Description: R'kehr and Saidrene talk about family as they jog
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 2, day 7 of Turn 9
"So did you have family at River Bluff?" Saidrene asked, her long
black hair bouncing in it's tail as she jogged beside of R'kehr.
"My mother and two sisters. I have a brother too, but he's still at
Vista Point," R'kehr said.
Saidrene shielded her eyes as they rounded the loop and jogged
straight toward the rising sun. "And did your mother and sisters come
to Dolphin Cove?"
"They did. My mom's in Cyclone now. My younger sister hasn't decided
if she wants to Stand or not. She's only 12 so I suggested she wait,"
he said. "Otherwise she'll just be stuck in the weyrling wing
forever."
"Or stuck with Candidate chores for Turns." Saidrene hadn't decided to
be a Candidate until she was nearly seventeen for just that reason.
"Did your family expect you to Impress bronze?"
"I don't think my mom cared at all," he said honestly. "She cares
about her green and that's about it. My foster mother said I was
always at the center of trouble and that would destine me for either
blue or bronze. I hoped for bronze, of course."
Saidrene filed away the information about his mother, if she was in
Cyclone that meant she and R'kehr was wingmates. "Is it awkward being
in the same Wing as your mom?"
"I feel like it should be more awkward than it is. But really, we just
don't think about each other that much. Thadath won't chase her green,
but he doesn't seem to have any extra drive to protect her than he
does when covering any other dragon in the wing. Does that make
sense?" he asked the greenrider. "Like, yes she's my mom, but I was
raised by my foster mom more than her. So I know we're connected but
we're more like distantly friendly acquaintances."
"That's understandable.... Honestly, sometimes I wish I'd been raised
more closely by a foster mother than my real one, but being a
goldrider, spending a lot of time on the ground when her gold is egg
heavy, or before Thread started falling again, I got to spend a lot of
time with her growing up. It's hard to get out of your mother's shadow
when she's a goldrider." Saidrene found it a little easier now that
her mother was at Dragonsfall.
"I can imagine that. If you'd Impressed gold too, it might have been
even worse since then everyone would be treating you as a mini-her,
right?" he wondered.
"My mother's shadow isn't nearly as long because she's just a
greenrider. She said she's not sure who my father is, so I don't have
any shadow from my dad. He could be a caverns worker, or a
bronzerider, or a Lord Holder for all I know."
Saidrene considered that, "Well, if you don't know who he is you might
as well make him someone grand. Let's see, he's definitely a Lord
Holder, rich beyond imagination, with wives and mistresses at his beck
and call."
This was a game he could definitely get behind. "That sounds like an
amazing life to me. My mother clearly fell for him because he could
provide her with clothes and jewels, and would have left me there but
his wives probably didn't want another bastard running around the
Hold, so I had to stay at the Weyr instead."
"You were probably the cutest babe of them all and they were afraid to
keep you around lest you deter the women from their own heirs when you
grew up." Saidrene added and then shot a glance at her running
companion. "That one was probably true."
He laughed. "I appreciate the compliment," he said graciously. "Though
becoming the bastard heir of a large Hold sounds nice to me...
especially if I then got my own wives and mistresses."
}:But then you could not have me,:{ Thadath interjected.
"And my dragon doesn't get the joke. Pity."
"To be fair, you could have a harem of women right here at the Weyr,
and not have to worry about the whole wives and mistresses bit.
Although, I've met some pretty jealous, and stingy dragonriders when
it comes to relationships." The fluidity of relationships was one of
the advantages of living at the Weyr.
"What makes you think I'm not working on it?" he teased. "There's so
many new women here to meet and try my charms on - and some to get
terribly rejected by," he added with a mock pout.
"I can't imagine why they get jealous. Have fun, embrace someone when
you have them, move on to someone else. That's the joy of life here,"
he said.
"I agree. That's why you should come over later tonight," she grinned.
"I would happily add myself to your collection of men, if you have
one," R'kehr said. He tried to make a flourishing bow, but stumbled
slightly over a rock in the path.
Saidrene laughed and reached out to grab his arm out of habit to deter
a fall, "I wouldn't say I have a collection, but you could be the
start of one."
"Thanks," he said as she helped him recover. "I'll make sure to
provide incentive to keep me in it, then."
