Not myself."
Chaysea was sure that Company's presence had made the man upset, but she couldn't fathom why. "I just came by to see if there was anything you needed, supplies for yourself, or your weyr." She glanced around, noting how bare it was. "Is there anything that you might need for your daughters here?" She knew about his children from her list of foster mothers and their wards.
His daughters... K'lvin had been steadily avoiding them, not because he didn't love his daughters, but because he didn't want them to see him like he was.... And then there was Kaliha, her hair was growing in the same shade as Bahji's had been and it broke him to look at her.
Chaysea watched as the man pinched the bridge of his nose again. "Look, I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable, if this is too much... You can come and see me when you need something."
K'lvin shook his head, "I'm not trying to make this difficult on you. I know these seem like easy questions but.... I guess I still haven't convinced myself that this is my home and that I should make it feel that way."
Company peered at the man curiously.
"It's okay, everyone takes things at their own pace." She took a step back toward the weyrcouch. "Like I said, whenever you find that you need something, I'll help you get it. It was nice to finally meet you face-to-face."
K'lvin inclined his head to the woman, and sighed as he watched her turn and leave. Had he gotten so bad that he couldn't even carry out small talk any more? Must everything remind him of what he had lost?
**Just another thing that Master Kehyan will love to pick apart.** He thought of the mindhealer that he saw on regular appointments ever since his heart attack.
Walking out to Xmrenth's ledge, K'lvin leaned against his bronze lifemate and looked around at Dolphin Cove Weyr. The wind blew his shoulder length hair gently around his face as he closed his eyes and took deep breaths. This wasn't his home, his home had died with River Bluff.
